Memoirs of a Life. Chiefly Passed in Pennsylvania, Within the Last Sixty Years; With Occasional Remarks Upon the General Occurrences, Character and Spirit of That Eventful Period. Harrisburgh: Printed by John Wyeth. 1811. First Edition. Written by Capt. Alexander Graydon. The following military biography is accredited to Frederick Cookinham of the American Revolution Round Table and gives a flavor as to the author's life: Ft. Washington was to be Graydon's first and last battle. He was captured and paroled and returned to the army at Morristown. But refused to rejoin in protest over the shabby treatment accorded himself and others captured at Ft. Washington, especially Col. Rawlings, who applied but was passed over for a commission in favor of younger officers pushed to the fore by their states. This protesting nature is all over ... moreGraydon's book. He offers many political criticisms of his times. Such as the merciless treatment of Burr by President Jefferson, and gives a scathing analysis of the design of Ft. Washington and of the very idea of defending the place with so few troops. Don't blame the cowardice of the troops for the loss of the fort, he says, though Gen. Greene did just that. Lack of numbers alone explains the defeat. If this judgment reflects badly on the decisions of the Commander in Chief, he says, I cannot help it. A good man he undoubtedly was, but my respect for Washington must bow to my respect for the truth, and the truth is ``his record of military decisions is not without blemish. He also blames Col. Magaw. the fort's commandant, for bad judgment in defending northern Manhattan. Anther very 18th Century story is how Graydon got paroled by Gen. Howe: his mother came from Philadelphia. In his preface to Standard English Poems Spencer to Tennyson. Editor Henry S. Pancoast wrote: Not only is poetry one of the noblest and most uplifting of the arts; it is peculiarly fitted. From one aspect at least, to be the art most universally enjoyed. I have tried to make a collection of English verse, which should serve as an introduction to such a serious and systematic study of one of the richest and noblest poetic literatures the world has produced. This lovely old volume is in excellent condition for its age. The front is embossed with rampant lions. And the title on the spine is in gold. The cloth cover shows some wear and light staining, and the back cover has been bent at the upper corner, and in the center(see photos) There is no moisture damage, and most pages are clean, although several have underlining or pencil notations. ... moreThe binding is intact, but loose in the middle, causing those pages to protrude slightly farther out along the edge than the others(see photo) The former owner's name and location are written in beautiful, vintage script on one of the cover pages, and pages xv, 1/2 and 3/4 are missing about 1/4 to 1/2 in from the bottom of the page, although no text is missing(see photos) The book was deemed culturally important enough to be reproduced in facsimile. And these versions are selling in paperback for more than $50.00, but this book is the original. It would be a fine addition to any collection of poetry or antique books.

So here is a layman's description of the book's condition: All text pages and illustration pages/plates are in good shape. If a tad yellowed with age, but not brittle. End-pages are somewhat brittle, one end-page(in front) is detached. Inside cover joints are cracked; inside ... morejoint at endpapers in back is taped(neatly) Covers- boards and spine- are significantly aged, with some loss of material. See photos. The spine area is certainly in need of the prompt attention of a conservator in order to stabilize it from further damage/deterioration. HAVING SAID ALL THAT. The interior of the book is in stunningly well-preserved condition. The pages are not abused or dog-eared. In fact. The book may not actually have been read. There is just a bit of foxing here and there. The only marking I can see is the number"195.00" IN PENCIL inside the front cover- possibly the sale price when this book changed hands sometime during its life.
