TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish Dictionary of Roman Religion ... moreby Lesley Adkins and Roy A. Adkins. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 288 pages. Publisher: Facts On File. Inc; 1996) ISBN: 0816030057. List Price $44.00] Long overshadowed by Greek mythology. Or treated peripherally in general texts on the ancient Roman world, Roman religion is finally accorded its due in this unique reference work. While perhaps most familiar in the context of Greek-influenced gods(Jupiter is to Rome what Zeus was to Greece" Roman religious life in fact encompassed a tremendous variety of deities, rites, and belief systems. From the Celtic God Abandinus to the pagan historian Zosimus, Dictionary of Roman Religion" contains more than 1,400 entries. Among the myriad of topics covered are: deities and spirits; festivals; sacrifices; temples, altars, and cult objects; burial rites; writers on religion; and historical religious events. Different religions within the Roman world. Such as Mithraism, Druidism, Judaism, and Christianity, are also discussed. Entries range from brief definitions to concise essays reflecting particularly important aspects of religious practice, and most include suggestions for further reading in addition to a complete bibliography. A glossary, 63 photographs and 65 line drawings, and extensive cross-references round out this singular perspective on religious life in the Roman world. Written by two experts in the field. Dictionary of Roman Religion" answers questions, makes connections, and sets Roman religion in its full context as no other source does. An essential reference for students, researchers, and teachers, as well as those interested in ancient religions, myths and legends, Roman society, and classical studies, this dictionary is a welcome and novel addition to the vast library on ancient Roman life. In 1955. My father-in-law built a custom home in the Covina, California Ranchos and hired an interior decorator to select all of the furnishings for the ... morenew house. This coffee table was one of those furnishings. It was the centerpiece of the living room. Surrounded by a sectional sofa and easy chair, and over-looking the kidney-shaped pool in the backyard. The coffee table was purchased at J.H. Biggars. A then-exclusive furniture store in Pasadena, California(Biggars is still in business, located at 860 E. Colorado Blvd. Pasadena, CA) The coffee table has been in the family ever since. I have stored this table for a number of years. I'd hoped that it would someday be a focal point in my Malibu beach house. But the beach house never materialized(ha! so alas, we are finally dispersing possessions that we have no room for. Here is a description of the table: The travertine marble top sits atop a wood. Triangle-shaped base. I’m not sure what kind of wood this is. It is finished a pale blond color. The base is very sturdy. The white travertine marble top is a triangle shape with rounded corners. It is more than an inch thick and very heavy. The marble has grooves and holes in it. Which is a natural part of the stone. The surface of the table is flat and shiny. As you can see in the photos. There are a few water spots and one water ring on the marble top. These are superficial and they can possibly be buffed or polished out. There is some wear on the base and brass feet. As you can see from the photos. There are no maker marks on the table base or top. Other than the number"500" stamped on both, which identified the pieces as a set. The marble top measures 60-inches long by 41.5-inches wide. This is a low. Coffee table. This table is available for local pick-up ONLY in Glendora. California(San Gabriel Valley, Los Angeles area) Please DO NOT BID on this item unless you are prepared to travel to Glendora to pick it up. This is a great deal on a mid-century piece of furniture. If you buy it. Come prepared to

"Patterns in Prehistory Mankind's First 3 Million Years" Sumer Egypt Indus Peru
Patterns in Prehistory: Mankind’s First Three Million Years by Robert J. Wenke. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover: 724 pages. Publisher: Oxford University Press; 1980) In the past century archaeologists have excavated thousands of sites. From medieval English market towns to Australopithecine camps on the African veldt. By carefully examining the remains of these ancient societies, they have managed to reconstruct to an extraordinary degree what happened many centuries, even millennia ago, detailing everything from our ancestor’s physical characteristics and diet to their technology and social arrangements. Patterns in Prehistory” tells the story of these discoveries– both what we know and how we know it. With more than 200 illustrations and many quotations from primary sources, Robert Wenke sirveys mankind’s first three million years. Much of the book ... morefocuses on origins: the origins of culture, agriculture, and complex society. Wenke proceeds from the first culture-bearing animals on the African savannas millions of years ago to the development of stratified societies and the rise of the first states and empires in such areas as Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Indus Valley, China, Mexico, Peru, and MesoAmerica. The book includes a comprehensive chapter on the first Americans. Drastic changes in theory and method. As well as the dramatic discovery of new ancestors of Homo Sapiens, transformed archaeology in the twentieth century. This survey takes into account many of these upheavals. Archaeologists are searching for general principles that will integrate their findings and provide a key to understanding the past. Through the book Wenke strives to relate the evidence to the many different theories that have been propounded to explain the“great transformations” of the past: the origins of anatomically modern humans, the invasion of the temperate latitudes, the domestication of plants and animals, the development of sedentary communities, and agricultural economies, the origins of war, class and cultural complexity, and the cyc

NEW North American Indian Myths & Legends Navajo Algonquin Iroquois Sioux Pawnee
Myths and Legends Series: North American Indians by Lewis Spence. With Illustrations from Drawings and Famous Paintings. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 392 pages. Publisher: Studio Editions; 1993) In countless tepees. Across the wide expanse of the North American continent, the Indian storytellers filled the hours of darkness with tales of myth and magic that held their audiences spellbound. Before the arrival of the Europeans, more than three hundred tribal groups lived in the forests, mountains, and plains of North America. For these Indians, the stories were more than mere entertainment, they were an essential part of a culture based upon a common understanding of mankind’s place in nature. As such the mythology was inseparable from the ceremonies and beliefs of the tribes. In many. Such as the Navajo, the mythology was inextricably ... morebound with tribal ceremony and beliefs. Dancers who donned masks to represent gods thereby assumed the spiritual strengths associated with them. The stories that were told varied according to tribe, but they were united by many common themes. Trusting yet superstitious, the American Indian lived close to nature, at one with his surroundings. The mountains. Forests, and plains are the settings for these charming stories, which center on hunting, trapping, and other pastoral pursuits. In all of them, the elements play an important part, just as they did in the lives of the Indians themselves. The open air, the wind, the sun, the trees, the stones and the hills were all believed to be living things; even the night and the day. Presiding over all was the Great Spirit, the supreme Indian deity. Many stories tell of a time when the earth was different than it is today. Before the coming of the tribes, when animals were considered to be human too. Totemism, the belief that animals had inhabited the land before man and were this better equipped by nature and cunning to survive than primitive mankind, is the prevalent characteristic of the Indian mythologies. The Indians had com

In fact, the foundational concepts can be traced at least as far back as the sixteenth century, when contact with unfamiliar peoples in the New World led Europeans to create ways of describing and understanding social similarities and differences among humans. Early Anthropology in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries examines the history of some of the ideas adopted to help understand the origin of culture. The diversity of traits, ... morethe significance of similarities, the sequence of high civilizations, the course of cultural change, and the theory of social evolution. The Gods of the Egyptians: Studies in Egyptian Mythology(volume 2) With 229 Illustrations, Including 6 in Full Color by E.A. Wallis Budge. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 431 pages. Publisher: Dover Publications. Inc; 1969) Thoth. The ibis-headed god of wisdom, inventor of the art of writing. Osiris, the dead god who arose and set the pattern for death and resurrection gods ever since. Isis, the great mother goddess, wandering through the reed swamps. Anubis, jackal-headed conductor of the dead. Bast, the cat goddess. Set, the evil serpent. Ptah, the living mummy. For more than 2,500 years, since the days of Herodotus, students have found the gods of ancient Egypt a source of fascination and wonder. Strange beings who lived in a world of their own(as opposed to the human gods of the European peoples) irrational powers and menaces. Sometimes animal-like, ... moresometimes superhuman, sometimes incalculable in their evil potentialities. They still have the power to move men’s thoughts. By far the most thorough. Most useful coverage of the gods of Ancient Egypt is the present book by Dr. Budge of the British Museum, one of the foremost Egyptologists of the modern era. In it is presented practically everything known about the high gods, the local gods, demigods, demons, and mythological figures of Khem. Dr. Budge provides full information on the origins of the ancient religion and its peculiarly Egyptian aspects. On the evolution of cults, rites, and gods; the priesthoods; the heretical aberration of Akhenaten and the Aten cult. As well the cult of Osiris; the Book of the Dead and its rites; the scared animals and birds; heaven and hell, and much other secret wisdom that has been discovered hidden in mummy cases or written on tomb walls. The text is profusely illustrated with many reproductions of tomb and mummy-case paintings. While many full texts are presented with both hieroglyphs and translation. Dr. Budge’s book is a standard work in the history of religion. It is also a most useful background book for anyone seriously
Great Pyramid Quest Secrets Dawn of Civilization 7000BC Sphinx Alternate History
Pyramid Quest: Secrets of the Great Pyramid and The Dawn of Civilization by Robert M. Schoch. Ph. D. and Robert Aquinas McNally. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 368 pages. Publisher: Jeremy P. Tarcher/Putnam; 2005) The Egyptologist acclaimed for re-dating the Great Sphinx at Giza sets his sights on one of the true mysteries of antiquity: the Great Pyramid of Giza. What is the Great Pyramid of Giza? Ask that basic question of a traditional Egyptologist. And you get the basic, traditional answer: a fancy tombstone for a self-important pharaoh of the Old Kingdom. This, Egyptologists argue, is the sole finding based on the data, and the only deduction supported by science. By implication. Anyone who dissents from this point of view is unscientific and woolly-minded, a believer in magic and ghosts. Indeed, some of the unconventional ideas ... moreabout the Great Pyramid do have a spectacularly fabulous ring to them. Yet from beneath the obvious terms of this controversy, a deeper, more significant question arises: how is it that the Great Pyramid exercises such a gripping hold on the human psyche- adding cryptic grace to the back of the one-dollar bill and framing myriad claims of New Age"pyramid power" In“Pyramid Quest” Robert M. Schoch and Robert Aquinas McNally use the rigorous intellectual analysis of scientific inquiry to investigate what we know about the Great Pyramid, and develop a stunning hypothesis: This ancient monument is the strongest proof yet that civilization began thousands of years earlier than is generally thought, extending far back into a little-known time. In tracing that story, we come to understand not only the Great Pyramid but also our own origins as civilized beings. CONDITION: CONDITION: NEW. HUGE Ancient Egypt Gods Pharaoh Daily Life Farmer Laborer Soldier Family Leisure
Egypt: People. Gods, Pharaohs by Rose-Marie& Rainer Hagen. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 240 pages. Publisher: Taschen; 2003) This is a huge. Very heavy and high quality art book filled with descriptions of life in ancient Egypt and with absolutely superb full color plates. It is a presentation quality publication. The world’s first strike took place in 1152 B.C. We do not know how many workers laid down their tools, but we do know why they did so. They had not been paid their rations of grain and oil, and so the tomb workers in the Valley of the Kings went on strike. In modern times, the ancient history of Egypt has only been about its rulers and monumental architecture. You will certainly find the Pyramid of Cheops and the Temples of Ramesses and Hatshepsut in this book. But what you will also find is an account of a long-neglected ... moreside of Egyptian history: the people’s everyday lives. How did they picture the world? What sort of relationship did men and women have to each other? How did they spend their leisure time? And why did they develop such a perfect technique of preserving the body after death in the form of a mummy; as light as a blown egg and as hard as a statue” The authors investigate stimulating questions and dare to take a fresh look at an ancient past that seems much more real to us from this new perspective. Rose-Marie Hagen was born in Switzerland and studied history as well as the Romance languages and literature. After longer study periods in France and Florence. She began lecturing at different institutions including the American University in Washington, D.C. Rainer Hagen was born in 1928 in Hamburg, and graduated in literature and theatre studies in Munich. Life in Ancient Egypt by Adolf Erman. Translated by H.M. Tirard, with a New Introduction by Jon Manchip White. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 570 pages. Publisher: Dover Publications. Inc; 1971) What was it like to live in the ancient land watered by the Nile. Thousands of years before Christ was born? How did a man earn a living? What did her wear? Where did he go in his leisure time? What was the relationship between an ordinary Egyptian and his government, his wife, his children? Was life for him grim or gray? Difficult or easy? Reverent or worldly? Did his people travel, explore, conquer? Were they very much different from those of the other great civilizations of antiquity, the Greek and the Roman? What was the nature of their science, art, magic, religion? If the past has lessons for the present, what can we deduce from ancient Egyptian life ... morethat is of value to us today? For generations scholars. Specialists, and general readers have been turning to a monumental sourcebook for the answers to such questions: Life in Ancient Egypt” by Adlof Erman. It is one of the most influential and frequently consulted works ever written, a classic in its field and the basis of numerous other studies and works. It is still one of the very few books that offer the modern reader so satisfying, informative, and complete a survey in one volume. Erman. A rigorously trained scholar, Director of the Egyptian Museum in Berlin and author of standard works on Egyptology, covers his subject thoroughly and with a wealth of interesting concrete detail. He examines ancient Egypt’s political structure, crime and police systems, domestic life and kinships, dress, amusements, religion, learning, mathematics, magic and folk beliefs, literature, art, agriculture, trades, arts and crafts, commerce, warfare, and much else. His objective point of view. Eschewing romanticism on the one hand and frigid pedantry on the other, gives us a treatment that is as trustworthy in fact as it is evocative in effect. Beyond Death: The Chinchorro Mummies of Ancient Chile by Bernardo T. Arriaza. Foreword by John W. Verano. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with Dust Jacket: 176 pages. Publisher: Smithsonian Institution Press; 1995) Thousands of years before ancient Egyptians mummified their dead elite. The South American Chinchorros performed elaborate mummification rituals for deceased members of every level and age of their society. The Chinchorros are exceptional for the sheer number of known mummies, nearly two hundred, and the variety and complexity of their mummification techniques. Although first discovered in 1917, the Chinchorro mummies are little known throughout the world and most literature about them is in Spanish. In"Beyond Death" Bernardo Arriaza brings to light these unprecedented remains, offers new interpretations of Chinchorro mortuary ... morepractices, and reconstructs this culture's daily life of 8,000 years ago. While this early South American society left no written record describing their customs and concept of death. The mummified remains provide clues to their culture. The Chinchorros lived as fishermen on the Pacific Coast of Northern Chile and Southern Peru for millennia. While they did not have ceramics, woven cloth, or metal tools, the early Chinchorros developed a complex process of skinning, eviscerating, and reconstructing a body so that it has remained preserved for 8,000 years. Arriaza details three distinctive styles of mummification in addition to bandaged mummies: the earliest"black mummies" coated with manganese paste; the"red mummies" coasted with red ocher; and the mud-coasted mummies of the latest period. Arriaza describes the clothing. Simple ornaments, and everyday tools that accompanied the bodies, and he speculates that people who concentrated so much energy in caring for their dead must have had a strong belief in the afterlife. Drawing on evidence from archaeology, biology, and Andean cosmology, Arriaza discusses the Chinchorro notion of death, their supernatural b

Egyptian Religion: The Beliefs of Ancient Egypt Explored and Explained by Lucia Gahlin. DESCRIPTION: Softover: 128 pages. Publisher: Southwater; 2002) The many gods and goddesses of ancient Egypt. And the sacred sites and temples that are dedicated to them, have fired our imaginations for centuries. Religious belief was central to life in ancient Egypt, and played a fundamental role in the development of their great society. The ancient Egyptians believed that their religious beliefs and practices would accompany them from life into death and the afterlife. In the first half of this book, the state religion is considered, with an examination of the preparation for the afterlife, including the procedures and ceremonies that followed death such as mummification and the Weighing of the Heart. Once these ceremonies were performed, the deceased’s ... moreburial site depended largely on their status and wealth. An in-depth look at mastabas, pyramids, and rock-cut tombs is vital to our understanding of the state religion of ancient Egypt. While the religion of the state concerned itself with the interaction between the gods and the pharaoh. Popular religion permeated every aspect of people’s lives. The second half of the book examines the effects of popular religion on daily activities. Magic, superstition, and ritual were by no means considered unorthodox or an alternative to the religion of the state. Often a priest who performed rituals in the state temples would also be called upon to carry out what we would call magic or sorcery. The religion of this fascinating society has been documented with maps and a wealth of beautiful photographs, reproductions and color artworks, making“Egyptian Religion” an essential reference for anyone interested in this ancient civilization. American Dawn: a New Model of American Prehistory by Louis A. Brennan. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover: 390 pages. Publisher: The Macmillan Company; 1970) Who was the first American man and where did he come from? How long ago did he arrive…and how did he live? At last we are able to piece together the“American Dawn” in all its engrossing complexity– a story that completely contradicts the beliefs so widely held by archaeologists as little as ten years ago. Louis A. Brennan has accomplished a complete survey of American prehistory based on radical new evidence obtained in the last decade. And the result is as surprising as it is compelling, witty, and factual. Comparing yesterday’s archaeological theses with today’s model of American prehistory, the author constructs a remarkable picture of the first American man and the first American community. ... moreHow did he look, act, exist? What tools did he use, what food did he eat, what clothes did he wear? How did he communicate? How, in fact, did American civilization develop? Now for the first time these questions can be answered. Thanks to recent spectacular advances in dating techniques(carbon 14 and other methods explained in the text) we are able to picture America’s earliest settlers in their natural habitat and lifestyle. Brennan traces the first Americans back to the very beginnings of man. In Olduvai Gorge, East Africa, giving cohesive and wide-ranging commentary on the revolutionary discoveries of eminent archaeologists(such as Leakey and Dart in Africa) and the new world-picture that has evolved over the past decade. But the reader, too, is an explorer, learning how much can be revealed from a clam shell in Croton, New York; from an arrowhead in New Mexico; or from a tree in California. He discovers too the question of environmental determinism, the role played by climate and surroundings in the regional development of American man. And he returns to his beginnings, identity, and primitive traditions with a reawakened knowledge of this new world, his home. CONDITI

The Golden Pharaoh by Philipp Vandenberg. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 328 pages. Publisher: Macmillian Publishing Co. 1980) For three thousand years Tutankhamun had been lost to time. Buried beneath the shifting sands of the Egyptian desert. Then on November 26, 1922, after an exhaustive search in the Valley of the Kings, his tomb was found and its fabulous treasures were at last brought to light. Vividly recounting the suspense and intrigue that led to the discovery, The Golden Pharaoh” unravels the final mysteries that shroud the most sensational find in the history of archaeology. If finding the tomb was a triumph, finding it intact went beyond the wildest hopes of Egyptologists and stirred the imagination of the entire world. Behind the glamour and glory of the monumental feat lie the stories of the two men who made it possible. ... moreThe first man was Howard Carter. The obsessed excavator who endured hardship and ridicule but refused to give up, despite loneliness, disappointment, and bitter enmity toward the patron he hated but upon whom he depended. And secondly, Lord Carnarvon, the aristocratic adventurer who devoted his vast fortune to a seemingly hopeless quest only to die, under mysterious circumstances, at the moment his dream was fulfilled. Drawing upon scholarly research as well as eye-witness reports. Philipp Vandenberg reveals the corruption, rivalries, scandals, and explosive conflicts ignited by the discovery. His account is a gripping drama of diplomats and thieves, dedicated archaeologists and reckless fortune hunters, impassioned Egyptian nationalists and self-serving British overlords. Detailing the history of the tomb and its construction, Vandenberg recreates the fascinating world of ancient Egypt. From the revolutionary rule of Akhenaten and Nefertiti, the splendid pageantry, the desperate power struggles, the palace and temple intrigues, the customs, beliefs, and bizarre sexual practices. Their dialogue covers many questions, such as; is knowledge purely subjective, composed of the ever-changing flow of impressions we receive from the outside world? Is it better thought of as true belief' Or is it, as many modern philosophers argue, justified true belief, in which the belief is supported by argument or evidence? Chaucer and the Late Medieval World by Lillian M. Bisson. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 294 pages. Publisher: St. Martin’s Press; 1998) Divided between the outer world of affairs and the inner world of poetic insight. Chaucer sought to make sense of his changing, conflicting world. In“Chaucer and the Late Medieval World” Lillian M. Bisson examines the societal issues that the poet explored in his work. Bisson provides lively interpretations of Chaucer's texts, especially“The Canterbury Tales” in the context of the paradigmatic shifts taking place around him, and offers a broad historical overview. Often going back to the Early Christian period, Bisson helps the reader grasp the significance of those shifts. She focuses on three major areas of medieval life; religion, class/commerce, and gender; all of which were experiencing considerable change ... morein the fourteenth century. The book builds a bridge between an unmediated encounter with Chaucer’s texts and the more specialized discussions found in most contemporary criticism. And provides a detailed analysis of Christian culture. Surveying a thousand years of pyramid building, he charts the rise and decline of the pyramids as funerary monuments. From the mastabas of the first and second dynasties and the step pyramids. To the archaistic and backward looking efforts of the Middle Kingdom. He also discusses in detail the famous group at Giza. His ... morefinal chapter, dealing with their construction and purpose, puts the pyramids into the perspective of ancient Egyptian society. For this revised edition he provides a radical new explanation of the evolution of the Great Pyramid. Illustrated with sixty-six black-and-white photographs as well as numerous diagrams and plans, The Pyramids of Egypt” remains a classic work of Egyptology. CONDITION: NEW. GIANT Lost Civilizations Indus Tigris Euphrates Phoenicia Atlantis Egypt Persia
Lost Civilizations by Bill Harris. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 112 pages. Publisher: BDD Illustrated Books; 1993) Since the dawn of time humankind has been fascinated with the endless mystery of life. The birth of civilization. Including the construction of the first buildings, the manufacture of early artifacts, and the many and carried applications of an evolving technological knowledge, happened in large part because of this fascination. In trying to explain their surroundings and attempting to rationalize the fantastic, human beings created a wealth of monuments that give the modern archaeologist clues as to what life has been like over the millennia. Lost Civilizations" probes the archaeological and anthropological evidence uncovered by researchers and paints a compelling portrait of the growth of civilization. The books ... morestarts with a discussion of the very real evidence that points to the existence of a vanished land called"Atlantis" The book then travels to the Near East. Where, as many researchers believe, humankind's first civilization developed, in the Tigris-Euphrates Valley in Mesopotamia. Also included in this chapter are descriptions of the communities in the outlaying regions, particularly ancient Egypt. Next the book focuses on the Mediterranean civilizations. From the Phoenicians; who have been thought responsible for ruins found as far away from their home as North America; to the Trojans and the Greeks. From there"Lost Civilizations" turns to the Far East in an examination of Asian civilizations, including those of China, which has survived as a unified state for more than 2,000 years. Also examined are the Indus River Valley civilizations(the site of modern-day India) as well as Persia, whose well-trained armies conquered an enormous empire. Africa is the next land of mystery to be explored; the civilizations of Zimbabwe and Ethiopia. Among others, are held up to the light of modern scrutiny, deepening suspicions that the continent might have seen not o
NEW Alexander the Great Biography Dodge 692pg Macedonia
Alexander: A History of the Origin and Growth of the Art of War from the Earliest Times to the Battle of Ipsus. 301 BC, with a Detailed Account of the Campaigns of the Great Macedonian by Theodore Ayrault Dodge. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 692 pages. Publisher: Da Capo Press; 1996) ISBN: 0306806908. Alexander the Great(356-323 B.C. was incontestably one of the greatest military generals of all time and one of the most powerful personalities of antiquity. From the time he sacked Thebes and crossed the Hellespont to his death eleven years later. He conquered the entire Persian empire, including Tyre, Egypt, and Babylon, and moved on to present-day northern India and Afghanistan. He influenced the spread of Hellenism throughout the Near East and Asia, establishing many cities such as Alexandria that flourished long after his death. This classic ... morestudy of Alexander, his predecessors, and his influence on the art of war remains fascinating and relevant over a hundred years after its initial publication. The classical works dealing with warfare in and before Alexander's time gave little more than bare facts of military matters; Dodge's contribution was to vividly reconstruct every major battle of Alexander's brilliant military career. Provide much needed background material concerning the art of war before and during Alexander's reign, and fully illustrate his narrative with invaluable maps and charts. The result is a masterpiece of military history, and the book that inspired General J. F. C. Fuller to write his own classic study of Alexander, and one which will similarly inspire generations of future readers. CONDITION: Slight edge-wear to cover consistent with bookstore's open shelf stock. Otherwise clean and unread, in like-new condition. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. NEW Medieval Marriage Family Roman Byzantine Sex Plague Retirement Noble Peasant
Marriage and the Family in the Middle Ages by Frances and Joseph Gies. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 372 pages. Publisher: Harper& Row Publishers; 1998) Historians have only recently awakened to the importance of the family. The basic social unit throughout human history. Long left to the anthropologists and sociologists, the family and marriage, its indispensable accessory, have stirred intense controversy since being taken up by early modern historians. Phillipe Aries, Edward Shorter, Peter Laslett, and others postulated a number of challenging hypotheses. Was the family in former times large in size and extended in shape, and his it undergone“progressive nuclearization” or has the dominant type always been the conjugal family(parents and children) Were the relationships within the family in pre-industrial society“cold” and is affectionate ... moreand humane child-raising, good mothering” a product of industrialization? Were women formerly chattels with few rights in a male-dominated world? Research now permits a synthesis of the findings of modern scholars into a coherent account of the development of marriage and the family through the thousand years of the Middle Ages, from the fall of the Roman Empire to the early modern era. CONDITION: New but NOT unblemished. There is a crease to the spine.but I can find NO evidence the book was ever read. I would suspect it was opened(perhaps left open) in the bookstore. But never read, Pages are absolutely pristine; clean, crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, unambiguously unread. Three Schroeder's Price Guides 9th 11th 17th With Many Items Not In The New Book
Presented Here Is A Set Of Three Schroeder's Antique Price Guide Books Included Are: Seventeenth Edition 1999 Eleventh Edition 1993 Ninth Edition 1991 We have found that having as many previous editions of Shcroeder Guide Books as we can find proves to be very valuable for both buying& selling. If the item you're interested in is not in one edition. Chances are it was covered in an earlier book. These Price Guides have over 50.000 items& more than 600 pages each. That's 150.000 items& over 1800 pages of good information. They include tons of information to help you identify an item. Often. The history of the piece is included. There are lots of photos& drawings. Some measurements& more. Schroeder books travel with us while we're out'junking' or at an auction. It woud be hard to estimate how many ... moreitem's I would otherwise have passed by that I looked up in Schroeder's. Finding that it was a treasure. Conversely. I'll be interested in purchasing a treasure, look it up& find that the price is too high. This gives me great bargaining leverage. Sometimes we will see a piece& have no clue what it is or who made it. A quick flip through the pages often reveals a photo. Leading us to a wealth of information. Perhaps that's one reason so many appraisers use them& why they are in the office of every antique store. To be honest. Sometimes I simply read these books. It's amazing how often I remember seeing something in one later, when I'm out spending. CONDITION NOTES: Each book has been used& enjoyed. These are duplicates from our collection. The conditions I wrote are simply my opinion. If you would like detailed condition photos. Please write. No Problem! None have pages missing or torn. None are falling apart& should last a long time. Here is Item-By-Item: Seventeenth Edition(1999) The cover has wrinkling. Creases& shelf wear. The inside pages are crisp& clean with no writing inside. The spine is a little sunlight faded. Eleven

ANCIENT EGYPTIAN - ROMAN FAYUM PORTRAITS 1st-4th Century Funerary Art in Egypt
Fayum Portraits” By Berenice Geoffrey-Schneiter. Published in New York by Assouline Publishing in 2004. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Miraculously preserved by the dry sands of the Egyptian desert. Some thousand 1st-4th century painted portraits—called"Fayum" after the region they were found in—have fascinated artists and archaeologists for their strange presence. Many are idealized images with dramatic, dark-eyed gazes, yet others are startlingly realistic, capturing the character of individuals from millennia ago. In all, a portrait of a province, which became Roman, comes alive. This book tries to pierce the secret of these fragments of faces. Who were the authors of these portraits, whose modernity of execution does not cease to surprise us? What society was sufficiently rich and proud to exhibit itself ... morethus after death? NEW Human Story History Stone Age to Now Greek Roman Hebrew Holocaust WWII HCDJ
The Human History: Our History. From the Stone Age to Today by James C. Davis. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 466 pages. Publisher: Harper Collins Publishers; 2004) In"The Human Story" James C. Davis takes us on a journey to ancient times, telling how peoples of the world settled down and founded cities, conquered neighbors, and established religions, and continues over the course of history, when they fought two nearly global wars and journeyed into space. Davis's account is swift and clear, never dull or dry. He lightens it with pungent anecdotes and witty quotes. Although this compact volume may not be hard to pick up, it's definitely hard to put down. For example. On the death of Alexander the Great, who in a decade had never lost a single battle, and who had staked out an empire that spanned the entire Near ... moreEast and Egypt, Davis writes: When they heard how ill he was, the king's devoted troops insisted on seeing him. He couldn't speak, but as his soldiers, every one, filed by in silence, Alexander's eyes uttered his farewells. He died in June 323 B.C. at the ripe old age of thirty-two. In similar fashion Davis recounts Russia's triumph in the space race as it happened on an autumn night in 1957: A bugle sounded. Flames erupted, and with a roar like rolling thunder, Russia's rocket lifted off. It bore aloft the earth's first artificial satellite, a shiny sphere the size of a basketball. Its name was Sputnik, meaning'companion' or'fellow traveler' through space) The watchers shouted, Off. She's off. Our baby's off! Some danced; others kissed and waved their arms. Though we live in an age of many doubts. James C. Davis thinks we humans are advancing. As"The Human Story" ends, he concludes, The world's still cruel; that's understood. But once was worse. Wealth of the Ancient World. The Nelson Bunker Hunt and William Herbert Hunt Collections. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 329 pages. Publisher: Kimbell Art Museum in association with Summa Publications; 1984) This book offers an unparalleled opportunity to examine the art. Attitudes and aspirations of classical antiquity- an age far removed from that of our own, but one that still impresses itself strongly upon ours, socially and culturally. The exhibition spans more than a thousand years, extending from the archaic period in Greece and Etruria through the rich style of Sicily and South Italy to the Hellenistic and Roman periods. This epoch witnessed the shift in power from Athens to Rome and the final triumph of the East with the establishment of the new capital in Constantinople. As the exhibition will demonstrate, the ancients converted even their ... moremost prosaic form of wealth- their coinage- into objects of great refinement and artistry. Of the 112 coins selected from the collection of Nelson Bunker Hunt- considered now one of the finest in private hands- many are notably for their rarity, condition or historical importance, but almost all exhibit qualities that distinguish them as works of art. It is well-known that Greek vases are among the greatest artistic legacy of antiquity. Their decoration derives from everyday life as well as from the rich tradition of Greek drama and literature. The fifteen examples that comprise the collection of Nelson Bunker Hunt. All of which will be exhibited, include both black and red-figured pieces of Corinthian, Attic and South Italian workshops. Bronze enjoyed a great importance in antiquity as the primary medium for"pure" sculpture, though today we can also appreciate the imaginative decoration of utilitarian objects in bronze. Both aspects of bronze artistry are reflected in the thirty-eight pieces of the William Herbert Hunt Collection. Among them are acknowledged masterworks of portraiture and small statuary. At the first public showing of the majority of ancient works
