ANTIQUE LADIES FLORAL CABINET & PICTORIAL HOME COMPANION 21 BACK ISSUES 1872-73
ANTIQUE LADIES FLORAL CABINET& PICTORIAL HOME COMPANION 21 BACK ISSUES 1872-73, ANTIQUE LADIES FLORAL CABINET AND PICTORIAL HOME COMPANION- 21 BACK ISSUES 1872-1873- HAND BOUND This Antique Hand Bound Album with 21 Antique Back Issues of THE LADIES FLORAL CABINET and PICTORIAL HOME COMPANION- A Monthly Illustrated Newsprint Magazine by Henry T. Williams of New York- that date from January 1872 thru December 1873 with only 3 months missing- July from both years& April from 1873- was apparently bound by hand a very long time ago& not in any specific order. They are all mixed up with some of the oldest ones at the back. They are 16 1/2 by 12 inches& printed on Newsprint paper with decorative illustrated borders on every page, each issue has 8 pages printed front& back including the covers so there are approx. 168 pages all ... moretogether, they are numbered consecutively, but again the issues are not bound in any particular order, and they are filled with wonderful articles, fabulous illustrations& graphics, of course amazine Antique Advertisements throughout. The illustrated stiff paper cover with the taped spine is worn around the edges with a big torn piece across the bottom corner tip& the tape loose& torn at the heel& along the front- it looks like it was water damaged long ago, both inside covers are lined in the printed paper& the gutter is cracked all the way inside the front cover& a bit at the top inside the back, the 1st few pages are discolored from age& exposure& rippled along the gutter with a bit of faint foxing around the edges, but as you go further into the volume the pages are pretty much clean& tight. There are a few pages more at the back where the center vertical fold line is torn& some of the pages were taped at this point along the outer edge to help prevent this, but even with all of this, this is a fabulous and rare find indeed with fabulous illustrations& ads throughout. I have many other unique Antique and Vintage Collectible items

EARLY AMERICAN PAINTED WALL STENCILS FEDERAL EARLY VICTORIAN FOLK ART STENCILING
American Wall Stenciling 1790-1840” By Ann Eckert Brown. Published by the University Press of New England in 2003. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: In post-revolutionary America. The decoration of choice for a surprisingly large number of home owners from all social and economic groups was walls painted with intricate stenciled designs. Stenciled walls were cheaper and more sanitary than those covered with paper, but the most compelling reason for the widespread use of stenciling was that it was considered far more stylish than impersonal, mass-produced paper. Stencil artists freely borrowed wallpaper motifs and crossbred them. Successive generations of wallpaper, which became increasingly more affordable after the Industrial Revolution, covered stenciled walls, hiding them, obliterating some and preserving others. Ann ... moreEckert Brown's extensive research has unearthed stencils not just in New England's more characteristic homes. Taverns, and inns, but also in the south and midwest. She divides stenciling into rural-based folk art, which uses naturalistic, and sometimes primitive motifs, and classically inspired, urban-based stencils, which feature patterns more refined in scale and earlier in execution, echoing Federal style images. Over 250 illustrations complement Brown's text as she makes fresh stylistic connections among designs, artists, regions, and houses over two centuries, discovering and illuminating some missing links in the history of wall stenciling. Even more, she ties together the shared destinies of the families, descendants, artists, rescuers, and restorers who lived with, created, or have dedicated their lives to preserving, this beautiful art form. She also provides a glossary, a discussion of early paint materials, suggested resources for wall stenciling preservation, and a Who's Who of American wall stenciling which includes 18th, 19th, and 20th century artists and preservationists. FS: 1812 FRENCH EMPIRE DESIGNS & INTERIORS FOR NAPOLEON BY PERCIER & FONTAINE
Recueil de Decorations Interieures. Comprenant tout ce qui a Rapport a l'Ameublement. By Charles Percier& P.F.L. Fontaine. Published in Paris in 1812. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Percier and Fontaine were a talented team of Empire/Neo-Classic designers who helped Napoleon redecorate many of his residences and public buildings in the new Empire styles and also provided the designs and models for the French Empire style in furniture and interior decor. As illustrated here. They met as students at the Paris Ecole des Beaux Arts and worked together in Rome at the French Academy. Lincoln Kirstein has much to say about them and their somewhat complicated relationship with Napoleon in the excellent catalog"The Taste of Napoleon" William Rockhill Nelson Gallery of Art, 1969) from which we take the liberty ... moreof quoting liberally- As architects and designers. Percier and Fontaine contributed greatly to the panoply of elegance with which Napoleon surrounded himself. They were the architects for the Empress Josephine for the remodeling of Malmaison, they were the architects of the Louvre and of the Tuileries. they worked at Saint-Cloud, the Trianon, Compiegne, and Fountainebleau. Percier, supremely disciplined by measuring ancient Roman monuments fused the various strands into a contemporary Parisian antiquarianism.restored to a fresh wholeness, scaled down to modern metropolitan needs, primed for production and use. Elements in the vocabulary-eagles, sphinxes, victories, wreaths, fasces, columns, trophies, insignia-were worked and reworked, but Percier's delineation, his exquisite sense of proportion and fitness, his suggestion of the subtle plasticity of chiseled low-relief, made it seem like a novel metric to hymn Napoleon's epic. But it was not all quite that easy. Relations between the Emperor and his designers could be strained- Napoleon) was unpardonably rude to Charles Percier. A sickly mouse of a man, angelic character, marvelous draftsman, since he was too shy and b

TEAR DOWN THE UNITED STATES TREASURY BUILDING!! - 1838 CONGRESSIONAL ACT
New Treasury and Post Office Buildings[To accompany bill H.R. No.706] Published in Washington; March 29. 1838. 25th Congress, 2d. Session. DISCUSSION: A reminder of a contentious fight over the re-building of the U.S. Treasury and Patent Office after fire had destroyed the old building in 1833. Architect Robert Mills of South Carolina was appointed Architect of Public Buildings by President Andrew Jackson. With the job of overseeing the design and construction of the new Treasury and Patent Office buildings. Ground was broken in 1836, but in January, 1838, with work not yet completed, there was a proposal in Congress to demolish the building. Architect Thomas Walter was asked to issue a report which when published was critical of the design and the buildings, criticisms which were hotly refuted by Mills. A bill was then introduced to demolish ... morethe new Treasury building and use the stone to replace the Post Office building. That bill, which this very detailed and critical Committee report was attached to, was defeated by the slim margin of 94-91, and the next year a triumphant Mills was given the job of designing a new Post Office building by President Jackson. This romantic metropolis has for centuries captured the hearts and imaginations of countless writers. Poets, musicians, artists, and travellers. Paris is renowned for the splendid architecture of its individual buildings and, even more so, for the harmony of the city's overall composition. In Paris there is a uniformity and majesty to the limestone facades of its residences and palaces. It is a city in which urban planning has long played an important part. Visitors admire the order of the Place des Vosges. Developed in the 17th century, the vistas created by Baron Haussmann's boulevards in the 1860s, and the continuing efforts to create innovative, ... moreattractive low-cost housing begun at the start of the 20th century. It is architecture and planning meant to please and to impress, from Les Invalides, the Ecole Militaire, and the Arc de Triomphe to the Grand Projects pursued by President Mitterrand- inspired public buildings by I.M. Pei, Paul Andreu, and Jean Nouvel. Building Paris is Bruce Marshall's account of how Paris came to be the most admired city in the world. Mixing anecdote and history. COUNT RUMFORD AND THE SUPERIOR FIREPLACE - 18th CENTURY FIREPLACE DESIGN
The Forgotten Art of Building a Good Fireplace” By Vrest Orton. Published by Yankee Books in 1974. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The story of Count Rumford& his fireplace designs that have remained unchanged since 1795[and] how to alter unsatisfactory fireplaces& to build new ones in the 18th century fashion" A minor classic. Sir Benjamin Thompson. Count Rumford, FRS(1753-1814) was an American-born British physicist and inventor whose challenges to established physical theory were part of the 19th century revolution in thermodynamics. He also served as a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Loyalist forces in America during the American Revolutionary War. He was an active and prolific inventor, developing improvements for chimneys, fireplaces and industrial furnaces, as well as inventing the double boiler, a kitchen ... morerange, and a drip coffeepot. He invented a percolating coffee pot following his pioneering work with the Bavarian Army, where he improved the diet of the soldiers as well as their clothes. The Rumford fireplace created a sensation in London when he introduced the idea of restricting the chimney opening to increase the updraught, which was a much more efficient way to heat a room than earlier fireplaces. He and his workers modified fireplaces by inserting bricks into the hearth to make the side walls angled, and added a choke to the chimney to increase the speed of air going up the flue. The effect was to produce a streamlined air flow, so all the smoke would go up into the chimney rather than lingering, entering the room, and often choking the residents. It also had the effect of increasing the efficiency of the fire, and gave extra control of the rate of combustion of the fuel, whether wood or coal. Many fashionable London houses were modified to his instructions, and became smoke-free. Thompson also significantly improved the design of kilns used to produce quicklime, and Rumford furnaces were soon being constructed throughout Europe. He became a celebrity when news of his
