American Philadelphia Empire Antique Furniture & Cabinetmakers Pennsylvania
Philadelphia Empire Furniture" By John William Boor. With Allison, Jonathan, Christopher, Peter Boor. Published by the University Press of New England in 2006. DISCUSSION: This volume looks closely for the first time at Philadelphia Empire furniture and the development of decorative arts in Philadelphia between 1800 and 1840. The authors explore Neo-Classicism. Contemporary history of Philadelphia, the emergence of Greek-Revival architecture, and the cabinetmakers of Philadelphia Empire furniture. At the beginning of the 19th century Greek-inspired architecture gained popularity in Philadelphia and the city became known for its classically-inspired monumental buildings. Newly designed structures of ancient inspiration were decorated with classical furniture that became the prevailing style in private homes as well as public buildings. ... moreThe arrival of immigrant craftsmen from Europe in the early 19th century and their subsequent collaboration with American furniture makers produced highly sophisticated Empire designs. Neither French nor English. The designs incorporated purely American elements and became known as American Empire. Nineteenth-century Philadelphia Empire craftsmen were particularly well-known for their extensive motif carving, which often has a fluid, three-dimensional character. Auction Catalog of Rare Antique American Furniture & Historrical Items. Colonial
Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 An auction catalogue for an auction which took place at Sotheby’s in New York. On 20 January, 2006. As the title says, the auction was for“Important Americana: Including Property from the Collection of Elisha Hanson to Benefit the National Gallery of Art. The catalog is full of beautiful antique items, of the sort you would expect to discover in an old American estate or mansion. Tons of furniture, decorative items, lots of rare silver, and much more. Naïve art, grandfather clocks, folk art, paintings, and much more. Items range from 1700s and 1800s– lots of colonial and early American items. The sale consisted of 608 separate lots, all of which have extensive descriptions, all with full colour photos, and some of them even being full-page photos. Each item has a description, giving details of the ... moreartist or workshop, the work itself, dates, material, and so on. Also details of provenance, and provides an estimated price. This is great for the collector, so you can compare the value of these works with others. Also a great reference, as these artworks were assembled here once, only to be dispersed to different private buyers, most not to be seen in public again for a generation. The colour illustrations are stunning, and it’s like having a gallery or museum on your shelf! A great addition for anyone interested in American history, U.S. art, colonial historical material, and so on. The book is large format, measuring about 8 x 11 inches. It has a glossy cover, and is 484 pages long. The book is used, but in good condition. With only minor shelf wear, the book is in good condition. The glossy pages make this extremely heavy(well over 3 pounds) so the top bidder should add $13.90 postage in Canada, 18.90 postage to the USA. I have other, similar catalogs up now, so check that out too, and save on postage. Please e-mail me if you have any questions, and thanks for bidding!

An Interesting Auction Catalog- Highly Important Americana from the Stanley Paul Sax Collection” The catalog to an auction held in New York by Sotheby's on January 16-17th. 1998. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The auction of the superlative collection of this well-known and discerning collector of fine American furniture. Silver and related antiques including textiles, portrait miniatures, clocks and prints. The catalog includes an appreciation of Sax by Wendell Garrett, from which we quote several passages- Modest. Unpretentious, and studious, Stan Sax was good company. To the collecting of American antiques he brought an insatiable curiosity, a pursuit of thoroughness and excellence, and an unquenchable thirst for new intellectual adventures. He was the paragon of a collector- a self of unlimited dimensions; a ... morehugely talented, searching, contemplative, daring, visionary, understanding connoisseur-a gentle personality that inspired friendship and a character that justified confidence. He was taken from us at seventy-one, in the prime of his seniority; it hurts to think of what he would have done with more time, but it also helps to remember how fully he used the time he had. He was an expert authority and passionate collector of high-style American furniture and silver who valued things of beauty with which he surrounded himself, whether books, paintings, or other decorative arts. He had that primary personal attribute for the connoisseur of decorative arts which Charles Montgomery termed, a good visual memory stored with an infinite number of images of ordinary, fine, and superior objects mentally pigeonholed for desirability' Stan was a generous benefactor of gifts to the Diplomatic Reception Rooms of the United States Department of State and the Detroit institute of Arts, and was active in the affairs of the Baltimore Museum of Art, The Henry Ford Museum, and the Friends of the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. ANTIQUE 17th, 18th CENTURY AMERICAN CHAIRS IN THE CONNECTICUT HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Connecticut Chairs in the Collection of The Connecticut Historical Society” By Newton C. Brainard. Published by the Connecticut Historical Society in 1956. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A catalog of 30 pre-1800 chairs. Interesting not only because of the wide variety of Connecticut chairs it illustrates, but also because of the frank and at times brutal commentary. No punches are pulled here, and there is little room accorded for speculation. The Connecticut Historical Society website notes- Newton Case Brainard(1904-1964) became a member of the Connecticut Historical Society on January 5, 1904. From May 19, 1953 until May 21, 1963, Brainard served as the President of CHS, but continued to be an active member of the Standing Committee and the Society until his death on July 16, 1964. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut ... moreon December 26, 1880 to Leverett and Mary(Bulkeley) Brainard. Brainard was a lifelong Connecticut resident, graduating from Yale in 1902 and earning a Master of Arts Degree from Trinity College in 1946. Brainard was very active in his community and in 1920 he was elected Mayor of Hartford. Later, he served on the Board of Park Commissioners. He was an ardent supporter for the erection of a municipal airport and, as such, Brainard Field was named in honor of him and dedicated in 1921. Brainard was also instrumental in saving the Hartford State House and, in part due to his position as Chairman of Hartford’s Fine Arts Commission, oversaw that the building was kept in repair and personally saw to it that the Senate Chamber was refurnished. According to the Society’s Annual Report of 1965, His interests were varied and many, and his friendship for and generosity to this Society were unparalleled” DESCRIPTION: Softcover. 7"x9.5" 67 pages, each chair illustrated with a black& white plate. ANTIQUE AMERICAN KASTEN -EARLY NEW YORK & NEW JERSEY DUTCH-STYLE CUPBOARDS
American Kasten. The Dutch-Style Cupboards of New York and New Jersey. 1650-1800” By Peter M. Kenny. Et al. Published in New York by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1991. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A well illustrated exhibition catalog exploring the origins and uses of these cupboards. Their construction, and extant examples. In a rather critical review of the catalog for the 1993 edition of the Chipstone Foundation's American Furniture journal, Neil Duff Kamil has numerous points to argue with the author's approach and conclusions, although he also found many good points to the catalog, which we will quote here- Scholars concerned that the rapidly expanding historiography of American regional furniture might somehow pass over traditionally neglected New York Colony while questing new territories south ... moreand west of southeastern Massachusetts will welcome the appearance of this handsome new exhibition catalogue. overall. Kenny's attempt to classify, eighteenth century kasten by locality New York City; Kings County; Queens County; the Upper Hudson Valley; and Bergen County is useful, if often also arbitrary, speculative, and, when discussing Long Island, heavily in debt to Failey. Building on Failey's work on western Long Island, Kenny has done a particularly good job synthesizing prior scholarship to make a convincing argument for a coherent group of artifacts attributable to Kings County. The most significant new contribution to the literature is made by Frances Gruber Safford in her section titled"Joined Oak Kasten of the Seventeenth Century, as to my knowledge this is the first time that four of the five surviving oak kasten have been published together and rigorously compared. Safford also includes a final section on grisaille-painted kasten that summarizes past research but does not advance far beyond what is already known. He concludes- In the end, American Kasten remains unconvincing in its rather forced assertion that the kas is simply a quixotic artifa
ANTIQUE AMERICAN COLONIAL FURNITURE -ISRAEL SACK 1932 COLLECTION
An Interesting Auction Catalog- One Hundred Important American Antiques” The catalog to an auction held by Anderson Galleries in New York on January 9th. 1932. Sale 3940. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Colonial and Early Federal Furniture. Silver and Porcelains of Distinguished Provenance by and attributed to Chapin, Cowell, Dummer, Frothingham, Goddard, Gostelow, Hurd, Le Roux, McIntire, Phyfe, Randolph, Revere, Savery, Seymour, Soumaine, Titcomb, The Townsends, Whittemore, Wilder, The Willards, acquired from notable collections by Israel Sack" A 1998 New York Times article noted- The history of Israel Sack Inc. is a rags-to-riches tale. Israel Sack. An immigrant cabinetmaker from Lithuania, opened an antiques store on Charles Street in Boston in 1905. He was attracted to America's early urban furniture, the ... morefancy mahogany and walnut chests, highboys and chairs made in Boston, Newport, R.I. Salem, Mass. New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. He practically invented the field that is known today as Americana. When he started, American furniture was not a collectible form, his son Albert recalled. There were no shows, or any American furniture collections in museums. In the 1920's, Israel Sack moved to New York and started to amass first-rate furniture, and collectors who could afford it. Israel Sack was a brilliant marketer. He sponsored research[and] lectured widely. In the early part of this century, when American society was enamored of English antiques, he persuaded people to pay a premium for pieces made in America. You can tell American furniture by its accent, he liked to say. He argued that American furniture has its own qualities; instead of ornamentation and gilding, it has form, line, proportion, craftsmanship and rarity. He declared it an art form. From the 1920's until his death in 1959, Israel Sack sold to the top collectors of Americana: Henry Ford, Henry Francis duPont, Mabel and Francis Garvan, and Charles K. Davis, president of the Remington Arms Company

Published in Boston by Houghton Mifflin and Company in1924. Revised 3rd edition. Limited to 515 copies. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The first book on this subject. Initially published in 1891. As the Wards point out(Ames& Ward) Lyon introduced many techniques used by later researchers, including the use of estate and inventory records, newspaper advertisements and cabinetmaker's price books, and he also traveled to England to investigate the origins of his beloved 17th century New England furniture. A pioneering study which is still useful. Stillinger concludes- Lyon's conclusions about the homes of the forefathers have held up startlingly well. The Colonial Furniture ... moreof New England' was so carefully researched and thoughtfully crafted that it remains a standard reference today-an extraordinary accomplishment considering the sophisticated research and technological aids available to the modern student of furniture. No other early furniture scholar's work has the same continuing validity. Dr. Lyon once told an acquaintance that in his medical practice his goal was always to get back to first causes. AMERICAN ANTIQUE PHILADELPHIA EMPIRE PERIOD FURNITURE & CABINETMAKERS
Philadelphia Empire Furniture” By John William Boor. With Allison, Jonathan, Christopher, Peter Boor. Published in Hanover by the University Press of New England in 2006. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: This volume looks closely for the first time at Philadelphia Empire furniture and the development of decorative arts in Philadelphia between 1800 and 1840. Newly designed structures of ancient inspiration were decorated with classical furniture that became the prevailing style ... morein private homes as well as public buildings. The arrival of immigrant craftsmen from Europe in the early 19th century and their subsequent collaboration with American furniture makers produced highly sophisticated Empire designs. Neither French nor English, the designs incorporated purely American elements and became known as American Empire. Nineteenth-century Philadelphia Empire craftsmen were particularly well-known for their extensive motif carving, which often has a fluid, three-dimensional character. Philadelphia Empire Furniture' illustrates in color and describes in detail hundreds of Philadelphia decorative art forms from this period, including wood types, dimensions, and maker(if known) Chapters are dedicated to each of the following forms: card tables. Platform pedestal tables, pier tables, worktables, sofas, chairs, sideboards, secretaries, chests, bedsteads, looking glasses, clocks, and other decorative elements. A separate chapter is devoted to the previously unpublished sketchbook of accomplished craftsman Anthony G. Quervelle. Besides Quervelle, other talented and successful Philadelphia furniture makers included Michel Bouvier, Charles White,

Nicholson made headlines in the 1980s when he broke record after record buying premier pieces of American colonial and federal furniture and related decorative arts at auction. And then made headlines again when he sold it all. The catalog Christie's produced for the sale is a sumptuous hardcover, packed so full of color illustrations and folding color plates that it almost explodes right off the bookshelf. Nicholson's 2011 New York Times obituary relates- Eddy G. Nicholson. A spark plug of a man who was the son of a factory worker in Sherman, ... moreTex. began collecting early American artifacts in the early 1980s, flush from his recent success in high finance. His blunt, hard-driving style unnerved some buyers steeped in Old World collector traditions of propriety, art scholarship and, above all, privacy. For one thing, he would sit there with an auction paddle, which was unusual, said John Hays, the deputy chairman of Christie’s America, who became a friend. Important buyers usually sent surrogates or bid by phone, he explained. And if he wanted something, he added, nothing could stop him. Mr. Nicholson helped push prices to unprecedented heights. Bidding on an 18th-century Philadelphia Chippendale wing chair at Sotheby’s in 1986, he made the first bid at $400,000, and kept hoisting his paddle high while imperceptible signals from competitors around the room(an earlobe tug, a crossing of arms) drove the sale price to $1.1 million, then a record for American furniture, according to an account in The New York Times. Mr. Nicholson got his wing chair. In 1980 Mr. Nicholson was president of Congoleum, a publicly traded conglomerate involved in military contracting, auto supplies and floor covering, when he and a fello

ANTIQUE AMERICAN FURNITURE & ANTIQUES - BAYOU BEND IMA HOGG COLLECTION
American Decorative Arts and Paintings in the Bayou Bend Collection” By David B. Warren. Michael K. Brown, Elizabeth Ann Coleman, Emily Ballew Neff. Published by the Museum of Fine Arts. Houston in 1998. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A stunning. Oversized catalog of this important collection, including furniture, art, textiles, silver, ceramics and glass. The'Bayou Bend Collection' was assembled by Ima Hogg. A collector of American arts during the first"Golden Age" from the 1920s through the 1950s. Bayou Bend is the former home of Houston philanthropist Ima Hogg. The mansion, designed by architect John F. Staub, was built between 1927 and 1928 for Ima Hogg and her brothers, William C. and Michael Hogg. Miss Hogg created a series of gardens that were intended as outdoor rooms for living and entertaining. ... moreIn 1957, Miss Hogg donated her home and her collection to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Bayou Bend opened to the public in 1966. Staub's plan for Bayou Bend combined eighteenth-century Georgian architecture with elements that are distinctly Southern and of Spanish Creole architecture. The collection at Bayou Bend presently consists of approximately 4,700 objects that reflect historic and stylistic periods from 1620 to 1870 installed in some 28 period room settings that showcase American decorative arts from 1620 through 1870. Miss Hogg began assembling this important collection of American decorative arts in 1920. To provide suitable settings for these extraordinary antiques. Staub designed simple but stately interiors in the style of colonial American rooms. In 1920, while sitting for a portrait by artist Wayman Adams, Miss Hogg admired a simple armchair belonging to the artist that was made in colonial America and later obtained a similar Queen Anne chair for herself. Almost half a century later, Miss Hogg acquired the very same chair that she had first seen in Adams' studio. From the time I acquired my first Queen Anne armchair in 1920, I had an unaccountable
