Books about Nantucket, Old Street Signs and The Nantucket Lightship Basket. The portion about silversmiths takes up the bulk of the book(pp 8-33) with biographies and marks of 8 known silversmiths and mention of almost a dozen more. In addition, there is a three-page photographic facsimile of the"Joseph Barrett" manuscript which had just surfaced in New York. The Barrett manuscript was supposed to be a 1753 illustrated manuscript detailing spoon-making techniques, a forgery which evidently looked more convincing at ... morethe time than it does in hindsight; it is an interesting sidelight into the history of Nantucket silver nonetheless. The chapter on Nantucket Lightship Baskets runs from page 65 to 72, and contains 4 photos, one of a single basket, one of several nested sets, one of a selection of 11 baskets, and one of the Lightship itself(of course) Everett Umberto Crosby[1871-1960] was a longtime Nantucket historian and the author of half a dozen or more books and pamphlets about the art and history of the island. a director of the Nantucket Foundation.
