Pectoral cross is a devotional pendant worn as a vestment by Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Bishops. This filigree vintage cross is hand made with solid 925 sterling silver. The pendant is decorated with a large ruby stone surrounded by white sapphires in the middle and four smaller ruby stones at the ends of the cross. Roman Purple Holy Rood Guild Priest Chasuble and Stole
A perfect find for Lent! Up for auction is a Holy Rood Guild Roman purple priest chasuble and stole with decorative tapestry around the neck. The Holy Rood Guild in Spencer. MA, is known for the beauty, quality and longevity of their vestments. A comparable chasuble and stole set today would sell for close to $500 and most of their designs are over $1000. This particular chasuble and stole are older and are gently used, although it is clean and without stains or other markings. There is a zipper at the neck(see photo) which keeps the chasuble well fitted. Pease note that the stitching holding the tapestry in place is coming undone on the right shoulder and in a few other places(see photos) Thankfully, it has not caused damage to the vestment and could easily be re-sewn. In fact, I believe that the owner could decide to remove the tapestry ... moreentirely without causing damage to the vestment, if desired. Some of the hem on the back of the vestment is slightly undone, but again, could easily be fixed. The chasuble is unlined, while the stole is lined. Measurements are approximate: about 80" wide when spread out, about 48" from the neck to the bottom in the front and about 52" from the neck to the bottom in the back. This is a"Chasuble" which is the outermost liturgical vestment worn by clergy for the celebration of the Eucharist in Western-tradition Christian Churches that use full vestments. The chasuble measures about 43 inches long from the top of the collar to bottom hem. It has the old style"bell-shape" to it. The material is a creamish white linen-blend? like material. The chasuble is embroidered with art deco lines and"IHS" ... morewhich of course stands for In His Service. This robe is vintage and used. It would benefit from a dry cleaning. We have not done so. There is some wear consistent with age and being worn. This wear might be found in frayed material, frayed trim, etc. There are quite a few spots/stains on this piece and yellowing around the collar. Difficult to date precisely. But I would guess 1940s or 50s. The piece is made of black rayon moire and lined in purple rayon acetate. The garment is crossed at both the front and back with purple velvet. The back has a printed image of Jesus wearing a crown of thorns- I believe that this chasuble would have been used for Good Friday service. Black and purple are colors typically used during Lent, but black was also used on All Souls Day and at funerals. The image of Jesus is quite beautiful, edged with metallic gold ... morerickrack and accented with gold and satin roping. It is in very good condition with the exception of some yellowish discoloration to the velvet, mostly to the top and bottom and at seam joints. Otherwise, it is in very good condition and looks great. It measures 55 across the top from the end of one sleeve, over the shoulders, and to the end of the other sleeve. It has a length of 47 and weighs 1 lb and 4 oz.
