A wonderful victorian fireplace tile. Earthenware clay hand painted and glazed fireplace tile. 6" square x 1/2" thick. A pair of darling sweet little birds sitting on the branches of a vine. Colours of burnt sienna and ginger. 2 fine lines of burnt sienna border the tile. Art Deco Terra Cotta Brick Glazed Facade Tile Chicago Northwestern Terra Cotta
Offered for auction is a great vintage piece of Chicago history. This fabulous tile façade brick was made by the Northwestern Terra Cotta Co in the 1920’s. This company provided terra cotta bricks and tiles for many of the famous architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Sullivan. Many of the landmark buildings in Chicago have decorative elements provided by this company. The brick is classic Art Deco with a fabulous incised design. It is glazed a red terra cotta color with flecks of black and gray. It is glazed on all sides but the glaze has been rubbed off on one edge. The tile is in very good condition. It has minor scrapes here and there with a large chip on the backside of one end. Both top and bottom. This would not be visible with installation and does not affect the ability to use the brick. 2" Antique MINTON HOLLINS& CO Fireplace Relief Tile 1860-1890 Victorian Moulded This is a lovely little tile from Minton. Hollins& Co. Circa 1860s-1890s. It is a brown/taupe relief tile from a fireplace. It features a pretty pinecone-like design. This tile bears an impressed circular insignia on reverse: MINTON, HOLLINS& Co. Inside of the circle is the number 2I2 with EB beneath. There is a P outside the circle on the right bottom corner and a X sign in the lower left corner. In 1845. Herbert Minton took Michael Daintry Hollins into partnership. And the tile-making side of the business became known as Minton Hollins& Co. Herbert Minton's successful experiments in making encaustic tiles during the 1840s( Encaustic tiles are ceramic tiles with a decoration made of different colours of clay inlaid into the surface. I acquired this from the basement of an estate in Philadelphia. May have come from somewhere in the city. or it could have come up from the southern states with the previous owner. Thick heavy terra cotta tile about 1/2inch thick. Only a small chip on one corner out of the heavy smooth glazed design. see the pictures please. Some small areas of mortar along the edges indicating that it was part of a larger design. A little over 8 x8 inch square and weighs nearly 3 lbs. Very nice Please email any questions.

Lot of 4 J. J.G. Low Glazed tiles from the 1880's. The top three tiles measure approximately 6.125" x 2.25" Minor chips and crazing around the edges as pictured. All three of these tiles are catalogued in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The large tile measures 6.125" x 3.125" It has some chips along the edges and appears to have been used. There is also some glaze loss on the face of the tile as pictured. Please ask if you have questions and let me know if you need additional photos.

I believe the tile was designed by Arthur Osborne and features the relief of an elderly woman with the word"Industria" in the upper left hand corner. The tile is glazed in an olive green and marked"A" in the bottom right hand corner. Clearly impressed on the back side and copyrighted in 1881. Measures 6" square.
