A set of 4 antique Chinese pith paintings depicting flowers and butterflies in China. 1850 A.D. Qing Dynasty, China. Framed. Frame size: 35 x 29 cm. Visible ... moresize: 23.4 x 15.7 cm. Condition: Good for its age. As seen in the photos. Pith comes from the central column of spongy cellular tissue in the stem of a small tree called Tetrapanax Papyrifera. Native to south-west China. It has had a variety of uses. Some going back many centuries. At the imperial court both men and women wore colored flowers made from pith in their hair. It has been used to produce toys for children and in craftwork. It is still sold as Chinese medicine to make a diuretic infusion. For use in painting. It is cut by hand with a knife into thin sheets from short lengths of the spongy tissue. Cutting is highly skilled and the constraints of the process mean that the finished sheets for painting seldom. If ever, measure more than about 30 cms by 20 cms. The sheets are dried. Trimmed and used for painting without any further processing. Some European museums claim that their paintings on pith(often erroneously called“rice paper” or“mulberry pith” come from the end of the eighteenth century but there do not seem to be any dateable examples that are so early. There is a record of the Kaiser Franz of Austria buying some albums from an English Consul-General Watts in 1826. We know of an Italian Count who visited Canton in 1828 and had over 350 paintings on pith in his baggage when he died in Ambon two years later. In the British Library there is a scrap-book containing six pith paintings and a journal entry by a serving British officer who sent them home from India in 1829. These examples and contemporary accounts by visitors to Canton suggest that there was a flourishing trade in pith paintings by the early 1830s. Very light wear, moderately light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: A remarkably well preserved bronze ring circa 3rd century A.D. As you can see. The ring is very bold, handsome, and elegant in design. The"bezel" ... moreor face of the ring is engraved with a classic lightening bolt design accentuated with a periphery line composed of diagonal multiple hash marks at the four corners of the bezel. The diagonal has marks on the both sides are considered by many scholars to be“large” lightening bolts, i.e. a close-up of one zig-zag. Within the frame formed by the two opposing“single zig-zag” lightening bolts is an exceeding finely engraved tight series of zig-zags, forming a long, intricate lightening bolt from the top to the bottom edge of the bezel. Though it is hard to discern from some angles of view as it is so exceedingly fine, the engraved lightening bolt design is remarkably well preserved, very intricate, and bears very minimal signs of wear(anything more than very light wear and the central elongated zig-zag will wear smooth and disappear, leaving only the flanking“close-up” single zig-zags) However with respect to this specimen. Both the bezel and the bands evidence very light wear, and the elongated central lightening bolt is entirely intact. Of course, close examination will nonetheless reveal unmistakable signs of wear. CONDITION: Excellent. No cracks, chips, breakage, or repairs. Minor scratches and scuffs consistent with use and then burial in soil. Typical soil deposits caused by prolonged burial in soil) DETAIL: This is a very handsome. Complete and unrepaired second century A.D. Roman green glass unguent or oil bottle of fairly sizeable dimensions. Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1 ½ ... moreand 3 inches in size. These small jars, pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles and flasks were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. In fact whatever the Romans had produced in clay in the first and second centuries B.C. was by the first and second centuries A.D. more commonly produced in glass. However the larger pieces of glass are rarely found intact. The Romans for instance produced fluted, engraved, multi-tiered, and cut glass bowls of fantastic quality and design– and only a few intact specimens have ever been recovered intact. In fact even the smaller pieces such as this are rarely recovered intact except as grave goods. This piece as you can see has a fairly well-formed and defined lip. And a neck beneath slightly tapered neck– overall a somewhat primitive specimen. Normally this would have been used to dispense aromatic oils or other unguents. Possessing a very pleasing green color, this bottle is probably amongst the earlier Roman

Overall only moderately light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) except for one“hot spot” corroded hole in band. Professionally conserved. DETAIL: An exceptionally heavy. Massively constructed, very well preserved bronze ring circa 4th century A.D. As you can see, the ... morering is very bold, handsome, and elegant in design. The"bezel" or face of the ring is engraved with a classical starburst design accentuated with hash marks on sculpted shouldered bands. Not a terribly uncommon theme for the time, but very well executed. Starburst themes of one variety or another were a very popular geometric design during the first few centuries A.D. This particular depiction is quite characteristic of the era except for rather uncommon crosshatched lines which connect the four arms of the starburst; forming a peripheral diamond border to the bezel’s circumference. All of the engraving exhibits very fine workmanship, and is mostly intact– though it is obvious that the ring was worn in life. The ring is very heavily constructed and weighs several times as much as most similar rings of the era. There is a very modest amount of wear evidenced. Though clearly it was worn in ancient times. The amount of wear is not excessive and is not discernible except upon close scrutiny. The extent of this wear is more evident on the bands than on the bezel. The ring possesses the gorgeous, medium tone so characteristic of ancient bronze. There

It was also thought to give courage to those who wore the gemstone, and also to provide a positive influence on the reproductive system. DETAIL: This is a very handsome silver antoninianus produced in the city of Rome itself sometime during the year 244 A.D. The coin is in superb condition. Evidencing only very light wear from circulation in ancient Rome. It was well struck both front and back, on a very generous planchet(blank) and was well-centered. Unlike most coins of the era, the strike caught the entirely of both the legends and the themes, and this is applicable to both the obverse as well as the reverse. The only shortcoming of the specimen is that quite characteristic of the coinage of the era, the reverse strike was struck with a worn die, and so the reverse is of lower profile and not quite as finely detailed as is the obverse. These coins were all struck by hand(of course) and the reverse dies were generally used about three times as long as were the obverse dies(which contained the emperor’s image and so had better be sharp and well struck) Consequentially as the rear die was used for tends of thousands of strikes. Even half-way through its life the die was worn down, and the resulting reverse strikes were of lower pr

Here's an well preserved Roman bronze ring circa fifth century A.D. Rather than the ring archaic style of construction. Where the bezel is crafted separately from the band, and then attached; this is the more advanced Roman design which incorporated the bezel and bands into one piece, much like a contemporary ring. This gives the ring a very classical, almost timeless character. You can see that the ring possesses a“sculpted” design. The bezel or center portion of the ring is an elevated oval shaped pyramid. The bezel is flanked top and bottom with quite distinct arrow shaped accents which point, when worn, to the bezel and away from the finger(perpendicular to the band) Flanking the other two sides of the bezel, positioned further down along the band, are two more, albeit longer, arrow shaped accents parallel to the band. Icons of Renaissance Architecture by Alexander Markschies. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 144 pages. Publisher: Prestel; 2003) The Renaissance was aesthetically one of the most demanding and fascinating periods in the history of architecture. It developed out of Filippo Brunelleschi's Foundllings' Hospital in Florence and subsequently evolved into a pan-European phenomenon. The end of this period being marked by works by Carlo Maderno, Inigo Jones and Elias Holl. The style is based on rationality and clarity, the harmony of proportions and a balanced relationship between the individual and the whole. As opposed to other ... moreworks on Renaissance architecture. NEW 29BC Aeneid of Virgil Troy Falls Rome Founded Cyclops Dido Queen of Carthage
Virgil: The Aeneidl. Translated by John W. Mackail. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 213 pages. Publisher: Borders Classics; 2004) In Aeneas. The quintessential epic of Roman antiquity, a work with deep roots in the Homeric tradition, Virgil created the most powerful figure in Latin literature, the dutiful yet fallible Trojan prince who overcomes war, suffering and countless setbacks to lay the foundations of the Roman race. Aeneas, a Trojan hero, abandons his captured city, taking his father and little son. His destiny is to found Rome and father the Roman race. While journeying to Italy, Aeneas must prove his capability for his illustrious task. He battles terrifying storms in the Mediterranean, encounters the fearsome Cyclops, falls in love with charismatic Dido, Queen of Carthage, enters the Underworld, and wages war in Italy, ... moreVirgil's"Aeneid" thrilling, terrifying and moving, has inspired numerous artists, writers and musicians, including Dante, Milton, Purcell, and Turner. It falls to every generation to translate anew the great classics which are woven into the fabric of our Western tradition. Virgil has always had the fortune of attracting as translators fellow poets. It is in succession to Dryden and William Morris that C. Day Lewis. Himself a distinguished poet and now Professor of Poetry at Oxford, has written this modern version of"The Aeneid" C. Day Lewis has evolved a long, loosely flowing line which catches the subtleties, the taut vigor, and the sweep of Virgil's verse. The power of such a translation is to be measured not only in the great"set pieces" with which"The Aeneid" glitters. But also in the furthering of the whole movement of the poem and in its revelation of the philosophy sustaining it. Judged by such standards, Professor Day Lewis' new translation stands out as wholly admirable. In this, their own version, readers of the present day will find the beauty, the nobility, the excitement, and the humanity which make"The Aeneid

It is in relatively good condition. Substantial wear from circulation in ancient Rome, but the legends and themes remain clear and distinct. It was well struck both front and back the result a little irregular but very typical for the era. Atypical for the era, the strike was well-centered, and so caught most of both the legends and the themes, and this is applicable to both the obverse as well as the reverse. The coin is just a little undersized, too small to catch the entire strike(a few letters of the legends are missing- a quite common characteristic of the era) But on the other hand, it is a very thick coin in remarkably high relief, almost as if it were ancient Greek coin. On the whole it is without a doubt a very well struck coin, the slightly undersized nature of the planchet being more than made up by the thickness of the coin and the height of the relief. The obverse of the coin depicts the head of the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus, depicted with laureate crown; and the legend"L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP VIII" L SEPT SEV" of course refers to the Emperor's name, Lucius Septimius S

The style, which was also very popular in earrings, is known as a“leech” style for obvious reasons. As you can see(with some difficulty) the surface of the bracelet bears a fairly complex series of punch dot style decorative lines running parallel with the circumference on both sides of the bracelet. The bracelet is fairly large and would fit a lady of slim to medium build, or a man of very slender build, and with that caveat, is completely and eminently wearable. The bracelet was recovered unbroken and intact. As is ordinarily the case. The artifact exhibits some substantial porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in earth) Unlike so many smaller bronze artifacts which are completely destroyed by corrosion, this particular piece is still intact. However it clearly spent almost two thousand years in fairly corrosive soil conditions. You can see how corrosion/oxidation has sculpted the metal into a series of shallow scallops. The effect is not unappealing– it looks quite a bit like the nugget style bracelets which were so wildly popular in the USA in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Despite the

Time-Life Great Ages of Man Series– Imperial Rome. CONDITION: Excellent. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR JACKET DESCRIPTION(S) AND FOR PAGES OF PICTURES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover: 190 pages. Publisher: Time-Life Books Inc. 1967) The“Great Ages of Man” series was released in the mid-1960’s. Each volume undertakes to describe the major events that happened in one specific time period(or“age” in the development of mankind’s civilization(s) The volumes are richly illustrated. And designed as an introduction to the time frame covered. Especially compelling are the artists interpretations or recreations of what various ancient civilizations would have looked like– their architecture, homes, monuments, cities, daily life, jewelry, food, family life, dwellings, occupations, etc. As just one instance, the ruins of Babylon and Ur, Athens ... moreand Rome hint at the incredible richness of those fabled cities. The artist’s recreations in this series are simply mind-numbing. This is as close as you can be to actually having been there. Equally noteworthy are the photographic collections of artifacts and relics attributed to the specific age, really exceptional. The entire series is truly a magnificent introduction to the history of the era. If you could have just one book(or series of books) to introduce the history of humankind. This would have to be it. The overviews are concise and well-written. Together with the illustration and pictures they impart a wonderful mental and emotional“picture” of what life must have been like in various civilizations and at various times. Done in a style so wonderfully characteristic of Time-Life’s publications, these are over-sized“coffee table” type books full of impressive imagery. The pictures of the world’s greatest art and architecture alone are worth the cost of these books. But don’t get the impression that these volumes are“fluff” While a particular volume might not quite take the place as a university degree, the material is well-written, informative, and imm

NEW Renaissance Venice Convent Nuns “Virgins of Venice” Illicit Lovers Politics
Virgins of Venice: Broken Vows and Cloistered Lives in the Renaissance Convent by Mary Laven. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 282 pages. Publisher: Viking; 2003) Venice in the late Renaissance was a city of fabulous wealth. Reckless creativity, and growing social unrest as its maritime empire crumbled. It was also a city of walls and secrets, ghettos and cloisters- including fifty convents housing three thousand nuns, many of them refined, upper-class women who had been immured against their will. In this utterly fascinating book. Cambridge historian Mary Laven uncovers the long-hidden stories of the"Virgins of Venice" and the secret, and often surprising, lives they led. Sifting through records kept during the Counter-Reformation. Laven has created a detailed and dramatic tapestry of resourceful, determined, often passionate ... morewomen who managed to lead fulfilling lives despite their virtual imprisonment. Far from being precincts of piety and silence, the convents of Venice were hotbeds of political scheming, colorful pageantry, gorgeous decoration, and illicit love affairs. One nun was so determined to sleep with her lover that she painstakingly chipped a hole in a stone wall so he could climb through under cover of night. Another expressed her individuality through obsessive gift giving while keeping records of the dangerous flirtations going on around her. Still others exercised considerable clandestine power in the dangerous game of Venetian politics. Rich in intrigue and gossip. The ancient Greeks' word for them was Tyrrhenoi. Or Tyrrsenoi. The Etruscans themselves used the term Rasenna, which was syncopated to Rasna or Ra?na. As distinguished by its own language, the civilization endured from an unknown prehistoric time prior to the foundation of Rome until its complete assimilation to Italic Rome in the Roman Republic. Numerous artifacts of Etruscan culture survived the Roman conquest. At its maximum extent during the foundation period of Rome and the Roman kingdom. It flourished in three confederacies: of Etruria, of the Po valley and Latium and of Campania. Rome was sited in Etruscan territory. Cruelty and Civilization: The Roman Games by Roland Auguet. DESCRIPTION: Published at $39.99] Hardback with Dust Jacket: 222 pages. Publisher: Barnes& Noble; 1998) The great spectacles of Ancient Rome were not merely casual entertainment. A matter of choice for the audience, like the modern theatre. Under the Empire the games had become a public opiate and they ended by giving the daily life of Rome its rhythm and luster. From one year to the next, the Roman citizens lived in anticipation of the games; they provided excitement and helped the citizens forget the mediocrity of their own condition and their lack of political power. In the course of endless festivals, the most minutely organized productions were staged at vast expense, and Rome developed its own cult of the'star' This cult was not the product of naive popular imagery: ... moreidols and outcasts at the same time, yet doomed to a bloody death, the champions of the arena were the instruments of collective pleasure. Roland Auguet has not restricted himself to the detailed reconstruction of these spectacles; he has also analyzed the emotions of the crowd and the motives of the rulers. He explains why the games were so important in the life of the city and what the popularity of these spectacles, this strange combination of“Cruelty and Civilization” reveals about the mentality of the citizens of Rome. The book also includes twenty-four illustrations that capture the pomp and drama of the Roman games. CONDITION: New and unread. Burns marshals an abundance of archeological and literary evidence, as well as three decades of study and experience, to bring forth a perceptive and wide-ranging account of the relations between Romans and non-Romans along the frontiers of Western Europe from the last years of the Republic into late antiquity. Surveying a 500-year time span. Beginning with early encounters ... morebetween barbarians and Romans around 100 B.C. and ending with the spread of barbarian settlement within the western Empire around A.D. 400, Burns removes the barbarians from their former narrow niche as invaders and conquerors and places them in the broader context of neighbors, sometimes bitter) friends, and ultimately settlers and prospective Romans, themselves. This nuanced history shows how Rome's relations with the barbarians- and vice versa- slowly but inexorably evolved from general ignorance. Hostility, and suspicion toward tolerance, synergy, and integration. What he describes is, in fact, a drawn-out period of acculturation, characterized more by continuity than by change and conflict, leading to the creation of a new Romano-barbarian hybrid society and culture that anticipated the values and traditions of medieval civilization. The Romans: An Introduction to Their History and Civilization by Karl Christ. Translated from the German by Christopher Holme. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 294 pages. Publisher: University of California; 1985) Roman civilization is one of the bases of the modern world. The extraordinary achievements of Rome- political. Military, cultural- and its dramatic, thousand-year history, during which it grew to dominate the whole world of classical antiquity before being overwhelmed in its turn, have been continuously studied and variously interpreted ever since. Rome has been commended for its administration, praised for its system of justice, admired for its arts and technology, extolled for its"virtues, such as love, freedom, independence, discipline, courage, and austerity. It has also been condemned for its aggression, its exploitation of slaves, ... moreits excesses, and the decadence that led to its decline. But such was Rome's impact, and so remarkable was the empire it built, that its influence has never ceased to be felt. Whether as a model of political power. Of moral behavior, or of social control, Rome, with its splendors and triumphs, its failings and disasters, is an inexhaustible quarry for the lessons that its history offers and the legacies that it has bequeathed. Karl Christ conveys the essence of this vital Roman tradition with a coherence and compact precision that few scholars, if any, have been able to achieve. Following the main chronological developments of Roman history, he combines the necessary minimum of political and military narrative with lucid social and economic analysis, separate chapters on Roman ways of life and law, and wide-ranging coverage of literature, art, science, technology, and religion. With maps and photographs as well as a specially prepared bibliography for further reading, The Romans" is the most up-to-date, authoritative and comprehensive single-volume introduction to the history and civilization of Ancient Rome. Sapphires have been since ancient times one of the most highly valued of all gemstones, and references to the gemstone date back to about 800 B.C. The result is an exquisite and incredibly richly colored precious gemstone with lots of depth and gorgeous tone. It is considerably lighter than inky"midnight blue" African or Australian sapphires, but well past the medium blue of sapphires from Ceylon and Burma. It would be considerably lighter to the eye except that the cabochon gemstone is so thick. Naturally the thicker the gemstone the darker it appears, as there is more material for light to penetrate. Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons; 1955) This is the story of the vanished race which for nearly 400 years. Until the rise of Rome in the fifth century B.C. exercised power over Central Italy and the Mediterranean. Everything about the Etruscans is mysterious. The Romans, their successors in dominion over Italy, sought systematically to delete all trace of them from the face of the earth. Superficially the attempt almost succeeded, for it was not until two centuries ago that archaeology began effectively to restore the Etruscans to history. But in reality the attempt was always doomed to failure because, as this book sets out to show, the soil of ... moreEtruria was so steeped in the spirit of the Etruscans that their influence was never extinct or even dormant, least of all among their conquerors, the Romans themselves. Frau Sibylle von Cles-Reden. A trained archaeologist, describes the Etruscan sites and brings them back to life with the imagination of an artist. Each major site in turn: Caere, Vulci, Clusium, Volsinium and the rest, is seen to represent one or another of the major fields of Etruscan achievement: pottery or sculpture, painting or architecture, religion or the Etruscan way of life. Each leads her in turn to a fascinatingly discursive account of a different aspect of Etruscan history, in which her sensitive awareness of the continuity of the race and the timeless quality of their native landscape is matched by a large number of magnificent photographs. The Etruscan mystery has never been more sympathetically evoked, nor more nearly unraveled. CONDITION: Modestly used. Clean. Pages are unmarked, no notes or highlighting, unmutilated, remaining well bound. Cloth covers are clean. Dustjacket shows only modest edge and corner shelfwear, one small 3/4 inch edge tear(neatly mended) at the top edge of the front side,

NEW Hannibal Enemy of Rome Carthage War Elephants 257pg
Hannibal: Enemy of Rome by Leonard Cottrell. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 257 pages. Publisher: Da Capo Press; 1992) ISBN: 0306804980. In the year 216 B.C. Hannibal of Carthage, faced with an opposing Roman army twice the size of his own, outwitted the enemy at Cannae by means which has become a classic of its kind. As a result of his famous"double pincer" maneuver, 70,000 Roman soldiers died within the space of a few hours on a field the size of New York's Central Park. Yet as devastating and startling as Cannae was, it was only one of a long list of incredible achievements. Hannibal's fantastic 1,000 mile march across the Alps from Spain to Italy was one of the wonders of ancient times. He began his hazardous journey with 90,000 infantry, 12,000 cavalry, and 37 elephants. By the time he reached Northern Italy's Po Valley, ... moremore than 30,000 of his troops and many of his elephants had perished. However despite this setback, Hannibal still managed to stay in Italy for sixteen years. Blending in biography and military adventure. Hannibal: Enemy of Rome" is a portrait of a military genius who was also a highly civilized man. The son of Hamilcar Barca, a famous general in his own right, Hannibal was a student of the Greek classics. But his father's lifelong grudge against Rome fostered in the son a great hatred for that Republic and a fierce determination to subdue it forever. This resulted in the bloody battles of Lake Trasimene, Campagnia, Nola, Capua, and Zama, all of which Leonard Cottrell describes with vigor and authority. In gathering material for"Hannibal: Cottrell traveled the entire route that Hannibal took across the Alps, thus bringing to his account a valuable first-hand knowledge of his subject. With the drama and authenticity for which he is famous, Leonard Cottrell describes Hannibal's amazing campaign. It was a saga of victory after victory, which fell just short of its ultimate goal; the annihilation of Rome. CONDITION: Remainder mark on bottom. Otherwise New, never

He changed the course of European history and delayed the invasions of the east for five hundred years. Caesar Against the Celts” takes the reader on each of Caesar’s campaigns in ancient France, Britain, and Germany, describing his battles on land and sea, including the invasions of England, the bridge across the Rhine, and sieges of numerous Celtic strongholds. Though Caesar’s dangerous leap across the Channel to mysterious Britain was perhaps the most spectacular feat of his northern campaigns. The climax of the war occurred at Alesia, in ... morecentral France. Here the young Celtic warrior Vercingetorix, commanding a huge coalition of rebellious tribes, finally surrendered to Caesar after an epic siege, only to be carted off to Rome in chains and put to death after his opponent’s triumphal parade. Through the narrative are descriptions of the clothing. Armor, weapons and tactics of Caesar’s devastating legionary army, as well as those of the Celtic tribes that covered Western Europe. This work also reflects the results of modern archaeological, linguistic, and historical research, including identification of the sites of many of Caesar’s battles, camps, and sieges. Julius Caesar was. Of course, his own war correspondent, leaving behind his“Commentaries on the Gallic War” as a unique record of these momentous campaigns. But modern scholarship suggests that his account of his battles in the north is less than the complete story, and that its rich detail masks a calculated political tract. Caesar Against the Celts” presents the facts, the myths, and the speculations not only about what Caesar achieved, but also how and why. The war against the Celts is described fully within the context of Caesar’s political career,

NEW Courtier Life Renaissance Italy Castiglione’s Cortegiano Ettiquette 1528AD
The Fortunes of the Courtier: The European Reception of Castiglione’s Cortegiano by Peter Burke. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 210 pages. Publisher: The Pennsylvania State University Press; 1995) List Price $35.95] Castiglione's“Cortegiano” Or“Book of the Courtier” is often read as a book embodying the spirit of the High Renaissance in Italy. It is therefore easy to forget that Castiglione wrote the Courtier as a practical guide to contemporary conduct and that it quickly became a huge success outside Italy. More than a hundred editions have appeared in numerous languages since its first publication in 1528. With this in mind, cultural historian Peter Burke sets forth in his brilliant new book to explore how readers over the years have responded to the Courtier. Because it was read so widely in Europe. The Courtier affords Burke an ideal test ... morecase for the diffusion and reception of ideas. From Poland and Hungary to England, Portugal, and even the New World, he takes us on a fascinating tour of courts, libraries, and reading rooms in search of Castiglione's ideal courtier. He shows how changing responses to the Courtier, both positive and negative, reveal changing social values and how regional variations in its reception reflect the emerging cultural map of Europe. His evidence includes printing history, translations, marginalia, and records of sale and possession. He concludes with a discussion of the later fortune of the Courtier. Including its role in the"civilizing process" and its curious appeal to writers as different as Samuel Johnson and W. B. Yeats. Informed by Burke’s considerable knowledge of printing and publishing history, this book contributes to our growing understanding of the history of the book and to our knowledge of the Renaissance and its reception. The"bezel" or center part of this ring is ... morein an elegant diamond shape. The center of this diamond-shaped bezel is a raised, sculpted diamond. So you have a raised diamond center platform atop a diamond shaped bezel…and the raised sculpted diamond shaped center is bordered by a bunch dot diamond-shaped perimeter, and as well contains a punch-dot diamond within the center of the topmost platform. So you have a diamond shaped sculpted raised center platform which both contains a punch dot diamond, and is in turn within an engraved/punch dot diamond, atop a diamond shaped bezel which also is contained within a diamond punch-dot circumferential periphery. It is a handsome design, one quite popular for the era and region. There is some light“all-over” wear evident. But nothing significant enough to merit description. Nonetheless fate has been kind to this ring. The fact that the ring evidences some degree of wear from ancient usage should not, however, be a source of disappointment. You must keep in mind that the ring was produced by an artisan and sold to a patron or consumer with the idea that the ring would be enjoyed and worn by the purchaser. Norton& Company Inc. 1965) ISBN: 0393003221. In this flowing(illustrated) survey of Roman intellectual development during the four centuries from Cicero to Augustine. Professor Starr seeks to define the causes for the decline of classical civilization. At the same time he points out that the Graeco-Roman culture carried unconsciously within it the forces of a new order of life. The sources of this new view, which were largely the same as the causes for the disintegration of classical culture, are here located in major social changes in the position of the individual human being, not in the outward growth of political autocracy or in the ever sharper ... moreclass stratification of the Roman Empire. CONDITION: Unread oversized softcover. W. W. Norton& Company(1965) 413 pages. It's"new" in the sense that it is unread.
