Russian Orthodox Silver Malachite Enamel Religious Panagia Pendant Reliquary
This is a very rare item indeed. Beautiful Russian Orthodox Ecclesiastical 84 Silver Panagia or Reliquary that is made in the form of a stylized cross in a rectangle. Panagia opens on hinges and locks with pin. Perhaps the pin was tied on to the body of Panagia by fine silver chain which unfortunately was lost. So I changed it with a simple white thread. The face of the Panagia is covered with red glass enamel. On the center is mounted hand painted oval enamelled plaque/plate depicting the image of the Virgin Mary. Painted enamel oval is appr. 49 x 40 mm. The four arms of the cross are decorated with beautiful floral appliques of yellow metal. Between the arms of the cross are mounted 4 green malachite stones. On the face of the Panagia have mounted 8 small red stones. The back of the Panagia is hand carved in the shape of Russian Orthodox ... moreCross. Probably sometime in the Panagia was hiding any church relics- relics of a saint. A valuable manuscript, part of the Holy Cross or something. Panagia body is attached to the chain by stylized square element. Decorated with red square enamel. In the center of the coupling square element is mounted green malachite stone. This item binds the chain with the body of Panagia. At the bottom of Panagia is mounted small stylized diamond-shaped pendant, which is decorated with red enamel and malachite stone. The chain has 31 links and is approximately 89-90 cm long(Appr. 35.0"35.3" inches) Enough to be worn around the neck. Each link of the chain is etched, engraved or carved a Russian Orthodox cross on one side, and 84 hallmarkings on the other side. Both opening parts of the Panagia are hallmarked for 84 silver on the inside. Both hooked pendants are hallmarked for 84 silver on the back sides. Each link of the chain is hallmarked. Panagia is 14.7 cm. long excluding chain(appr. 5.78" inches) and 9.5 cm. wide(appr. 3.75" inches) Panagia weighs appr. 255 grams solid silver. It is a superior piece! This auction is for a rare Russian Orthodox icon depicting the Madonna and Child pair. I believe that it is a more modern one. It seems as though only the uncovered areas are painted. I have included pictures of all markings. Paint has a cracked look that could be artificial aging, which was popular as early as the late 1800's from what I understand. I took it to a local expert who said the value was $250-300 as is, more if polished.

TECHNIQUE: Made of bronze and 4 colors enamels SIZE: 3.6 x 2.7 cm ICON' SUBJECT: This composition. Also known as the Sudarium and the Saviour Uncreated-by-human-hands, is inspired by the legend of the miraculous transference of Christ’s countenance onto a piece of cloth which He used to wipe his face. This image, uncreated by human hands, was said to have been sent by Christ himself to Augarus, king of Edessa. In Edessa Augarus attached the cloth to a“board which did not decompose” and placed it in a niche made for it above the gates of the city. For some time the cloth was covered with a tile and the image miraculously imprinted itself on this piece of ceramic as well, so that there were now two images uncreated by human hands– ... moreon cloth and on tile. Legend tells us that these images were brought to Constantinople, and they were reproduced in great numbers in Byzantium and the Slavonic countries. The marginal scenes depict the festivities. The icon painted in the Monastic School style. The figures. Visible through the openings of the riza, painted on the dark-red background.
