TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish King of Egypt. King of Dreams ... moreby Gwendolyn MacEwen. PLEASE NOTE: It is likely that we have additional copies of this book. In both higher(more expensive) and lower(less expensive) grades. It is also likely that we have both paperback and hardcover copies(paperback tending to be less costly) Please write us for further details. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 328 pages. Publisher: Insomniac Press; 2004) MacEwen sets out to write a deeply serious novel that also functions as entertaining historical fiction. The novel's hero is Akhenaton. Pharaoh of Egypt's Eighteenth Dynasty, who was the first ruler to introduce the idea of monotheism. Akhenaton's single-mindedness in his quest for his own brand of reason is a powerfully paradoxical distillation of the artistic temperament: originality, fertility and beauty set against death and despair and an inability to love. Author Gwendolyn MacEwen was born in Toronto in 1941. The author of numerous books of award-winning poetry. Including A Breakfast for Barbarians, The Shadow-Maker and The T.E. Lawrence Poems, she also published novels, plays, travel memoirs and children's books. CONDITION: New oversized softcover. Unblemished except that there is a black remainder mark(a line drawn with a black marker) on the bottom surface of the closed page edges indicating that the book is unsold surplus inventory) The line is not visible of course on individual opened pages. Only to the mass of closed page edges. Pages are pristine; clean, crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, unambiguously unread. ANTIQUE AMERICAN FURNITURE & ANTIQUES -the 1929 GIRL SCOUT EXHIBITION CATALOG
Loan Exhibition of Eighteenth Century and Early Nineteenth Century Furniture& Glass. Portraits by Stuart. Peale and others, for the Benefit of the National Council of Girl Scouts, Inc. Published in New York by the American Art Galleries in 1929. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The importance of the Girl Scouts Loan Exhibition cannot be overstated. Although sometimes it seems it has become something of a cliché. Simply put, it was the most important and richest loan exhibition of American antique furniture and other decorative arts ever staged to be drawn in large part from private collections; although it did not start the popularization of American antiques, it contributed largely to its continued success and gave both scholars and collectors new focus; it brought a large number of prominent dealers and collectors ... moretogether in a way which had not been accomplished since the Hudson-Fulton exhibition of 1909; it provided the first broad popular showing of American Federal-period antiques; finally, it inspired an enthusiasm which gave impetus to new books, catalogs and research. The Girl Scout Exhibition is seen by many as the starting point for all serious modern scholarship in the fields of American decorative arts. The catalog features illustrations of fine furniture. Textiles, glass, ceramics and paintings, drawn from notable collections from across the country. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 8"x11" 926 items, hundreds of black& white illustrations. Book: ANTIQUE SHAKER FURNITURE TOOLS TEXTILE FOLK ART -WHITNEY MUSEUM EXHIBITION
Shaker Design” By June Sprigg. Published in New York by the Whitney Museum of Art in association with the Corcoran Gallery of Art in 1986. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The catalog of an important exhibition. Beautifully photographed. Furniture, baskets, boxes, tools, textiles, metalware and graphics are included. This is a good counterpoint to the Andrews books- Andrews worked in black& white and emphasized the architectural elements and spatial considerations, whereas Sprigg works in color and emphasizes the wonderful warmth and luminosity of the woods and stains. Were the sensuous colors imbued in their creations a product of the Shakers' otherwise unexpressed sensuality which could find no other outlet? A beautiful pictorial survey. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 9"x9" 228 pages, color illustrations, ... moredust jacket. CONDITION NOTES: In fine. Clean condition. Early American Furniture. How to Recognize. Evaluate, Buy, and Care for the Most Beautiful Pieces. By John T. Kirk. Published in New York by Alfred A. Knopf in 1970. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: An essential work. And one of the classic books showing how to analyze and understand a piece of furniture. It is Kirk's gift to be able to see furniture and to communicate his understanding of the form and ornament to others. This introduction remains the best guide to the essential skill of learning to look" Ames& Ward) John T. Kirk is one of the preeminent furniture historians of the 20th century. Winterthur, which holds some of his research papers, notes- John T. Kirk is a noted scholar specializing in American furniture and the Shakers. He was a professor at Boston University for many years, and retired as emeritus professor of art history. The catalog includes 125 examples of high-style furniture, the vast majority from Massachusetts ... moreand Rhode Island, although some superb Philadelphia objects are included. These objects are not included in Richard Randall's 1965 catalog. Karolik's musings, As I Reflect upon the Collection" provide a fascinating look at the mind of an idiosyncratic collector" Ames& Ward. Maxim Karolik(1893-1963) was a Russian opera singer. Immigrant, and art collector and benefactor who cut a swath through the Boston and American collecting scenes. The magnificent bequests of American furniture and paintings he and his wife made to Boston's Museum of Fine Arts earned them a place in the pantheon of Boston's patrons of the arts, and their rediscovery and championing of the works of Fitz Hugh Lane and Martin Johnson Heade, along with 19th century American fine and folk artists earned them a place in American collecting lore. The Karoliks deflected such honors, and in an open letter to the MFA's Director, Maxim Karolik declared"We are not'Patrons of Art' or'Public Benefactors. We refuse to accept these banal labels. Out of print as hardcover. MESDA's website notes- MESDA is the realization of a vision shared by two extraordinary individuals: Frank L. Horton and his mother Theodosia"Theo" L. Taliaferro. Who were pioneering antiques dealers and collectors who dedicated most of their lives to raising awareness of and appreciation for domestic objects made in the South. During the first half of the twentieth century, southern antiques were mostly dismissed by scholars and ignored by collectors. A movement to challenge the existing attitudes began in 1949 ... morewith the first Williamsburg Antiques Forum at Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia, which included a seminal session that called attention to the lack of information about southern craftsmanship. The intense study of specifically southern antiques began with the 1952 Williamsburg Antiques Forum, which coincided with the first definitive exhibition of southern furniture, Furniture of the Old South, 1640- 1820 at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, and culminated with the opening of MESDA in 1965. The results of the museum's efforts to fulfill its mission have extended well beyond the exhibition of the collection to include groundbreaking field research programs, award-winning publications, a respected research center and decorative arts library, and exceptional educational programs such as the Graduate Summer Institute cosponsored by MESDA and the University of Virginia. Including 17th century, Queen Anne, Chippendale, and Federal furniture, and related folk art. Under the guidance of Israel Sack and other leading specialists the Meyer's assembled a spectacular collection of superlative examples of American cabinetmaking, which are amply celebrated in this book. Unsurprisingly, a year after publishing this book about the collection, Sotheby's auctioned off the collection itself. The January 14. 1996 issue of Britain's The Independent reported- The sale next Saturday of the ... morebest collection of American furniture to come on the market for 20 years- the Mr and Mrs Adolf Henry Meyer collection- is a big event. The auction at Sotheby's New York is expected to generate fierce competition between aficionados. Adolf Meyer and his wife Ginger began to collect in the 1950s. They had just moved into a house furnished by Ginger's aunt(in Victorian style) when Ginger stopped off in Birmingham, Michigan, at the antique store of one Jes Pavey, an American furniture enthusiast. He saw some fake antique fire irons in the back of the car and pointed them out. What can I do? asked Mrs Meyer, horrified. Pavey sold her a genuinely old set. Two days later, she rang Pavey and said, Would you hurry over? he recalls. She said: Mr Meyer is here and getting ready to go to the office. Come over and drive in the driveway, so he can't get out. Before Pavey left, he'd been commissioned to redo the house in American style. Meyer told me, When you find something you think fits in this house, we'll discuss it and send you a cheque. He wanted the best. According to the Meyers' grandson, Pavey was 99 per cent responsible for the collection. Adolf Meyer was bor

1880 VICTORIAN SOFA BED BROADSHEET - GRAVES PATENT FURNITURE BOSTON
Graves' Patent Improved Sofa Bed” Boston; Samuel Graves& Son. No date, but around 1880. DISCUSSION: A very pictorially pleasing circular illustrating 10 fancy Victorian"sofa beds" which look like fainting couches) 7 on one side and 3 on the other. Samuel Graves& Son was in business at least as early as 1878, when they were awarded a prize for a sofa bed which"appears to meet the wants of many in the community, and is claimed by the exhibitors as an improvement on an old device" at the 13th Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association Exhibition, and were still listed in Boston Almanac and Business Directory in 1891. Published by the Greenwood Press in 1984. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: An essential reference because it is more or less complete(up to 1984) Although the annotations are brief. Periodical literature is included. The entries are divided into groupings of works about individual craftsmen, works about regional groups of craftsmen, general books, and trade catalogs. The bibliography consists of four main sections, the first of which deals with the life and work of individual furniture makers and designers. The second section focuses on groups of furniture craftsmen. Works of a general nature that contribute to the study of American furniture are found in section three. The fourth section contains furniture trade catalogs published by manufacturers and wholesalers for salesmen and retail stores. A two-part appendix lists furniture trade periodicals published mainly during the years 1880-1930, and manuscript repositories containing materials relevant to furniture.
