The desk features ... morea gorgeous original finish and period hardware. There are four graduated drawers over flared french feet and shaped skirt. The drawer fronts have book-matched crotch mahogany veneers and cockbeading. The fitted interior(sorry for the dust) has burl walnut veneers, ebonized pulls and boxwood stringing. The interior cupboard door opens to reveal a drawer with a secret drawer behind. See photo) The desk measures 44" high by 39 1/2" wide by 20" deep. In overall very good condition. There is some minor loss to the veneer on the feet which we will restore for you. The desk lid is cupped which makes the desk impossible to lock properly though we do have a key. I don't think we want to try to address this particular issue but please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have. There is also some cracking of the veneer on the lid but it is all stable, nothing loose. The desk has great color and patination and is guaranteed to be as described. Hand carved of solid oak and chestnut about 1860, there is a brass gallery and inlaid tray for coins. The cash drawer automatically locks whenever closed, and can only be opened with the key. Inside are cubicles for ledgers. The footrest is well worn. Joints are secured by carved wooden pegs, panels are raised. Drawer interiors and tracks were rebuilt, presumably because they were heavily worn. The old finish is very fine on all four sides. A cylinder or"barrel" shaped roll top desk is solid oak with a pull out writing surface of natural saddle leather. The warm brown finish is in excellent condition. Accenting the hand carved incised designs. Brass pulls and mounts are original on this American made furniture. The roll top is curly elm burl and glides smoothly, inside is a tiny drawer and cubicles for papers. Sides are paneled, the lower door has a raised panel and working lock. Two Antique Side Latches/W Catches European Secretaire Restoration Hardware
I have two side latches. With catches that I took off of a European Secretaire, circa 1790-1810. They are brass and in good working shape. These are as removed, not cleaned or altered in any way. Measurements of latches are 2 3/8 inches long, 1 3/8 inches wide by 3/8 inch thick. The catches measure 1 5/16 inches long, 3/8 inch wide and 1/2 inch thick, including nibs. There is some corrosion on the back that doesn't affect operation in any way. These items are perfect for restoration of period furniture. Description Most beautiful Washington style inlaid satinwood and mahogany partner's desk with a rectangular cross banded surface. The sides of the desk share an identical design. There is a small drawer in the center flanked by three graduated drawers on each side. Each drawer has an individual key(key available) and is fitted with the original brass handles. Tall Antique Victorian Oak Cylinder Desk Carved Secretary Glass Front Shelves
Fantastic Victorian era cylinder top desk. Made from oak with pine secondary woods. Panelled back and sides. The large upper cabinet has flexible. Movable shelves and period glass doors. It rests atop a cylinder or roll top desk area with a small drawer and several pigeon holes. The writing surface is covered in black felt and pulls out to provide a larger area. There is a large overhanging drawer as well as two smaller drawers and a cabinet below, for even more storage. All of the drawers have brass pulls and escutcheons and dovetail joints. The lower area is spoon carved in a charming leaf pattern. This piece most likely dates from the late 1800's. This piece is in good condition. But does have some cosmetic flaws, as is to be expected in a piece of this age. Several of the escutcheons are missing as well as the door pulls on the upper ... morecabinet. The drawer pulls are loose as well and one of the escutcheons looks like it has been reattached. There is a piece of wood missing from the molding below the desk top as well. New lowered reserve- This Secretary Desk was purchased in New York@ the end of the 19th Century and was passed down from my great great Grandmother finally to me. I couldn’t find any specific maker or label anywhere. But I just might not know where to look. It’s in pretty good overall condition considering its age. My Grandmother said it was from 1897( 115 years old) She died in 1982 and I have had it since. There is one portion near the top edge( 3rd from last pic) which must have come off when I moved last year, but it seems nominal and the repair should be straight forward. It comes to us from an 78 year old lady who acquired it from her mothers old barn. The stuff she brought us had been stored and untouched for at least 40 years. It was most likely a one of a kind creation from an Ohio farmer or carpenter. The secretary was rough planed and you can still see the circular saw marks(see pictures) The circular saw was invented in 1830s. So the secretary was made no earlier than 1830. The details on this desk are understated and elegant. The C-roll top is graced with fluted moulding on the sides and opens to reveal the interior compartment. The interior compartment consists of seven storage slots and two small fluted drawers along with two ebonized pen/pencil holders and a green felt writing surface. The base of this wonderful desk consists of five drawers that are adorned with lovely fluted moulding and burl-clad pulls. Outstanding Victorian walnut cylinder desk. This intricately detailed piece has definite Eastlake influences including a decorative grid pattern that borders the panelled sides and back and elaborate scroll decoration below the writing surface. Cylinder top conceals pigeon holes and a pull-out writing surface covered in emerald green felt. Brass hinges. Diamond-shaped escutcheons and rosette-mounted bail handle drawer pulls. One long shallow top drawers as well as three half-size drawers and a generous cabinet space. Dowel construction throughout including the drawers, top and back. The locking mechanisms in the drawers have two patent dates- April, 1875 and August, 1882. No maker's marks. Over all this piece is in very good condition. Especially considering its age. School Masters Desk ca 1865
This rarity was found near Columbus Ohio some 2 decades back and is a desk and book box used by a traveling Schoolmaster during the Civil War era. Many communities could not afford a full time Schoolmaster and contracted with a traveling Schoolmaster for education one or two days a week. This artifact was used by such a Schoolmaster to store education materials and for school room use as he traveled from town to town; it is so sized as to fit under the seat of a buckboard. It probably belongs in a museum. It is country made showing the finest possible craftgsmanship of the era and using Walnut. Oak, and Ash woods. This is a beautiful solid black walnut slant top writing desk. Circa 1810.The figured walnut top is very rich and beautiful with its grain patterns,rich walnut tones and beauty marks. I rescued this diamond in the rough. It had many many coats of white paint hiding this beautiful black walnut wood. I lovingly& meticulously hand restored this desk back to full glory. I restored the finish with many. Many coats of hand rubbed shellac, maintaining the antique warm glow, rubbed to a silky smooth yet allowing the beautiful grain textures to be felt.There was a trim around the back of the top which was missing, I custom made this new back rail trim using reclaimed 200 year old black walnut. The drawer pulls are from a 200 year old dresser and are solid walnut hand carved pulls. The harp shaped end is gorgeous as you can easily see with its ... morecone shaped finial on the end of the hand turned support which joins it to the drawer base.The slant top is fixed in position. There is no lid that lifts up, this was designed as a writing desk, dating back to the quill pen days. There is an age shrinkage split in the top which I chose not to restore. The drawer locks are missing.I restored all the drawers, carefully taking them all apart and regluing them all and now they are rock solid and slide excellently. Full depth drawers with lots of storage.The desk is finished on all sides, allowing it to be placed anywhere in a room. The recessed flat panel sides are a great design. Adding to the beauty. I purposefully left some character marks remain in this desk such as tiny chip of wood,left top edge) pinholes etc, they give this desk awesome character, I was not trying to create a reproduction piece I try and respect the antique with all of its age, history and character. The back of the desk has plain finished panels so that it can be floated in the room. Separates into three parts(desk top and two pedestals) for easy moving.
