Up for auction is a pretty Victorian aesthetic movement print& tint English tile. Maker unknown. This tile is printed in brown with an image covering ... morethe whole tile surface with large flowers and associated foliage. There is a diagonal design depicting abstract floral shapes& leaves with linear borders. The tile has been hand finished in pinks. Greens and yellow. The surface of the tile has a nice glossy finish. Original early century tiles INTRODUCTION Attention the items you are bidding are ORIGINAL ca 1900 tiles. These tiles are part of the vast Victorian style spectrum. Tiles have not relief and have surface printed designs with naturalistic. Geometric images on them, colors are firm and well defined. These tiles are very suitable for a charming home interior decor, casual, romantic feel. English country style emphasizes coziness and our relationship with nature. These are the tiles to choose if you want an air of both distinction but also as fresh as a country cottage done in garden florals. ITEM DESCRIPTION Very attractive tile. Drawn in sepia transfer printed, subtile flowers and thorny tails, a perfect abstraction of a victorian garden. STYLE: Aesthetic(Late Victorian) TECHNIQUE: Manufacture: Dust pressed clay tile using a mould& horsehead ... morepress. Then burned. Decoration: surface printed designs. ORIGIN: England Either George Woolliscroft& Son or T&R Boote. MARKS: Each tile has a characteristic factory background some factories used stamped logos on reverse. DIMENSIONS: 6x6 inches each tile. Thickness of biscuit depends but usually is 0.33 inches aprox. APPROXIMATE DATE: Between 1890 to 1910 ITEM CONDITION This tile is in very fine condition. No flaws or repairs exist. Cement on reverse was carefully removed so minimal traces are remaining. Surface, as you can see, has a firm color and smooth glaze surface. Only minimal scratches and tiny chips may be seen, most of them on edges but that is hidden with grouting when reinstalling. Nothing for a more than 100 year old architectural piece. If you are buying many of them and you want a picture to have a look of the general condition no problem to supply. But image shown is well representative of tiles you will get. English Victorian 6" Transfer Printed Tile, Calla Lily, Bamboo, Aesthetic Period
This is a very striking transfer printed and hand colored 6 inch ceramic tile. Presumably from the Victorian period. I can't figure out the English registry mark on the back, so I'm not sure of its age. It features a central image of calla lillies surrounded by a bamboo framework with other flowers and leaves around the edges. It is about three eighths of an inch thick. The tile is in good condition for its age. There are some fine scratches across the center as shown in the photos. Please contact me with any questions you might have.
BEAUTIFUL BLUE AND WHITE MINTON 8 INCH AESTHETIC MOVEMENT `BAMBOO` TILE
This tile was made by the Minton China Works. Stoke on Trent around 1880. It is 8 inches square and has a blue and white pattern of bamboo stems and leaves.Both front and back of the tile are glazed. The back has the embossed Minton factory marks and a printed blue registration diamond. It is in good condition apart from very slight roughness on edges and a tiny chip on one corner. Interesting Antique Victorian Aesthetic Movement Brown & White Floral Print Tile
Up for auction is an attractive Victorian Aesthetic Movement floral printed brown& white tile. This tile is interesting in that it is an identified Mintons design. However it bears the maker's mark for Lea& Boulton. It is possible that both firm's produced the same design or that Mintons have used blank Lea& Boulton tiles to print their design on. This tile is printed with a lovely design in dark brown depicting a central diamond decorated with an urn filled with swirling flowers and foliage. The remaining tile surface is filled with swirls of flowers and stems against a speckled background surrounded by a simple white border and an external brown border. Victorian arts crafts geometric aesthetic tile Bonhams Beaulah Collection
This 5 ins tile has a delightful geometric pattern of shells and fantasmagorical beasts. It is thicker than some. So I wonder if it was a floor tile. The reverse has squares rather like Minton and Hollins, but there is no maker's name- only a stamped number in a square plate in the centre where only the end is discernable with numbers 26974. There is something outside the square which may be S& G or another number. The tile has one significant chip to the top right hand corner. The back is clean. This tile comes from the G K BEAULAH tiles sale at Bonhams on 25th January 1995. Some items are marked with a complete Bonhams sticker. Some have original Beaulah registrations on the back. Some have both. Sadly. This one has none. I will be selling off all of these tiles over the next few weeks so please check my other lots. This is an interesting 6 inch Victorian aesthetic tile. It contains a wheat sheaf design. The tile is marked H R T Co England and then appears to have a small 3R mark and a 51 marked in the corner. It is in unused condition but has two chips to the bottom corners. This tile comes from the G K BEAULAH tiles sale at Bonhams on 25th January 1995. It has the original sticker for the sale on the front for lot no 212. On the rear. It has the Beaulah catalogue number: 1334. There is also a red sticker on the edge with a number 225. Wedgwood Aesthetic 'The Months' series Tile Trivet, 'May', by Helen Miles, 1878
I have for sale a Wedgewood aesthetic movement tile. Entitled'May' from the Old English The Months series designed in 1878 by Helen J.A. Miles. Mounted in the original cast iron trivet frame. This series of 12 transfer printed tiles represented children in various activities illustrating the individual months of the year. In this case two girls are picking posies of apple blossom from the tree. Transfer printed in underglazed blue. With the title'May' printed in the bottom right corner, the tile measures 15.2 cm(6 inches) square. The back carries the impressed marks"Josiah Wedgewood& Sons, Etruria" with the'E' of Etruria reversed, a backstamp exclusively reserved for Wedgewood's tile production. It also shows two small marks in underglazed blue which may be potters' or decorators' marks. These ... morewedgwood art tiles were sold as sets for domestic use or individually. Mounted in a variety of ways, including this original trivet mounting. It is constructed of a border of fine, rope-twist cast iron which is twisted into knots at each corner, forming four feet which prevent heat being transferred through the tile to the surface below. The tile is in very good condition considering its age and function. There is a small hairline extending about 1.5 inches from the right edge. Some very minor fritting to the outer edges and a small amount of crazing, particularly to the back and to the white area of the seated girl's petticoat. This tile has been used as a trivet, therefore there is some expected rubbing to the glaze in the centre. However, there are no major chips or crack, the decoration is crisp and the colours true. The frame is sound and in good order. Unpacked weight is 495 grams. I would be very happy to provide any further information required regarding this piece. Minton Victorian aesthetic arts and crafts tile Beaulah Collection Bonhams
This tile is marked Mintons China Works Stoke-on-Trent embossed into the back of the tile and then has the Minton monogram- a Circle with Minton in the Middle and I believe Stoke-on-Trent and Walbrook London around the outside. Impressed into the tile. It is in excellent condition and appears unused. Just a couple of edge nibbles. This tile comes from the G K BEAULAH tiles sale at Bonhams on 25th January 1995. Ken Beaulah was author of Church Tiles of the C19th and a founder member of the Tiles and Architectural Ceramic Society. He began collecting whilst still at school in York. Decorated with a Japanese inspired design of fans and a large lotus flower, made circa 1903. The tile measures approximately 6 inches square and has the typical Pilkington back with the registration number‘410774’ for 1903. The photographs show the tile from both sides. The condition is good apart from few minor small chips to the edge and a chip to the back. All my tiles are antique or vintage and not modern reproductions. An absolutely beautiful high glazed architectural element art tile circa 1860. The tile is decorated in the Aesthetic Movement taste- a sepia glaze with day lilies on a ground on bicolored diagonal squares. The 6" square tile is in excellent condition with just some minor losses the the corners and edges. Examples of these wonderfull decorative tiles were among the collections of The Brooklyn Museum and also of Barbra Streisand.
