Up for sale is a very nice Sterling Silver Holy Icon of the Virgin Mary with baby Jesus. It is made out of sterling silver and mounted on come kind of high grade plastic like bakelite. This was hand made in Italy. It is 4-3/4" tall and 3-1/2" wide. The silver mark is a star and then 338 Fl. It also has 925 in an oval and then an R in a square followed by 2+3. But he concealed his origin and led the life of a beggar. He walked through the villages and for free sewed half-coats and other clothes, primarily for the poor. While doing this he deliberately failed to sew something, either a glove, or a scarf, for which he endured abuse from his customers. The ascetic wandered much. But most often he lived at a churchyard of the village of Merkushinsk not far from the city of Verhotursk(on the outskirts of Perm) St Simeon loved nature in the Urals, and while joyfully contemplated its majestic beauty, he would raise up a thoughtful glance towards the Creator of the world. ... moreIn his free time, the saint loved to go fishing in the tranquility of solitude. This reminded him of the disciples of Christ, whose work he continued, guiding the local people in the true Faith. His conversations were a seed of grace, from which gradually grew the abundant fruits of the Spirit in the Urals and in Siberia, where the saint is especially revered. St Simeon of Verhotursk reposed in the Lord in 1642. When he was 35 years of age. He was buried in the Merkushinsk graveyard by the church of the Archangel Michael. On September 12. 1704, with the blessing of Metropolitan Philotheus of Tobolsk, the holy relics of St Simeon were transferred from the church of the Archangel Michael to the Verhotursk monastery in the name of St Nicholas. His small right hand rests under her chin and left arm reaches to embrace her. Both Mary and Jesus are adorned with resembling crowns with two cherubs holding onto Mary's crown while floating over top. Mary is in her classic Blue Azurite Mantle(robe) that famous color of blue originating from the Byzantine time symbolizing purity. 1856 Ornate 84 Silver Russian Icon Christ the King Kovalsky Assayer Gold Finish
This is a beautifully ornate antique Russian icon of Christ the King holding the orb and cross. The riza is marked with the Assayer's mark of A.K over 1856 and 84 plus what looks like the city of Moscow's mark. The assayer is Andrey Antonovich Kovalsky of Moscow. It is marked both on the lower front and also on the halo which is raised from the rest of the riza. The city mark is difficult to make out. But we think it is Moscow. See Photos# 1 and 2. There is also the maker's mark which we have not been able to interpret but it looks like it is Cyrillic and is a B and what looks like an upside down U. There appears to be a gold plating over the silver. We have rubbed off a little of the decades of dirt and tarnish to reveal what looks like a gold plating. The icon measures 7" x 9" and has a dark tan velvet covering the ... moreback. The face and hands of Christ reveal the oil painting. The ornate halo is loose on the right side but firmly attached to the top and left side. We have not cleaned this piece which shows the patina and age of almost 160 years. Antique Russian Icon Oklad Riza Madonna of Joy of All Who Sorrow with Coins
For sale is an antique or vintage Russian Icon. The Madonna of Joy of All Who Sorrow with Coins. I'm not sure exactly when it was made, but I would guess sometime in the earlier part of the 20th C or century, although it could be earlier. The icon has been constructed from a wood base that has been painted. With a sheet of repoussed and chased metal on top, called a riza or oklad. Cutouts in the metal expose the faces of the Madonna and worshippers. I have not removed the metal to see whether the painting has been fully executed, or whether just the faces are painted on the wood underneath the metal overlay. The metal appears to have been plated and gilded, with expected wear. The dimensions are 5.5" high and 4.5" wide. I am happy to answer questions or send additional photos. ANTIQUE WALL ICON RELIC WITH CANDLE MOUNT- EXTREMELY RARE 18th C. This is a Christian Orthodox Icon Relic from St. Ivan Rilski monastery. The biggest and one of the oldest monasteries in Bulgaria. The monastery was built from 927 to 941 by Ivan Rilski in Rila Mountain. The Icon placed in primitive metal frame and has a holder for burning a candle. It is protected with glass. Back side the image is protected by a sheet of paper. Measures approx. 13" tall x 6" wide x 3 1/2" deep. The framed Relic measures 4 1/2" tall x 3 3/4" wide.
