Everyone of these type of desks are normally ball and claw foot. Either just in the front or both. This one comes with a bracket foot base and has the period look, just like the country Chippendale ones would. I personally love it so much better than the other style. This desk has been completely and I don't mean half assed or took short cuts here and there, but it has been completely taken apart stripped, sanded, stained all by hand. Then came the talented hand rubbed lacquers that was applied in five to six coats. So, for the next 100 years you will have one carefree gorgeous investment minded antique. Do not gets this confused with those guys out there that just polish or clean up these desk, because we have even completely done the interior which is normally skipped over by others because it is a hard thing to do. It has all the original brass Chippendale hardware on the front. As you open up the breadboard writing surface, automatic extensions come out to support the writing lid and it also exposes a wonderful multi-cubby hole drawer interior with a carved door storage area and two cleverly designed units behind multi turn spindle posts. When I was a kid, my dad always used to hide things in those drawers and it took us years to figure out where he put them. This desk was made by Maddox out of Buffalo, NY that was well known for their high quality and stylish goods. It is simply stunning and is all set to go into the home. Made from mahogany and walnut. The secretary is solid and strong with no loose joints. Sits on large ball and claw feet, 3 bottom serpentine drawers with decorative brass pull handles, drop front desk with six pigeon holes and a small drawer and storage above the small drawer. Hutch has two doors with glass and decorative detail and 2 shelves. There is no breaks, chips or cracks to the glass. Comes with the original key to lock the top and bottom. This is a one piece secretary and measures 78" tall counting the finale, 30 1/2" wide and 17" deep. There is some lacquer loss on the finial and a small amount on the doors. Overall great condition. Only part of the paper tag is on the back so maker is unknown. As with all antiques including vintage or used items expect to find some signs of wear, use, nicks, rubs or scratches and age wear to finish that is common to all antiques due to age and use. You will need to make your own shipping arrangements with a shipper of your choice or(PICK UP IS ALWAYS WELCOME. Additional storage is found below the desk area consisting of an area with a ornate door measuring 20" x 14 1\2" deep. The drawer below this storage area measures 2" x 14 1\2" deep x 5" High. To the left of the desk is a tall shelf area with four adjustable shelves for storage or acting as a bookcase again having fine ornate wood carving over the glass door front. The ornate carvings on the front of the fold-down desk and upper glass door appear Victorian. Work is needed for refinishing this piece to bring it back to its original ... morebeauty. Secretary desk with fold down writing surface and glass front upper bookshelf
Selling my childhood secretary desk that my parents purchased at an antique store in Vermont back in the 1980's. I am not sure of the purchase price. The age, or the wood type. The stain is a chestnut color. The desk are two parts. The approximate dimensions of the lower secretary desk part are 36 inches tall, 34.5 inches wide, 19 inches deep. The approximate dimensions of the upper bookshelf part are 33 inches tall. 32 inches wide at the bottom(where it rest on the secretary desk) and 36.5 inches tall(from the top moulding trim) 11.5 inches deep. The drawers have dovetail construction and all four drawers open and close fully. The handles. Hinges, and hardware appear to be brass(not positive of the material) One of the eight handles came out of the hinge socket. I have the handle loose so it can be reattached and repaired. The bookshelf ... moreunit has a glass front. The glass is in good shape with some sticker residue which needs to be cleaned. The very top of the bookshelf has a circular mark which appears to be where the previous owner(s) kept a plant. On the fold down writing desk there is a small chip in the wood on the left hand corner. There are four holes on top of the secretary desk where the bookcase is attached also there are scratches and wear from the bookcase rests(these are not visible when the desk is attached) The back has rough unfinished wood showing. The fold down writing surface is fully functional. It folds down and rests on the upper drawer which pulls out. Feel free to ask any questions if you need further description or clarification. When I saved old ink wells and antique books it was set up as a victorian desk and bookcase complete with inkwell and quill pen. When I wanted to use it(as it is shown) to display my green depression glass, the glass shelves displayed that beautifully. It is a solid oak piece with all the original hardware and original beveled mirror. We did add the glass shelves. They were missing when we purchased this piece many years ago. It has a drop leave desk that hides all the little cubbies and small drawer. There is a storage closet and a larger drawer under the drop leave desk. We have the original key and it still works.
