Antique Douglass Clay Products Co Anomaly 1 Gallon Water Jug-Rare
This is an antique Douglass Clay Product Co 1 gallon water jug. The Douglass Clay Product Co in Los Angeles. CA operated from 1903-1910 when it was bought out by another company, but they continued to make vessels after this time, but apparently under that company's name. The clay products in the LA area were so good due to the exceptionally fine clay found in Southern California. This one has a logo for Douglass that we have not seen anywhere else. The jug also has anomalies that occurred in the manufacturing of the jug, making it doubly unique. There is a small hole in side of jug that someone tried to tape over. I have not removed this tape. There is a chip on top rim, several small chips in bottom edge, few chips on bottom and some coloring is coming off the top rim. The handle has a few small chips. Where it had been safely stored for many a year. Once, I got the dirt off it. You could see the beauty of the green glaze underneath, which is in suprisingly good condition. There are a couple of tiny chips but nothing more. Which is unusual for an item like this, which dates to the late part of the 19th or very early part of the 20th century. It stands 10" tall and is 11" wide from the edge of the handle to the tip of the spout. The base diameter is 5" and it weighs a heavy 3.050kgs. Antique Handmade East Indian Malasa Water Jug Very Unique And Rare
For sale is an antique handmade water jug. In excellent condition. There is a stamp on the top handle that reads"Malasa" which is an area in India. This very unique East Indian piece has a spout, a raise up hole for ventilation and a big circular handle at the top, presumably for inserting a pole for easy carrying. Jug is approximately 13" tall by 8.5" wide. There is a mark on the vase that reads"Ming, which was probably put on there afterwards, looks to be written in pencil. Antique Rare Two Handled Salt Glazed Water Jug Circa 1800's
Very Rare 1800's Two Handled Salt Glazed Water Jug It stands 9" tall and 6.5" wide. From handle to handle. Around the middle(belly) it measures 18" The clay looks like the clay that was used on the eastern coast in the 1800's. The clay on the east coast is much lighter clay then other parts of the US. The jug is hand thrown piece. They would have put this on a pottery wheel then turned it to produce this look, and instead of cutting the part off that help support it on the wheel, they left it there, finished it off used it as a foot. I am not quite sure the purpose of that, it seems to me a smoother bottom would have been easier, unless they had fashioned a carrier that the bottle sat down in that size. Jug has two small hair line cracks on the mouth of the jug look closely at the picture, Jug those have crazing all over it, that definitely comes with age. This is an antique water jug/ botijo/ gargoulette. A traditional water container that can be found all over Spain and in parts of southern France. It is designed to maintain a cool water temperature, even when placed in the sun. This item is depicts a country house on one side and a dog on the other, with trees in between. The colors are browns, yellow, greens and white with black for lines and a touch of blue. This item shows signs of being an antique, and I estimate it is from the first half of the 20th century. The bottom is stamped handmade in Spain, so we know it is likely post 1891. Approx 9.5" tall and 8.25" at the widest.

USSERY Water Valley Mississippi.This unique pottery jug still has the original piece of corn cob that was used as stopper for it and was found in an old barn just outside of Oxford back a few years ago.It will measure approximately 10 1/2 Inches tall and is still in pretty good condition it was covered in so many dirt dabbers nest when found that couldn't even see the handle of it.The name on it has worn off a good bit but you can still make out most of it. Logan(1907:176) notes that in the northwest part of Calhoun County. Along the Pittsboro-Trusty-Water Valley road, there were outcrops of white Wilcox clay, and that they were used at one time in a small hand stoneware pottery on the Ersery plantation(Logan 1909:176) Following up on this indication of economically important stoneware clay in Calhoun County, Lusk(1961:62) notes that in the late 1880s B. F. Ussery operated a small hand pottery in northwestern Calhoun County where he made stoneware pitchers, jars, churns, jugs and crude tableware from the undifferentiated upper part of the Wilcox formation, where exposures of clay are generally silty or sandy, thin and infrequent. The"last" site of Ussery's pottery was believed to be on the north side of the old Branner to Water Valley Road near Union Grove Church. England c.1880 This transfer printed toy cream pitcher or milk jug circa 1880 was originally part of an early child's or doll house play tea set. The color is sepia or chocolate brown against a creamy white earthenware. The pear shaped pitcher stands about 3 5/8" tall with a scalloped rim and applied handle. It features a water hen or Guinea Hen(the English name for the American Coot) feeding in a lily pond with cat tails and reeds. The background is an aesthetic composition of lush flowers. Swallows, and an inset of a castle. There is a zig zag patterned trim along the rim. This miniature pitcher or milk jug was made by and is marked on the bottom; Georgia Art. I think it would have the word pottery on it. If there was room, but this is just a guess. The glaze on this piece is a shiny dark brown. The handle is nicely applied to the body of the jug. This small piece is just over 2 inches high. I do not know when this piece was made, I have had it for 15 or 20 years. I buy many items from estates, so it could be quite old. I would guess that it is from the mid 1900's. No chips or cracks. The jug is in excellent overall condition with no cracks. Scratches, scuffs or repairs. The handle, short pouring spout, rim and internal strainer are undamaged. There is an area of underglaze paint splash on one of the upper inside side walls(see ... morephoto 6) There is a small area of crazing and minor stain on the inner base of the pot(see photo 3) The underside base of the jug is clearly marked with the original Ringtons Tea Merchants base stamp and Regd No 740055. The fitted lid has a moulded breather hole(see photo 11 and 12) very small surface flake chip on the underside of the overhanging apron(see left hand corner photo 11) is marked on the underside with the Rington's Tea insignia inside a decorated shield, and is otherwise undamaged. The lid seats itself nicely into the wide flat rim of the jug body. Jug dimensions are: height 15.5cm(without lid) and 19cm(with lid fitted) width 20cm(spout to handle) and 16cm(diagonal side to side at widest point near base) Unpacked weight is 840g. This is an opportunity to secure an item that is infrequently seen and which is likely to appreciate in value in coming years. Color is a dark rich brown as you will see best in the photos of the bottom which we took to show the clay type. There are a few tiny chips around the bottom edge so you can see this is a redware type clay. We thought it was a Spanish water jug. But we have found nothing similar. Especially when it comes to this glaze. Which more closely resembles old Maryland redware brown splatter glaze. If you put a light into the larger hole. You will see it is only partially open. About half. Seems to be the way this jug was constructed. Edge flake on the smaller spout. There was a second pouring of glaze over a first. This is a fine antique 5 gallon stoneware jug. It has great blue lettering: Allison's Wells Mineral water Way. Miss. D.C. Latimer& Co. Proprietors" It also has a nice stylized blue"5" at the top. There are a couple of chips on the lip of the spout. The bottom is in good shape with normal ware and chips. This jug dates from the early 1900's. Allison Wells in Way Mississippi was about 10 miles north of Canton Mississippi. The mineral water was shipped by rail to customers all over the U.S. There was a hotel. spa and art colony at various times. People came from all over the mid south for the spa. It continued to be the place to be during the 20's and 30's. This is a rare piece of stoneware.

Primitive Antique Hand Turned Gray & Blue Glaze Stoneware Crock Water-Wine Jug
Here is a Primitive Antique Hand Turned Gray with Blue Glaze Stoneware Crock Water/ Wine Jug. Its unique urn shape and design gives it an almost a Persian look. It measures 9" tall x 7" in diameter at the top and 4 1/2" diameter base. It is stamped at the side of the base with a backwards"E" It has several curved kiln marks on the bottom. It is in wonderful condition with no cracks or chip marks. It does have one very small cut roll mark on the outer rim. The the cut roll mark does not affect the structure of the jug. Antique Stoneware Jug - German - Gin or Mineral Water Jug - ca. 1870's
Up for auction is this old stoneware jug used to transport gin or mineral water. This piece is from Frankfurt. Germany and from the inscription was probably used to transport mineral water. It is in pretty good condition considering its age. There are some chips around the rim but the body of the jug is well preserved. The inscription reads"J. Friedrich- Grosskarben- B/Frandfurt- M" It has an inscription in the circle which reads" Taunus Brunnen-By Appointment" It measures about 11 1/2" tall and 3 1/4" wide.
