Condition: Overall good with a horizontal crack that encircles all but 3" of crock~but it has not broken thru. Also. This a little brown jug from the Ozarks. Pottery or stoneware. It is old but I don't know how old. 7.5" tall x 5" across bottom. Weight is approx. 3 pounds. Someone has painted this, perhaps in an attempt to make it look like Ozark Roadside Pottery. I tested a little spot and the paint would be easily removed with mineral spirits or something similar. Antique Vintage Late 1800's Beehive 1 Gallon Stoneware jug with Bail Handle
This auction is from our family estate sale and was handmade and fired in the late 1800's- 1900. It is still very solid and intact. And holds one gallon of water that has been physically measured. As evident in the pictures, it has a beautiful spider webbed glazing and beige patina that has came naturally with age. It's approximately 9 1/2 inches tall and the base measures about 6 inches. The total circumference around the jug at the widest point below the shoulders is 23 1/2 inches. It's VERY heavy for its size weighing 3lbs 15.6oz empty. It has a very slight, minor chip on the back of the neck which is hard to see as it occurred quite some time ago and has darkened with age. A picture of it is included. It has a wooden stopper which has a small, plugged-hole drilled through from top to bottom. I assumed because of this that ... morewine was made in this jug at some stage in its long life. The glaze on this jug may be a special feldspathic glaze that is clear. Strong and exhibits no crazing or puddling. It forms the perfect surface for adding all of the hand painted decoration that include colored slips for added the flowers and leaves. The yellow fringed and purple fringed large white flowers seem unique for the period in that they stand proud in relief as a result of the special slips used. One can feel the flower petals with your finger due to the physical properties of the thick white slip used to form them. The burnished gold luster is also tastefully restrained. It is restricted to simple accents along the handle or on the leaves and flowers. Antique LITTLE BROWN JUG- Glazed Stoneware/Ceramic- Moonshine/Whiskey Jug- Spout& Applied Handle. This"little brown jug" measures about 7-3/4" to the top of the handle; 5-5/8" base diameter; 6-1/4" at widest part. There are no markings as to manufacturer. Location, or date. The spout has a cork in it. The jug has an applied handle. There is a chip at the base(about 3/4" x 1/4" below the spout. There are a few rough spots in the ceramic. The brown color has lighter areas under the glaze(see last photo) The jug has nice balance when holding by the handle.
