Antique Stoneware: Rare L. Kendall Ovoid Jug w/ Cobalt, Chelsea, MA, ca.1840, NR
An uncommon 2Gal. Ovoid Jug from Massachusetts. Ca.1840's. This bears The cobalt-washed stamp of Loammi Kendall, who started a small stoneware manufactory around 1836 in Chelsea, just north of Boston. His production numbers were relatively small and his name is rarely mentioned in discussions of early New England potters(L. Watkins, pp.45-46) This appears to be one of Kendall's earlier Ovoids. The form is not perfect, and the top indented- most likely bottom-stacked in the kiln. The upper and lower handle terminals are primitively brushed with vibrant Cobalt, and there is a wonderful hand-carved stopper that sits perfectly in the spout. This piece has typical manufacturing imperfections(clay scars, stack marks, inclusions, etc. but no post-production flaws! Please see photos for further description and details. WILLIAM RIDGWAY& CO YELLOW WARE HOUND HANDLE JUG YELLOWARE SIGNED, A rare yellow ware hound handle relief molded hunt jug with mastiffs at the kill of a wild boar on one side and a male Lion attacking a stag on the other. Signed with a rare partial pad mark on the base. England. William Ridgway& Co. Staffordshire ca 1830-1854 This is an early Staffordshire relief molded hunt jug with a yelloware body. This is a rare example in that it is marked with an applied pad mark on the base. The padmark has partially broken off. And it took me a while to figure whose mark it was. I found the mark in"English China and its Marks" by Thomas H. Ormsbee. The mark is in an octagon frame with an anchor and urn. It has W R& Co in a banner below the anchor. The jug is also marked with an impressed asterisk or flower and the ... morenumber 9. The jug measures 6 1/8" high at the tip of the spout and 7" at the top of the hound handle. It is 4 1/2" across the base. The exterior has a matte satiny sheen. While the inside has a clear shiny glaze. The relief decoration is crisp and spectacular. Condition The hound handle has been repaired at the top where the paws meet the rim and near the bottom terminal at the haunches and tail. These repairs must have been done by an amateur. And they could definitely be improved by a professional restorer. Guaranteed authentic, this is truly a rare Ridgway jug and it will enhance any collection of yellowware, or hunt jugs. This is a RARE beautiful antique stoneware jug! It is gray with a blue raised design all over it. It has two different crests on the bottom and top and there is a very scary face right next to the pour spout. I could not find another like it online or at antique dealers. Years ago when I had an antique dealer look at it she said it was made in the early 1900's. She said it was made to hold alcohol(Wine) or water. She estimated a $400 value. since then I have not found one like it. It is quite heavy around 8lbs. Stands 18" tall and is 10 1/2" at its widest point. There are no markings on the bottom except for the#78. If anyone has any info at all on this jug I would appreciate it. Antique Douglass Clay Products Co Anomaly 1 Gallon Water Jug-Rare
This is an antique Douglass Clay Product Co 1 gallon water jug. The Douglass Clay Product Co in Los Angeles. CA operated from 1903-1910 when it was bought out by another company, but they continued to make vessels after this time, but apparently under that company's name. The clay products in the LA area were so good due to the exceptionally fine clay found in Southern California. This one has a logo for Douglass that we have not seen anywhere else. The jug also has anomalies that occurred in the manufacturing of the jug, making it doubly unique. There is a small hole in side of jug that someone tried to tape over. I have not removed this tape. There is a chip on top rim, several small chips in bottom edge, few chips on bottom and some coloring is coming off the top rim. The handle has a few small chips. This listing is for: a salt glaze jug manufactured by the Macomb Pottery Company of Macomb. Ill. They were in business from 1882-1941 so this is a very old piece. This jug is in fair condition. It's quite worn and shows it's age. There are many scrat ches. Chips and some areas where the glaze has come off and is missing(created small holes in the top glaze) The bottom has quite a lot of scratches and chipping. The name is very difficult to read but visible in the right li ghting. There is a crack going up the side of the ju g but doesn't affect it's structure. Antique Handmade East Indian Malasa Water Jug Very Unique And Rare
For sale is an antique handmade water jug. In excellent condition. There is a stamp on the top handle that reads"Malasa" which is an area in India. This very unique East Indian piece has a spout, a raise up hole for ventilation and a big circular handle at the top, presumably for inserting a pole for easy carrying. Jug is approximately 13" tall by 8.5" wide. There is a mark on the vase that reads"Ming, which was probably put on there afterwards, looks to be written in pencil. Antique Rare Two Handled Salt Glazed Water Jug Circa 1800's
Very Rare 1800's Two Handled Salt Glazed Water Jug It stands 9" tall and 6.5" wide. From handle to handle. Around the middle(belly) it measures 18" The clay looks like the clay that was used on the eastern coast in the 1800's. The clay on the east coast is much lighter clay then other parts of the US. The jug is hand thrown piece. They would have put this on a pottery wheel then turned it to produce this look, and instead of cutting the part off that help support it on the wheel, they left it there, finished it off used it as a foot. I am not quite sure the purpose of that, it seems to me a smoother bottom would have been easier, unless they had fashioned a carrier that the bottle sat down in that size. We are very proud to present this spectacular 1820s to 1840s original English yellow ware richly enameled and glazed rear handle matron with both hands in her pockets Toby jug. We have looked& looked. But cannot find an exact match after over 1,000 images studied! We do know that the facial characteristics and flat eccentric hand finished base, as well as the period Rockingham deep brown style glaze, all indicate the pre to early Victorian period. Another dating fact is that the early 1780s to ca. 1800 examples in Cream, Pearl& Prattware(William Pratt) plus pieces by such English giants as Ralph& Enoch Wood, Thomas Hollins, as well as the famed potters Astbury, and Wheildon, working primarily in Staffordshire& Leeds, virtually all produced Tobys ... morewith square or rectangular base plinths. Our Rare Toby is obviously a flush bottom, but definitely predates the English renaissance of precise enamel decoration, beginning in the late 1840s. Later producers of Tobys such as Davenport, and of course Doulton, showcase much finer painted definition and mold characteristics, traditionally found on 1870s + examples. We are very grateful to the American Toby Jug Museum, for its fine concise history below. Toby Jugs have been around since the early 18th century. The creator of the first Toby Jug is unknown, but most attribute it to either John Astbury or Thomas Wheildon. While the origin of its moniker is unclear, it is widely believed it was named after Toby Fillpot, an infamous sot in a song called â¿The Brown Jugâ¿ that was popular in England in the late 1700s and illustrated with a mezzotint of a fat toper with a jug in hand and the verse beneath. It does hae a few chips at the mouth of the jug. on the back base& bottom pictured. And, the paint on the flower is crackling and delicate(must be handled with care) also pictured. Rare ENGLISH LEEDS TYPE POLYCHROME CREAMWARE JUG. C. 1780-1800 Fine Design- Some Old Restoration This is a rare antique English Leeds type polychrome decorated creamware jug. Circa 1780 to 1800, or so. Jug is 7 5/8" high with a 5 1/8" diameter base, and it has finely painted decoration in green, blue, yellow, pumpkin orange, and brown, as pictured. It is clean and intact, but it does show some old restoration with most of the white painted overspray having turned slightly yellow. Almost all of the overspray restoration paint appears to be on the bottom and inside of the jug with only a few small spots of repair on one side of the body and a couple small spout chips. I see no cracks in the pottery at all, and the handle is unrestored. In general, it looks to be in pretty good condition, and a redo of the restoration could improve ... moreit to near perfect looking. This is fresh from a western Pennsylvania estate. England and is one of the most desirable examples due to it great color and the"baby" toby being held by the large toby. I purchased this from Sotheby's over 25 years ago when in the company of Dr. Wynn Sayman of Richmond, MA, one of the country's top ceramics experts, from whom I purchased some Whieldon over the years. Anyway, this Toby Jug is an outstanding example of the genre, having brilliant"Pratt" colors and great modeling. Of course, I love the"baby" Toby. The jug is in generally great condition, with the only issues several hairlines as shown in the photos- there is a line ... morefrom the elbow on the left side down to the base, another line joins it halfway, there is a line around the outside of the base, and a shallow chip on the bottom- all as shown, The finger on the right hand has a rub. But given the age, this example is in excellent condition. It is about 10" high. There is what appears to be a crown mark on the bottom. I have seen similar examples of this type sold for well over $2,000, with one of the same size sold by Christies realizing $3327 on 11/21/2002. It was hand thrown and glazed in a chocolate brown. There are no maker’s marks but has the characteristics of an early primitive glazed piece. It was purchased at the Brimfield Antique Market many years ago. The piece has a tight 7/8” line on the lip. A 3/16” chip to the base along with typical flakes and firing pops. Up for bid is a very old salt glaze jug.This jug is in remarkable condition considering it's age.Alot of people like to collect the old redwing salt glaze or the primitive salt glaze jugs.But the old utilitarian ones have a much better history.this jug is that jug.This jug was unearthed at a local strip mining job sight.The young man running the machine after moving tons of dirt noticed a wooden shed buried beneath him,he carefully removed the dirt and inside this underground wooden shed where these salt glaze jugs,he told the others on the job site of his find some where still in tact,and I was given 2,now the law requires that they call someone in the case where they unearth any type of historical items,but this shuts down there job,they didn't want there job shut down and have to miss any work so they salvaged the good ones and ... morekept on working.The guys had no idea what the shed full of jugs was used for some thought a water shed for underground miners this area was common for coal mines.Others thought maybe moonshine jugs hidden from the law.I don't suppose we will ever know if they where for water or whiskey jugs,they are very primitive jugs.They would fit into many decors country primitive even equestrian,it is in good condition no cracks.I f you have any questions please email me and thanks for the look.I will be listing the other one as well.

This listing is for a Peter WElty& Co Monticello Rye 1881 Stoneware Jug. The jug has in gold leaf script the name of the company P. Welty& Co in script. Then 1881 in gold. Then Monticello Rye in gold with a floral pattern under it. The bottle has no chips, no crack and no repairs. The lip is not chipped or cracked as you usually find with stoneware items. SUPER RARE* Cleaning out my parents basement because they are moving to Florida(Yes. They are old.haha) and i found this Bottle in a box along with another JUG that is also up for sale now! When i asked my parents about it. They said they have had it for around 50 years, maybe longer. They don't remember where they got it from! I have not seen anything close to this on Ebay. On the Jug it is printed"MERCURY" in Blue. On the bottom has a 10 embossed. This may indicate a 10-lb. weight when filled. No cork with this little Jug/Bottle. Color is Tan and dark Brown. Rare Antique Mid-19thC STICK SPATTER WARE PITCHER Jug Pearlware
I am listing a variety of nice Antique and Vintage Items this week. Here is an ANTIQUE 19THC STICK SPATTER WARE PITCHER OR JUG. Looks to be c.1850's vintage or thereabouts. Has a bluish pearlware type glaze in the crevices. Pitcher is 4-7/16" tall. There is a chipped area on the rim at the handle side. Another smaller chip to the bottom footrim. There is crazing in the glaze with some staining in the craze in the lower half. Unusual and charming piece of early stick spatterware. INSURANCE INCLUDED in the shipping total.
