The Saint Demetrius on this icon depicted in iconography stile from 10th century, type as Infantry Soldier armored with spear and sword and dress with blue armor with lion head on arm. Beautiful figure of the St. Demetrius in gold ornaments around real masterpiece. Tempera paint on levkas(gesso) with gold floral vignettes engraved and embossed. The icon can easily be dated no earlier than the later years of the 19th century. This listing is for 1 egg shaped religious icon or tryptich. I believe the item is made of wood. But am not positive. It is heavily lacquered. The icon measures about 7-1/4" tall and 5" wide when closed. The piece measures about 10-1/2" wide when fully opened. The item is in very good to excellent pre-owned condition. There are a few minor surface scuffs. The decoration is bright and intact. There are no chips, cracks or breaks. The hinges are a little loose, but they could be tightened. There is no manufacturer's mark. The item is beautifully decorated. I do not know if the religious scenes are painted or applied decals. I wish I knew more about the item, but since it was purchased at an Estate Sale I am at a loss. The icon is substantial and weighs over 1-1/2 pounds. RARE Russian orthodox Christian Icon Madonna and Child, Oklad from late 1800's
This auction is for a rare Russian Orthodox icon depicting the Madonna and Child pair. I believe that it is a more modern one. It seems as though only the uncovered areas are painted. I have included pictures of all markings. Paint has a cracked look that could be artificial aging, which was popular as early as the late 1800's from what I understand. I took it to a local expert who said the value was $250-300 as is, more if polished.
