Also known as the Sudarium and the Saviour Uncreated-by-human-hands, is inspired by the legend of the miraculous transference of Christ’s countenance onto a piece of cloth which He used to wipe his face. This image, uncreated by human hands, was said to have been sent by Christ himself to Augarus, king of Edessa. In Edessa Augarus attached the cloth to a“board which did not decompose” and placed it in a niche made for it above the gates of the city. For some time the cloth was covered with a tile and the image miraculously imprinted itself on this piece of ceramic as well, so that there were now two images uncreated by human hands– ... moreon cloth and on tile. Legend tells us that these images were brought to Constantinople, and they were reproduced in great numbers in Byzantium and the Slavonic countries. STUNNING.that's all I can say about this RARE. VINTAGE, ANTIQUE, BRASS, RUSSIAN ORTHODOX RELIGIOUS ICON PLAQUE. According to an old sticker on the back of this item, it's titled ELIJAH. Pretty sure it's made of BRASS(could be wrong) but feel free to do your own investigating. This item is in great shape, and looks better in person than the photos portray. FANTASTIC detail and relief, and the artistry is incredible. The more you look, the more you see! As eluded to earlier, back of item has a current, removable sticker, and also remnants of two smaller stickers. Also has a loop for hanging, if desired. ITEM HAS NOT BEEN CLEANED. Not even going to try it because the present patina is wonderful. There appears to be some kind of possible hallmark under the sticker, but I just can't see enough of it to give any details. Known as the Odigitry icon(Greek for guide) This icon depicts the Virgin in half- length with the blessing God- Child. In Byzantium, this iconograpfy was related to the Vlakherin icon of the Virgin. In Russia, the icon was named after Kazan, the place of a miraculous occurrence on July 8, 1579. Prince Dmitry Pozharsky freed Moscow from the Poles with the Kazan icon of the Virgin on October 22, 1612. The church celebration of the icon occurs on these days. RARE RUSSIAN 19th CENTURY ST.NIL CARVED WOOD STATUE. Height 8.5" Very good condition. Saint Nil was tonsured a monk in 1505 at St. Sabbas of Krypetsk Monastery near Pskov. After 10 years. He left the monastery for solitude outside of the city of Ostashkova by the Seremi River. He did battle with the demons and prevailed through prayer and asceticism. Many from that region started to come to him for advice and instruction. He asked God to lead him to a quieter place where he would not be constantly interrupted in his prayers. He heard a voice telling him to go to Stolobnoye Island in Lake Seliger. He moved there in 1528 and dug out a small cave in the hill on the middle of the island. Later, he built a hut. He continued to do battle with the devil and his demons. This led them to prompt someone to set fire to the dense woods on the island, ... morebut the flames went out miraculously when they reached the saint's hill. Once, a band of robbers came to the island. Nil told them, All my treasure is in the corner of the cell. They went to search there for money, but all that was there was an icon of the Theotokos. They became blind, and begged for forgiveness with tears of repentance. St. Nil ministered to them. At the proper time, St. Nil was told to prepare for his death. He dug a grave. An igumen from a nearby monastery visited him to bring him the Eucharist. St. Nil communed, censed the icons in his cell and prayed, then surrendered his soul to the Lord on December 7, 1554. A monastery was established on the island, named for St. Nil. It had a wooden church built over the grave of the saint. In 1667, it was decided to tear down the wooden church and replace it with one out of stone. On May 27, they were digging for the foundation, and the earth gave way to reveal St. Nil's uncorrupt remains. They were translated to the church of the Theotokos of the Sign in Ostashkova. Rare 1800s Russian Icon Frame of 22K Gold and Hand Carved
This outstanding frame in quality and detail was originally intended for a Russian icon in the center area of the frame. Recently. There was a Chinese roof tile figure that was displayed in this area. This rare 1800s frame could be used to display a variety of items(use your imagination) The exterior dimensions are roughly 30 inches by 35 inches with the depth of the stained exterior box(with the glass door that opens) is 6.25 inches. The innermost area that is available to display an item(s) is roughly 13.5 inches by 11.5 inches. It was purchased about 15 years ago at the Miami Beach Antique Show from a specialty Russian antique dealer for $4,000 and then it was professionally restored to its current condition. RARE 19c RUSSIAN ICON RESSURECTION of CHRIST OUR LORD Russian Orthodox Icon"Ressurection" Russia. Icon painted in 19th century. Wood, tempera, size 35 x 30,5 cm(14" x 12" x 1" Christian iconography knows several representations of the Resurrection of Christ. Even in very early days. There appears the historical representation of the Resurrection of Christ, based on the Gospel story- the appearance of the Angel to the women bringing spices to the sepulchre. The iconographic type concerning the Resurrection of Christ that comes next in time is the Descent into Hell. The earliest known representation of this, belongs to the VIth century, and is to be found on one of the ciborium columns of Saint Mark’s in Venice. These two later compositions are used in the Orthodox Church as the Easter Icons. The descent into hell was ... morethe last step made by Christ on the way of His abasement. By the very fact of“descending into the abyss of the carth” He opened to us the access to heaven. Therefore, although this Icon expresses the meaning of the event commemorated on Great Saturday and is brought out for worship on that day, it is, and is called, an Easter Icon, as a prefiguration of the coming celebration of the Resurrection of Christ and therefore of the future resurrection of the dead.
