Up for sale is a magnificent 19th century holy water bronze font. This exquisite French religious piece is adorned in relief with layers of scrolls. Three angels or cherubs, cascading garlands of flowers, a serpent with forked tail, and, in the center, an impressive cross. The background is textured to give a three dimensional effect. There is a hanging loop at the back and holes on either side of the piece, also presumably for more secure hanging, while possibly to prevent theft. It is all in very nice condition for its age which is 176 years old. Stamped and scribed on the back is Dumaige 1838. Great patina though out! As you can see from the photographs. This is a unique sculpture by artist Ike"Tennessee" Parker. Ike was a controversial German artist who was actually born with the name Willie Ikemeyer in 1906. He and his wife immigrated to the US in late 1920s but then were deported by to Europe during World War II. He returned to New York City in 1955 and settled in the 1960s in Rhode Island. During the 1970s he taught art at Johnson and Wales University. His artwork-both painting and sculptures-appear very complex and were influenced by the geometric style of Picasso. With his personal history. He wanted to associate himself more with the American populous and officially changed his name from Ikemeyer to the Ike Tennessee Parker monicure. He passed away at age 94 in 2000. This font is very typical of"Ike"s pieces-with its geometric shaping.
