Ancient Greek Tanagra Woman figurine. Terracotta. 11” Tall By Angelo Ventouris
Tanagra Woman figurine. Terracotta. 11” Tall. By Angelo Ventouris Item Description…A Tanagra woman Figurine. Made in the early 70’s by Angelo Ventouris. It is 11” tall made of terracotta and looks exquisite. The patina was made to order(Like it had just got out of the ground) I assure you it is the only one with this patina. The Tanagra figurines were a mold-cast type of Greek terracotta figurines produced from the later fourth century BCE. Primarily in the Boeotian town of Tanagra. They were coated with a liquid white slip before firing and were sometimes painted afterwards in naturalistic tints with watercolors, such as the famous"Dame en Bleu" Lady in Blue" at the Louvre. Scholars have wondered why a rural place like Tanagra produced such fine and rather"urban" style terracotta figures. Tanagra figures depict real ... morewomen— and some men and boys— in everyday costume. With familiar accessories like hats, wreaths or fans. Some character pieces may have represented stock figures from the New Comedy of Menander and other writers. Others continued an earlier tradition of molded terracotta figures used as cult images or votive objects. Typically they are about 10 to 20 centimeters high. For the next few months I will be posting for sale some personal items. Mostly High End museum reproduction ones that I acquired between the 1960’s and 1970’s. They are already antiques of their own. The selling price reflects a fraction of what they will be selling in retail on today’s market. Hope you will appreciate the quality and bid with confidence. I will be shipping only to the US Lower 48 states and within 24 hours of payment. PayPal only. Shipping price reflects the actual cost. Some items cost more due to their weight. Happy Bidding

I cannot be a pro in every period/ artist and an honest mistake is always possible. Finally, if you find any discrepancy after you buy the item, your money back is guaranteed! Terracotta figurine depicts a woman standing with the weight on her right leg. Figure is tightly wrapped in a himation over a floor-length chiton. Her head is turned slightly to her right. Her arms crossed on her chest underneath the himation. It measures about 7 1/4” tall. The base measures 2 3/8” X 1 3/4” There is ... morea vent cut in the reverse side of the figurine. Remains of pink paint on her face and light red and blue on the himation. The clay around her neck is chipped. Possibly her head was veiled by himation. And after a close inspection I found a hairline crack on inside surface of the figurine, close to the base, but the clay is intact. P.S. I found information on-line about the similar figurines: Tanagras” are named after the site in Boeotia. Central Greece, where thousands of similar figures were unearthed in the early 1870s. Figures of men, children and comic actors were also found at Tanagra, but standing female figures are the most numerous. The chief appeal of Tanagra figures lies in their exceptional artistic quality usually considered to be the finest of all Greek figurines. Most Tanagra figures are mold-made and sometimes have a vent cut in the back to ensure the even distribution of heat during the firing. After firing. The figure was coated in a white slip, often a solution of chalk or white clay, and then colors were added on top. The artists who produced these figures were known as coroplasts, literally“modelers of girls” Dear Buyer, Your bid is a commitment. Pl

They were coated with a liquid white slip before firing and were sometimes painted afterwards in naturalistic tints with watercolors. Such as the famous"Dame en Bleu" Lady in Blue" at the Louvre. Scholars have wondered why a rural place like Tanagra produced such fine and rather"urban" style terracotta figures. citation needed] Tanagra figures depict real women— and some men and boys— in everyday costume. With familiar accessories like hats, wreaths or fans. Some character pieces[ 1] may have represented stock figures from the New Comedy of Menander and other writers. Others continued an earlier tradition of molded terracotta figures used as cult images or votive objects. Typically they are about 10 to 20 centimetres high. The coraplasters. RECENT FEEDBACK* Regarding a resent bad and undeserved feedback I received. I sold this buyer a table which unfortunately arrived with a damaged leg. The buyer tried to extort a lot of money out of me for repairs and gas money. I refunded her purchase in full with the condition she would return the package. She agreed and entered a false tracking number to show she was returning the package. I send UPS out to pick up the package and return it at my expense. She would only leave the empty box for UPS to pick up because"all I ask for was the package" Also she felt the need to give a harsh language feedback which brings me to the point of this message. I would like to apologize to my customers who have to read such harsh words printed to my sight. I tried to have it removed because of the content and language but eBay's standards and policy considers the speech and the way it is delivered appropriate. I do not for there are better ways of saying the same thing she said when in a public forum. Please review all my feedback and make an informed decision. My track record of promptness. A stamped Greek terracotta Amphora handle, Rhodes, ca 3rd - 2nd century BC
A stamped Greek Amphora handle. Rhodes, ca 3rd- 2nd century BC Of fired terracotta. With stamped impression positioned at the top of the handle, circular in form stating merchant name and featuring the central motif of a rose- symbol of Rhodes. In Greece. Manufacturing of commercial amphorae began in the 8th century B.C. and the systematic stamping of amphorae began at the end of the 5th century B.C. Stamping probably started because of the wine quality standards demanded by Athens during this time but only the amphorae used for transportation were stamped. A series of Rhodian stamps started to appear in the 4th century B.C. and lasted until the 1st century B.C. As in other city governments. The manufacturers from Rhodes had their own symbols, namely, the rose pattern signifying the city(such as this example) the sun God Helios or the name ... moreof a month from the Rhodian calendar. Generally stamped before firing, these stamps were further used as capacity documents stating the weight for harbour taxes, the merchant and customers, and the manufacturing/filling date according to the Rhodes calendar. The Rhodian amphora stamps could also show the route of exportation from the mainland to the various colonies and settlements in the Mediterranean. Condition: Fragment originally from a transportation amphora. The handle itself is intact with very fine stamped impression. Custom mounted. Beautiful Ancient Greek Terracotta Pottery Bird - 400 BC
A delightful ancient Greek terracotta bird. Probably a pigeon, dating to 400– 200 BC. Beautifully formed. The beautiful animal is shown standing with its wings tucked in towards the body, its head raised inquisitively. This artefact shows striking similarities with the terracotta pigeons produced between 400– 200 BC. Pigeons were highly regarded by the Greeks. Used both as pets and reliable messengers. Ancient Greek Terracotta Pottery Figure of Hermes - 300 BC

The god is shown nude, the lower legs are crossed and he wears only a chlamys draped across his left shoulder. The style was almost certainly inspired by an even older original by Lysippos, a later copy of which Though a beautifully tender piece of Greek art. Ancient Greek Terracotta Child's Rattle Depicting a Boy Seated on a Pig - 100 BC
An ancient Greek terracotta rattle. In the form of a youth riding a pig, dating to around 100 BC. Given its original function as a child’s toy. This odd depiction may reflect something of the ancient Greek sense of humour. The figure is shown nude, reclining lazily across the back of the rotund animal, which appears somewhat stoical given the situation. Despite its relatively small size, there is a strong sense of sculptural integrity to the piece, the figure of the boy in particular is well defined, lending a sense of lifelike vigour. Though a known scene from ancient Greece. There is some confusion as to what these figures actually represent. It is possible they are making reference to a popular story or parable of the time, now lost. It is also possible they were used as protective votives, as pigs were sacrificed to the gods to ensure ... morethe safety of children. But perhaps they were simply intended as they appear to us today, as eccentric objects intended to be puzzled over, laughed at by children, but never entirely understood. For a similar example currently on display at the J. Paul Getty museum. Please note that this piece has been thermoluminescence tested(QED Laboratories)and found to date to the Hellenistic period. The new buyer will be provided with all relevant certification. Length: 4 inches. Condition: Good. The back fractured on the upper part and the piece restored from two large fragments, with two of the legs reattached. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Madame Briand. Ancient Greek Tarentine Pottery Terracotta Head of a Lady - 400 BC
An ancient Greek Tarentine terracotta head of a lady. Dating to 400– 300 BC. The sculptors of ancient Taras in southern Italy had little marble or ready stone for their art. And so they used the one medium they had in abundance, clay. They produced works of such breathtaking beauty that it seems impossible to place them in the same category as other terracotta figures of the period. Here we see a lady of fashion. Her head turned slightly to one side, wearing ornate earrings and with an elaborate coiffure and headpiece. Though this figure would originally have been cast in a mould, the tender feminine features would have been finished by hand, as it would have been simply impossible to achieve this pleasing effect without the skilled hand of an expert sculptor. For an inferior example currently on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. ... moreHeight mounted: 5 inches. Height of head alone: 2 ¼ inches. Condition: Very good. Unrestored. Mounted on a bespoke wooden stand. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of the French painter. Sculptor, film producer and writer Daniel Lander(1927– 2013) Purchased from the Gallerie G. Maspero, Paris on the 29th of July 1969. Mr. Lander. A close friend of the noted artist Jean Cocteau, was an eclectic collector of ancient art, but above all he prized beautiful depictions of the human form. Named for its distinctive “stirrup” shape that the handles form around the false neck. There is a charming sense of individualism about this lovely example, decorated with dashed paint strokes that sweep across the ochre slip. Indeed the whole design is wonderfully inventive, and reaches well beyond the necessity of the object. We can see how pottery vessels during this period were miniature artworks, to be lovingly shaped and decorated by the ancient artist. Examples such as this would have been used for storing olive oil. For eating, cooking and even washing. Height: 4 ⅛ inches. Condition: Very good. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. Swiss private collection. Acquired 1970’s. Fine Ancient Bronze Age Greek Mycenaean Terracotta Pottery Cup - 1500 BC
An exceptional ancient Mycenaean pottery cup. Dating to 1500– 1350 BC. Surely one of the finest examples of its type; simple but superbly executed. This delicate cup is beautifully potted and painted. Composed of fine clay, sitting upon a ring base, the body broadening dramatically into a trumpet-like mouth, the inside decorated with a series of concentric bands which accentuate the flaring shape. Perfectly formed, it remarkable that this vessel could be so small, yet at the same time so refined. Every element of this exquisite little cup has been carefully thought through. The shape and decoration seem to meld together, complementing one another. The wavy bands decorating the outer body appear as stylised bands of seaweed, drifting in the ocean. We can see how the ceramic artisans of ancient Mycenae were inspired by the natural world around ... morethem. Height(to rim only) 1 ¾ inches. Maximum diameter: 3 ¾ inches. Condition: Very good. Two minute chips on rim. Provenance: Ex. Swiss private collection. Acquired 1970’s. Authenticity All items are unconditionally guaranteed to be Authentic as described. Ancient Alexandrian Greek - Egyptian Terracotta Head of an African -150 BC
An ancient Alexandrian terracotta head of an African. Dating from the 2nd Century BC- 2nd Century AD. A fascinating piece. Depicting an African male with thick features, a prominent brow and tightly curled hair. Despite clearly portraying an African, it is worth noting that the Greek artist has seemingly caricatured the facial characteristics- as they often did when depicting foreigners, especially those from sub-Saharan Africa. Heads and figures of this type were produced during the late Hellenistic- early Roman period. The artists who created these pieces took their inspiration from the world around them. Producing scenes and figures from daily life. Tales of Aethiopia(Africa) as a fabled land at the farthest edges of the earth are recorded in some of the earliest Greek literature, a land of mythical creatures where the sun god rose and ... morefell each day. As former inhabitants of this distant region, the fascination in which ancient Greeks held those of African origin is made clear in their art; depicted as slaves, athletes and entertainers, they are always imbued with a sense of mystique. Height: 1 7/8 inches Height mounted: 2 1/2 inches. Condition: Very good. Unrestored and mounted to a bespoke wooden base. Provenance: Ex. Swiss private collection.
