Ancient Greek Red Figure Pottery Apulian Owl Skyphos Wine Cup - 350 BC
A charming. Genuine ancient Greek Apulian owl skyphos(wine cup) dating to approximately 350 BC. The owl skyphos is one of the most iconic ceramics from the ancient Greek world. Depicting as it does the manifestation of the Goddess Athena, shown as an owl perched in the sacred olive groves of Athens. The Skyphos was an ancient vessel type. Used for the consumption of wine, which was often watered down in antiquity. The vase painters of Greek South Italy were ultimately inspired by Athenian red-figure artists. Although they soon developed their own imaginative depictions, shapes and techniques. A particularly fine Skyphos and a lovely example of ancient Greek red-figure art. Diameter: 5 3/8 inches. Height: 3 inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. British private collection of Mr. S. South of England, acquired prior to 2001. ... morePlease note: This is a genuine. Ancient Greek Apulian Red Figure Pottery Epichysis Wine Jug - 340 BC
An ancient Greek Apulian epichysis(wine jug) Dating to 340- 320 BC. The epichysis of classic form. With a contained, soapbox-like body and long elegant handle, neck and pouring spout. The painted scene showing a reclining lady, her hair dressed in a kekryphalos. Wearing a beaded necklace and bracelets, dressed in a flowing chiton, holding out a patera in her right hand and a branch of leaves in the left. Palmettes border the scene. Scrolling around the rim is a beautiful band of laurels. Surely one of the most beautiful forms of ancient Greek pottery. The epichysis is lithe and expressive. Ancient Greek Terracotta Pottery Figure of Hermes - 300 BC
An ancient Greek terracotta figure of Hermes. Dating to 300– 200 BC. Staring wistfully out into the distance. The god is shown nude, the lower legs are crossed and he wears only a chlamys draped across his left shoulder. He perches on the edge of a rocky outcrop, with the left hand clinging to the side and the other clutching his distinctive leather purse. The style was almost certainly inspired by an even older original by Lysippos, a later copy of which Though a beautifully tender piece of Greek art. This wonderful little sculpture hides a deeper story. Often these figures were used as religious offerings to the gods they portrayed; as the god of travel, commerce and the secret wisdoms(amongst many others) we can only guess at what the ancient Greek who deposited this artefact was seeking from Hermes. Please note that this piece has been ... morethermoluminescence tested and found to date to the Hellenistic period. The new buyer will be provided with all relevant certification. Height: 4 inches. The chief appeal of Tanagra figures lies in their exceptional artistic quality usually considered to be the finest of all Greek figurines. The ladies are normally depicted in casual poses and their clothes, which usually consist of a thinner undergarment, the chiton, worn beneath a thicker cloak or himation, are typically pulled and twisted in pleasing patterns which emphasize the form of the figure beneath. Most Tanagra figures are mould made and sometimes have a vent cut in the back to ensure even distribution of heat in the firing. After firing, the figure was coated in a white slip, often a solution of chalk or white clay, and then colors were added on top. The artists who produced these figures were known as coroplasts, literally'modelers of girls'

Ancient Greek Apulian Red Figure Pottery Fish Plate - 4th Century BC
An ancient Apulian Greek red-figure fish plate. Dating to the 4th century BC. Sitting upon a short stem base. With two bream, two molluscs and a spotted torpedo fish around a central garum(fish sauce) recess. The shoulder of the plate decorated with rolling waves, whilst the face itself is gently sloped for collecting juices, ingeniously designed, the shape also recalls the gently rolling sea floor, the source of the bounty. Some of the most endearing and relatable artefacts from the ancient world. Apulian fish plates are amongst the most iconic of all Greek wares, made to serve succulent morsels of grilled seafood, like the fish and molluscs painted on their surface. Seafood was a basic staple of the ancient Mediterranean diet; keen observers of the natural world, the ancient vase painters so accurately captured the shapes and markings of ... morethe fish they depicted that it is possible to identify most of them by species. Though popular. Fish plates are becoming increasingly rare on the private market, especially those with a secure provenance. This beautiful example was published in November 1984 in the catalogue of the prominent Swiss-German auction house Munzen und Medaillen and retains its old collection labels on the base. Diameter: 8 5/8 inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored and with original encrustations. Provenance: Ex. Swiss private collection. Published by Munzen und Medaillen, Basel, November 1984 and with original collection labels on base. A scan of the appropriate pages from the original catalogue will be provided to the new buyer. 5th Century BC Greek Black Figure Volute Krater Vessel
This auction is for a black figure Greek volute Krater vessel. I have had this vase in my collection for approximately 15 years. I did not see any signs of damage or restoration. There appears to be two philosophers on one side of the vessel and possibly the figure of Hercules with a lion on the other. There are scratches to the body and rubbing with some paint loss to the rim. There is a dent to the foot under the figure of Hercules that appears to be a manufacture flaw. This vessel measures 4.5 inches to top of vessel rim and 5 3/8 inches to top of handles. I consider this Volute Krater Vessel to be in very good condition for its age. I will consider offers. Please contact with any questions. Domestic shipping costs have been estimated and if less than quoted will be refunded to buyer. International buyers please contact for expedited shipping ... morequote with tracking. Please note that customs form will reflect actual auction value.
Intact Ancient Greek Apulian Red Figure Ceramic Pottery Kylix Wine Cup - 350 BC
A beautiful. Intact and unrestored ancient Greek Apulian kylix, originating from a prominent private collection and dating to 350- 300 BC. The kylix is of typical elegant form. The shallow dish with footed base and two ribbon-like looped handles. The decoration on the outer dish, painted in red-brown, depicts a laurel wreath, whilst the inside also features a wreath, the tondo at the centre with a palmette. The kylix is one of the most elegant ancient Greek ceramic shapes. Used for drinking wine as it could be held comfortably in one hand, used in the well-known game kottabos, which involved the drunken guests at a symposia flinging the remains of their wine at a specified target, whilst holding the kylix with the index finger through a loop handle. If the thrower hit the target whilst uttering the name of his desired partner, he would be ... morea successful lover. A rare unrestored example with a genuine provenance. A fine piece. Handle to handle diameter: 8 inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. Lohrey collection. Frankfurt, Germany. A prominent collector of ancient ceramics, rather than focusing on one particular culture Mr. Lohrey went after only the best examples from across antiquity. Buying throughout the 1980’s– 1990’s, with his keen eye Lohrey formed one of the leading German collections of its type. Please note: This is a genuine ancient Greek artefact. This piece is offered for sale with a very low reserve to promote our extensive inventory of fine quality antiquities and ancient coins. Ancient Greek Attic Black Figure Pottery Lekythos - 490 BC
An ancient Greek Attic black-figure lekythos. Dating to around 490 BC. A joyous scene decorates the body of this elegant black-figure lekythos(oil flask) We see a procession. Perhaps Dionysiac in nature, with a male figure leading the way, followed by a female musician playing the aulos, a bearded man(possibly Dionysos) carrying a rhyton and another female behind. The form of the vessel itself is delicate. The piriform body sits upon a ringed base, with a strap handle and tall neck flaring gracefully into a trumpet mouth, the shoulders decorated with a black starburst motif. With a series of pseudo or"nonsense" inscriptions running up alongside each figure. This wonderful lekythos offers us a snapshot of life in ancient Greece. Intricate detail is substituted for a true sense of energy and vitality, and the piece is all the richer ... morefor it. Up until recently it was believed that the“nonsense” inscriptions(meaningless strings of Greek letters) that feature on many Attic ceramics such as this were simply gibberish, the result of illiteracy on the part of the painter. However, have shown that many are in fact Greek attempts at re-creating the sounds of foreign names and words. Forming the earliest attestations of many“barbarian” languages. Height: 6 ¾ inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. Swiss private collection. Acquired from Herbert A. Cahn, Kunst der Antike, Basel, 4th May 1990. A copy of the original invoice will be provided to the new buyer. Authenticity All items are unconditionally guaranteed to be Authentic as described. The main register with beautifully exuberant red-figure decoration; on one side is an androgynous winged Eros, seated on a rock and staring wistfully over his shoulder, depicted nude but wearing a profusion of beads, anklets and bracelets, he holds an ornate mirror in his right hand and bells in his left. Opposite is a seated lady of fashion, shown with her garment pulled down to the waist exposing the breasts, the folds of the cloth hang loosely about her folded legs, she wears her hair up in an elaborate beaded coiffure, necklace and bracelets. ... moreIn her right hand she holds a jewellery or make-up box whilst she strokes the ground with her left, a blossoming flower below her- the scene bordered by palmettes. A large. Finely painted example of a genuine Greek red-figure lekanis in excellent condition. One of the most beautiful ancient Greek ceramic shapes. Diameter including handles: 8 3/4 inches. Height: 5 3/8 inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. Lohrey collection. Frankfurt, Germany. Ancient Greek Apulian Red Figure Ceramic Pottery Bell Krater - 4th Century BC
A beautifully painted ancient Greek Apulian red-figure bell krater. Dating to the 4th century BC and originating from a prominent private collection. The krater with disc foot. Short stem, bulbous body and flaring lip, two ribbon-like handles are set bilaterally, beneath the rim is a chevron pattern. The obverse with a nude satyr striding forward and carrying a flaming torch in his right hand, he wears ribbons tied into his hair and across his chest, a thyrsus stands in the background. On the reverse stands a young maenad(female follower of Dionysus) shown wearing himation gown along with bracelets, earrings, necklace and beads in her hair, she holds a jewellery box and thyrsus. The thyrsus, associated with Dionysus(god of wine) and his followers was a symbol of prosperity, fertility, hedonism, and general pleasurable enjoyment. In Greek ... morereligion, this staff was carried by the votaries of Dionysos, it was believed that honey dripped from the tip of the stave. The ancient Greeks did not approve of drinking wine neat. Indeed this was considered a barbarian practice. Instead, they used bell kraters such as this to mix their wine with water for consumption at symposia(social gatherings) The scene on this stunning piece is clearly Dionysiac in nature, and would have been used in an atmosphere of revelry, wine and merriment. Height: 9 ¼ inches. Width at the mouth: 9 ¾ inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. Lohrey collection. Frankfurt, Germany.
