Walker's International Atlas" The base map was from Cram's Railway Atlas. But the plates were used to create this outstanding work of art by hand coloring. The only way to properly describe the colors is compare them with Easter egg dye. This map may have a few minor handling flaws. And shows age on the edges. It is indisputable that Vandermaelen's maps of these remote areas of Canada were the most detailed general atlas maps of the region yet published. The map was issued for his monumental Atlas Universel de Geographie Physique. Politique, Statistique et Mineralogique. A work consisting of six volumes with a total of 378 map sheets drawn as globe gores on the so-called Flamsteed or modified conical projection at a unprecedented 1:1,641,836 scale- the whole of which assembles to form a globe of 7.775 ... moremeters in diameter. Originally published in installments. The completed atlas offered no less than the largest picture of the earth's surface that had ever been recorded. Despite a sale price of 600 gold francs(~ $4000 in 2009 USD) the atlas was a commercial success. Selling hundreds of copies to subscribers ranging from the crowned heads of Europe to Alexander von Humboldt to the Pope. The income from the atlas as well as a significant inheritance enabled Vandermaelen to found the Brussels Geographic Institute along the Chaussée de Gand and Charleroi Canal(along with two adjacent and rather opulent homes for Vandermaelen and his brother) the library of which housed the only example of the giant globe ever constructed from the plates of the atlas. Employing a team of draughtsmen, lithographers and geographers Vandermaelen's Institute continued producing maps of all types throughout his life- nearly 5000 published maps in all. You are looking at a map from Walker’s International Atlas. The map covers the whole of Northwest Ontario. As it was in 1896. The maps themselves were the product of George Cram. A well know map publisher at the turn of the century. Walker took the base Cram’s maps and added hand colored lithography, giving an Easter egg pastel richness that are eye stopping in expression and exact detail. We have heard about a few later and one earlier than 1896. Worldcat.org shows that a few pages. I.e. Maps from the 1896 edition, this one, are at the University of Chicago and the Detroit Public Library. This means that the historical societies, reference libraries, ... morerailroad collections, and museums have never seen these or are unaware of their existence and the importance these maps made on the future of Railroad maps in the United States and Canada. Possibly the title has caused it to be overlooked. Nowhere is to be found that this is a Railroad atlas by its title.
