Up for auction we have an authentic 19th century lift top vanity or dressing table which is Adams style and hand painted. The top features a scene of a courting couple dancing while a lute player plays off to the right. The corners of that scene are embellished with fronds and torches. Rose swags adorn the drawer fronts. The sides each feature a hand painted landscape scene of town as seen from the rural hills. Color scheme of rose, dusty turquoise, ivory. The squared off legs have brass collars at the top. The hardware appears to be original. Two of the drawers are stuck closed and we didn't want to force them. There is also a center pullout flat surface that is stuck closed. The two side compartments are lined in silk inside. The silk has some stains but is intact. The center shallow compartment is wood. Mid to Late 1800's New England Painted 3-Drawer Dressing Table - A True Piece
Up for auction is a beautiful painted 3 drawer mid to late 1800's New England dressing table. I have had this table for about 5 years. But never found a good place to put it, so I'm moving it on. It is in very good condition, I have not done anything to it while I've had it. Please note that the dressing table is not crooked; the frame in pic#1 is. The floral motif is painted, not stenciled. The color you see in the pictures is pretty true. It is a dull yellow, old color. The drawers are dove-tailed and chamfered, with square nails. Nice old construction. I'm not sure what type wood this is- pine? I don't think it is oak, walnut, could be ash? Note the blue/white paint in the drawers- this could have been the very original color. The back does have some writing on it- probably the owner of the piece from a long time ago. ... moreLooks like there was some support added(see back) The drawers pull out smoothly- no sticking. Antique Pine Dressing Table with Framed 3 Sided Mirror
This is a beautiful pine dressing table. It has carved detail around the border of the mirror and on the doors of the table. The mirror comes off if desired. The sides of the mirror are movable. Each side of the dressing table has a cabinet with a shelf and in the middle there is a drawer. Everything is original. It has a few scratches and stains as you can see but nothing major at all. Some of the pieces of wood are separating a very little bit as old pieces will do but again nothing major at all. It's absolutely beautiful and I've enjoyed it for many years. Sheraton Federal vanity lowboy dressing table c.1810
This is a vintage vanity aka lowboy dressing table or dresser with a beveled glass mirror attached. I'm not an antique expert by any stretch. But when I saw the hand cut dovetails, I knew this was an old piece. After seeing that I did a bit of research. From that, I think this is Sheraton style dressing table. It could be Federal, but the brass hardware, which appears to be original, looks more like Sheraton. From what I've read, Sheraton and Federal styles of furniture were produced up to about 1820. Attaching mirrors to the top of dressing tables started around 1800. Hence my c.1810 guess at the age. Other indicators of its age are the hand cut dovetails, which put it earlier than 1880; and use of single wide boards, which put it earlier than 1860. Most everything, including the hardware, looks pretty original to me. It is mounted ... moreon small casters, which I don't know to be original. The top does have a crack on one side near the rear. I've been told the wood looks like walnut. I don't know if it's walnut, but it is a hardwood for sure. The piece is 42" wide x 19" deep. The top sits 30" off the floor and it's 60" tall overall. I purchased this piece at Antique Emporium in Modesto. California July 2003. I simply fell in love with it. The receipt I have states it is a"tiger maple dressing table with Cheval Mirror, circa 1895. I have purchased many items from these folks through the years for my personal enjoyment. I am not an expert in antiques. I do know what I like and this is a gorgeous wood very unusual to me, unlike the other pieces I have collected. I sell it now only due to a move. It is carved. Curvy, graceful, beautiful and graced my entry hall as the show piece that I think it is. I decorated it for every holiday and it is a delight for everyone. This beautifully shaped vanity is very old and in very good condition for age. There are limited minor imperfections from age. I was never sure about the type of wood but now I believe it to be mahogany. It is lighter weight. There are two side drawers on the step-up section and one larger one in the lower center. It has a lower shelf stretcher. No repairs have been made that I am aware of. No oil. It has always been kept in a corner, avoiding sunlight. The cartouche-shaped bevelled plate above a glass-inset top with two single drawer compartments over a channel-moulded drawer on moulded cabriole legs. A pretty revival of a mid-18th century French design. This piece is executed in the Louis XV style. Louis XV( 1710- 1774) was a monarch of the House of Bourbon who ruled as King of France and Navarre from 1 September 1715 until his death. He succeeded his great-grandfather Louis XIV at the age of five. Until he reached maturity in 1723. Five beveled mirrors including two side dressing mirrors which are adjustable, beautiful heavy carved finials above the three larger mirrors which clearly distinguish it as French and mirror back candle stands 16 1/2 inches above the lovely top surface on the dresser. The drawers on this lovely dressing table are dovetailed and have gorgeous burl walnut veneer decorative fronts and fabulous original metal drawer pulls. Exceptional RegencyTunbridgeware dome top dressing table bottle case;
This is a fine. Diminutive example of Tunbridgeware at its best. The box was likely used for a dressing table,possibly for cologne, and may have been a travel piece. The domed and hinged lid is decorated with a basket of flowers in the neoclassical taste. There is a wide band of floral work continuing around the lower half of the case,and the escutcheon is inlaid with a star motif. The veneers have contrasting dark and light color. The upper lid has bands of different patterns. Inside the lid is a provenance typed by"Alfred Regis" His note says: Sussex Art. Called The Lost Art since 1790. My Uncle Bought this Sample in 1810" Of course Tunbridge refers to the town of Royal Tunbridge Wells. A town in Kent,near London and bordering East Sussex County. It is here that this type of pictorial veneering inlay technique known as Tunbridgeware ... morebecame famous. The box is compartmented into two bottle components and the interior is lined with red velvet. The bottles are mold blown and clear. One of them has the pontil mark at the bottom smoothed out as was customary in the 19th century. Each has a chamfered stopper. The whole piece is in excellent structural condition throughout. Considering its age and probable use early on. There is some minor missing veneer on the frontal part of the lid. On the left front edge the veneer loss is about 1 1/2" and on the right and left edges there is a loss of about 1/2" to 3/4" There is wear to the escutcheon from the box having been locked and unlocked. There is no key. Frankly. I would suggest not having these minor losses restored unless one could find someone who specialized in Tunbridgeware and may actually have some pictorial veneer. That may be possible in England but it is quite unlikely in the US. In any case, this is part of the history of the piece and the overall presentation is striking and the patina and color uniform from age.
