We purchased some really interesting pieces from this collector as he is downsizing, and this antique oak dresser was refinished about 20-30 years ago, and we did a couple of touch ups. This fantastic oak dresser is in nice condition in a medium oak stain finish. It has two small concave front drawers on the top and a large bow front drawer in the base for plenty of storage. The Victorian dresser has cabriole carved columns coming down into a detail claw foot, panel sides, multi-molded rolled front above the drawers, carved yolks that hold up the mirror.

Description: This listing is for a ... more20th Century Benchmade Chippendale Style Shell Carved Block Front Chest of Drawers over Ball and Claw Feet. This is an absolutely stunning work of art with attention shown in every detail of the case. The entire case is solid mahogany. With carefully selected grains that produce a glowing fire throughout. The rim is ruled around the front and sides over a top drawer with a gallery of three carved shells over the blocked encasements below. The two outmost shells are convex, carved out of solid mahogany, each flanking the concave central shell with a keyhole in the middle. The drawer has an incredible thick facade and, uniquely, no hardware- the key is meant to act as the pull hardware, the craftsman not wanting to distract from the shell carvings by adding hardware. The three following drawers feature incredible blocking over shaped molding that flows with the outline of the chest. Each drawer is hand dovetailed at the front and back, the top drawer having a single solid board bottom, each other drawer being two board construction. The case rests over incredible hand carved ball and claw feet, each flawlessly formed with detail in every joint, muscle and stretched nail. The back two feet are carved only in the front, much in the nature of the period chests, where an absence of any mechanical device meant everything was crafted by hand- the craftsman would regularly look for ways to reduce finishing work without detracting from the overall result of the case, as our craftsman did in this chest by leaving the back of the back feet unformed. This is one of the most precise and beautiful block front reproductions we've come across. An original block front is unattainable by all but the most affluent of collectors; this is the closest most of America will get to the real block front. The bottom drawer is constructed of 2" thick from mahogany wood. The small pulls are solid brass. The sides of the chest have matchbook veneer. The marble top is in very good condition, no cracks. The items featured in this lot are a matched pair of solid mahogany half pilasters that go on the front of a period Empire chest. These are some what rare in the fact that they usually do not become available and are very prized by restoration type individuals. The pilasters retain their original finish(nice patina) and appear to be in nice used condition(with the exception of one pilaster missing an"ear" that can be carved to replace. The old finish is very well preserved and has been waxed and buffed. All that is needed to maintain its warm patina is an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth. The adjustable mirror has lots of"smoke" to show its age. If this is not charming, the glass could be replaced if desired. Here is an absolutely gorgeous antique heavy carved French walnut dressing table with chest of drawers. Five beveled mirrors including two side dressing mirrors which are adjustable, beautiful heavy carved finials above the three larger mirrors which clearly distinguish it as French and mirror back candle stands 16 1/2 inches above the lovely top surface on the dresser. The drawers on this lovely dressing table are dovetailed and have gorgeous burl walnut veneer decorative fronts and fabulous original metal drawer pulls. I've included a number of photographs in an attempt to accurately represent the design, quality, condition and construction as well as the overall beauty and desirability of this absolutely delightful late 19th to early 20th century dressing table. This terrific dressing table stands 74 3/4 inches tall to the top the ... morethe carved finial on the central large mirror and measures 42 inches wide and 18 inches deep front to back at the widest points of the dresser. there are a total of five drawers including a small drawer just below the large mirror above the dresser top surface. Below are two top drawers. Each 16 1/2 inches wide by 15 1/4 inches front to back by 4 inches deep. Below these two top side by side drawers are two large drawers, each 35 inches wide by 15 1/2 inches front to back and 6 and 6 1/2 inches deep respectively, in descending order. The large center mirror with the carved frame around it is 39 3/4 inches tall by 18 1/2 inches wide with the beveled mirror within measuring 27 3/4 inches by 15 1/2 inches at it's widest points. A very adorable antique. Circa 1840's- 1850's, folk art child's dresser with mirror. The case is of walnut, the drawer front and sides with rosewood veneers. There is geometric parquetry bandings in maple, cherry, and mahogany. The dovetailed drawers have the original porcelain knobs, the interiors with period wallpaper liners. The mirror frame and harp are leaf carved walnut, the mirror original. The feet are carved as leaf scrolls. It measures 37" tall by 17-1/2" wide 13-1/2' deep. Very good condition: original finish with minor flaking. Some losses to marquetry or rosewood veneer(see photos. Two top boards with warping, minor scuffing to feet or base molding. Mirror glass without chips, cracks or backing spots. The screw knobs on harp to position the mirror frame are probably newer replacement. The mirror and ... moreharp are removable for shipment.

The best part about this piece is that it is has not been refinished or altered since it was manufactured. The photo speaks for itself. This piece is massize measuring approximately 94" tall and 53.5" wide. Good luck finding another of this quality and size. Aside from a few minor flaws to the top and dulling of the finish, I can't fault this piece. Considering the age, I would give this a 8 or 9 out of 10. The back of the dresser shows it belonged to Henry Wims(Williams) An ex-slave according to the News-Palladium from Benton Harbor Michigan(Saturday, April 1, 1950(pg.9) Henry came up to Benton Harbor from Kentucky through Indiana in 1882. When he was a young man, about 20 years of age. He had been to Louisville where the cars stopped and where there was a great concentration of Union soldiers during the Civil war and decided to follow the railroad north and see where the tracks joined the"Underground railway" that he had heard so much about. Also, his wife's father lived at St. Joseph, where there were many ex-slaves and their descendants. His travels brought him to Benton Harbor.
