Beautiful hand carved Saint Wendelin. From the Philippines. Glass eyes and good paint, which has the chalky appearance of age. Reproduction. 14 1/4" tall and 5 1/4" wide. This beautiful piece will be a great addition to your collection. He is holding a lamb. Th ere is very little definite information about this saint. His earliest biographies(two in Latin and two in German) Did not appear until after 1417. The name"Wendelin" means"wanderer" or"pilgrim" in Old High German. The story as told there is that Wendelin was the son of a Scottish king. After a piously spent youth he secretly left his home on a pilgrimage to Rome. On his way back he settled as a hermit at Westrich in the Diocese of Trier. When a wealthy landowner criticized him for his idle life he entered his service as a herdsman. But later ... morea miracle obliged the landowner to allow him to return to his solitude. Wendelin then established a company of hermits from which sprang the Benedictine Abbey of Tholey in Saarland. He was consecrated abbot about 597. According to the later legends, while Tholey was apparently founded as a collegiate body about 630. It is difficult to say how far the later biographers are trustworthy. This piece was made in the style of antique Santos. Which were common in homes and local shrines. This Atocha looked truly old and even without my glasses I saw that the newspaper that was affixed to the back said Pasqua and Guadalajara 1940. The glass is very old and pocked and the frame. Altho a tad bent, is wonderful. El nino as the figure of the Christ child is not as important to Latin America as is the Virgin of Guadalupe- no one can touch Her status.but Atocha is significant and is pictured here appearing to the dying and preventing women from being harmed. Almost always associated with roses- as is the Virgin of Guadalupe. Below is info from the Catholic church webpage for Atocha. Isidore was accustomed to hearing Mass at one of the churches in Madrid. One day, his fellow labourers complained to their master that Isidore was always late for work in the morning. Upon investigation, so runs the legend, the master found Isidore at prayer whilst an angel was doing the ploughing for him. On another occasion. His master saw an angel ploughing on either side of him, so that Isidore's work was equal to that of three of his fellow labourers. Isidore is also said to have brought back to life his master's deceased daughter, and to have caused a fountain of fresh water to burst from the dry earth to quench his master's thirst. ... moreOne snowy day. Saint George Slaying Dragon Hand Carved 19thc, Santo Jorge
St. George. England's Patron- Hand carved wood depiction of St. George slaying the dragon. This statue circa the 1850's and it's in great condition. The top portion of the spear broke off, but can easily be glued back in place. It has a crack on the bottom center of the base. It measures 20" tall x 14" wide x 4" depth, and weights approximately 20lbs. Please see images to better appreciate this museum quality work of art. Please feel free to make an offer. The tale goes that the dragon made its nest by the fresh water spring near the town of Silene in Libya. When people came to collect water. I have an unusual pair of antique Catholic folk art carvings of Jesus likely circa 1900-1950. Both are in reasonably good condition with some ware including a chip on the back of the bigger one. They look as though they were hung or mounted on an alter or as a decoration as there is a hole for a hook or something. There carved from solid blocks of Cedar. I believe they are called Santos or saint statues. Their each about 17 1/2 inches tall.

Antique Santo Philippines Christianity statue old antique
This is a Santos that I am selling for my mother. About 30 years ago she bought two large collections of Santos that were represented as being 16th and 17th century and from the Philippines. I don't know Santos but am trying to learn quickly. I also do not know Saints and their iconography. I think that this might be The Immaculata. This one has very nice paint. More than most in the collection but peeling in places. She is about 11 1/2 inches tall. I make no claims about these Santos other than they have been in my mother's possession for 30 years. Antique Mexican Ceramic Santo
This is a marvelous Antique Mexican Santo made of the famous black pottery of Oaxaca. The form is simple and pure. The condition is superb. The luster of the black pottery picks up light around every detail. The hands. The face, the crucifix- all rendered with a fine hand. The figure has been in our home over 40 years. But the work is close to twice that age. It stands just over 10 inches tall. I hope the next owner will love her as much has we have. Offered for the very first time.

Jose Luis Negron was born in Corozal in 1928 to a farming family. Looking for a better life, the family moved to Brooklyn in 1946. Following his marriage and the birth of his son Neftali Negron and his family ... morereturned to Corozal in 1962. In New York and Puerto Rico, Jose Negron made his living sewing carpets. It was his son Neftali who introduced Jose Negron to the art of carving santos and would prepare blocks of wood by drawing the silhouettes of figures for his father to carve. His santos have won many prizes and are part of the collections of the Museo de Arte de Ponce and the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture in San Juan. Jose Negron taught his nephew and two grand nieces how to carve. In 1996 the Bacardi Festival was dedicated to him and he won first price in the carving of Saint Anthony. In 1997 he obtained second prize on the carving of Juan Alejo de Arizmendi, in 1998 he obtained third prize in th el Cuarto Certamen de la Talla de San Juan Bautista. In 2005 he was recognized as a master carver by the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Jose Negron passed away in 2009. This Santo is hand carved from cedar wood and polychrome painted by Jose L. Negron. What a wonderful old Chalkware statue of Santo Nino de Atocha. The Holy Child. Someone made him a beautiful satin robe of red and gold. He is 17" tall, hand painted and beautiful.
