This is another relic from the estate of a French Archbishop's extensive relic collection. This is a relic of Saint Joseph's staff or walking stick. The relic is labeled: S. Joseph Sp BM. Saint Joseph, spouse of the Virgin Mary There are no first class relics of Saint Joseph. Ancient church tradition says he was assumed into heaven. Like the Blessed Mother, but this is not church dogma. There are 3 different relics associated with and venerated for Saint Joseph; his cloak. His staff and his belt. This relic is from his staff. The main relic of his staff is encased in silver and kept in the Hermitage of Camaldoli in Central Italy. The staff St. Joseph holds comes from an apocryphal tale. According to The Golden Legend. Several men besides Joseph wanted Mary's hand in marriage. Each suitor, the story goes, was instructed by the ... morehigh priest to place a staff on an altar. The staff that Joseph brought miraculously burst into leaf, a sign that he was God's choice to be Mary's husband{compare this story with the account of Aaron's rod blossoming in Numbers 17:16-23} In artistic representations of the scene, the unsuccessful suitors are usually portrayed breaking their staffs across their knees, while Joseph holds his leafy staff. Vintage Linen Cloth Holy Face Jesus Effigy Religious Relic Catholic Artifact
Vintage Linen Cloth Holy Face Jesus Effigy Religious Roman Catholic Artifact. Interesting piece of cloth or linen of some sort with a holy face effigy of Jesus Christ. From what I can find these were made by the Vatican and sold if indeed this is a real one from the Vatican. The cloth would have touched the Veil of Veronica. The wood of the true cross, and the iron of the spear if a real piece. The linen piece has a black circular stamped seal of some sort can make out: Archalis Basilica Vaticana inside the circle is an“M” looking letter with a challis on top. The piece was in a plain wood and glass frame when found small stain in bottom left corner when looking at the picture. Some foxing browning to the cloth and a few wrinkles but otherwise nice condition religious artifact. Unsure of age foxing leads me to believe not new certainly. I ... moretried finding it at one of the websites with the effigies but could not locate this exact one. Below the face of Christ it says: VERA EFFIGIES SACRI VULTUS D. N. JESU CHRISTI. QUAE ROMAE IN SACROSANCTA BASILICA S.PETRI IN VATICANO RELIGIOSISSIME ASSERVATUR ET COLITUR. Not quite sure what to make of this relic.
