It is a 1 gallon shoulder/whiskey jug. It has the maple leaf logo on the front. The jug is about 10.5 inches tall and just under 7 inches in diameter. It was preowned but was very well taken care of. I see a few shallow chips on the front rim(where the white portion begins) There is a 3 inch rough section along the rim on the back, as well as a small hairline crack. There is a small spot on the mouth of the jar where it wasn't completely covered with the brown glaze. I believe any other imperfections I see are only production flaws. Well used English Copper One Half Gallon Jug This shape is called a Harvester measure. Made of solid copper body with a hollow handle. These were made in England in this same design since 1780. This one has the lead capacity seal on the side of the lip and is marked for the reign of George V, GR and a Crown within a diamond) dating it from 1910 to 1935. These are sometime found together with other similar jugs in varying measurement sizes. Along with the lead capacity mark they were also engraved on the front with the capacity size. This one is engraved 1/2 Gallon. It's been well used over many years and has some dents along the lower part. We don't see these as a detriment, though, we think it adds character. Certainly still handsome and in good order, still holds water, no leaks. We've given it a light cleaning and polishing. Size" 10" high- 7" across the base- Weighs 3lbs. Antique. Western Stoneware Co. 1 gallon, top pattern Western Shoulder jug. Rare top patterned, No 1 in a maple leaf. Measures 10 1/4 inches tall and the base is 7 inches across. Has a very thin hair line crack on the spout(picture 7) but not bad. There is a mold defect when it was fired, and appears to have caused a glaze bubble which made the hole on top of maple leaf. This not a chip but occured during the firing process. Makes in unique. There is a chip on the bottom of jug which you cannot see when sitting on a surface. Comes from a smoke free home. Antique Douglass Clay Products Co Anomaly 1 Gallon Water Jug-Rare
This is an antique Douglass Clay Product Co 1 gallon water jug. The Douglass Clay Product Co in Los Angeles. CA operated from 1903-1910 when it was bought out by another company, but they continued to make vessels after this time, but apparently under that company's name. The clay products in the LA area were so good due to the exceptionally fine clay found in Southern California. This one has a logo for Douglass that we have not seen anywhere else. The jug also has anomalies that occurred in the manufacturing of the jug, making it doubly unique. There is a small hole in side of jug that someone tried to tape over. I have not removed this tape. There is a chip on top rim, several small chips in bottom edge, few chips on bottom and some coloring is coming off the top rim. The handle has a few small chips. I see a few shallow chips on the front rim(where the white portion begins) There is a 3 inch rough section along the rim on the back, as well as a small hairline crack. There is a small spot on the mouth of the jar where it wasn't completely covered with the brown glaze. I believe any other imperfections I see are only production flaws. This antique moonshine jug has the characteristic crown stamp known for Ransbottom Brothers pottery. The upper portion. Which is cone shaped, has a handle and is glazed very glossy brown. The glaze goes into the interior of the jug. The glaze is scuffed on the handle. It has a small dent about 0.5 cm in diameter. The cylinder is cream-colored and semi-glossy glazed. It has some discoloration and scuffs. The glaze is worn slightly in a few spots. The jug has no cracks in the side or base. Antique stoneware jug made by the Robinson Clay Products Co. founded in Akron. Ohio in 1856. The one gallon jug is decorated with a very artistic design with 2 sets of blue bands seperated with a white band in the middle. This jug was custom made into a lamp by a lighting firm in Avon, Ohio in 1992 for my home. The base of the jug was drilled and has a turned hardwood base and top with internal wiring. This jug lamp is in great condition with no chips. Cracks, stains or repairs. Works perfectly. There is a tight line extending about 2 1/2 in. from the spout on one side which does not effect the stability of the jug. The lamp is approx 12 1/2 in. tall and 7 1/4 in. diameter base. The jug has a brown top and then a band of tan coloring and then cream color on the bottom section. It has an applied handle and is estimated to be half gallon size. The crock whiskey jug measures about 10 1/4 inches tall and 6 inches wide. It is pretty good condition but does have a couple of surface chips in the dark brown area toward the tan colored band. There's also crazing on the bottom and sides of the jug mainly noted in the light colored areas. The jug also has some pin holes that are normally seen on these jugs. Nice old one gallon whiskey shoulder jug from Western Stoneware Co. in Monmouth. IL. It has been used and shows some wear mainly around the bottom. There is a surface crack around the bottom(pic. 4) but the jug doesn't leak. The bottom edge has a couple of chips, see pics. 5-6. There are a couple of spots where the brown shiny glaze wasn't applied uniformly at the factory. I do not have a cork for this jug. Shipping allows for double boxing. Pretty sure with the photos you have listed that this jug is a quarter gallon rather that a half gallon. I am not aware of anyone who has actually measured the capacity of the canteens but for over 40 years this size is considered the quart. I already have a set but my two half gallons could be upgraded. Your jug is an exceptional example of this rare piece. The rarity of the quart has held but several other half gallon examples have surfaced. The quart usually brings a higher price than the half. The gallon is still the toughest to get. Offered is this small vintage or antique beige and dark brown moonshine whiskey jug. The jug stands approx. 9 1/4" high. Is 5 1/2" across at the base and holds about 1/2 gallon. It is in very good condition. There is a small rough area on the top of the handle which is partially glazed over so apparently done while being made. There are numerous bumps and raised areas along the sides. Also glazed over. There are some small chips some stray dark brown glaze along the top rim. Bottom Marked Minnesota Stoneware Red Wing 1 Gallon Common Jug w/ Brown Glaze
For your consideration is a one gallon. Common style jug, made by Minnesota Stoneware Co. of Red Wing, Minnesota. This company existed from 1883 to 1906; in 1906 it merged with Red Wing Stoneware Company to form Red Wing Union Stoneware Company. The embossed writing on the bottom is 1/2 of an inch tall and says: MINNESOTA STONEWARE CO RED WING; however due to sloppiness during manufacturing, some of this writing is indecipherable. The handle was attached by hand and was attached at an angle; this and other manufacturing defects make this jug unique. This jug was touching another piece of stoneware during firing and when the two pieces were separated, the other piece got off with some of this jug's glaze from the handle and side. This jug is 8 3/4" tall and the bottom is 7 3/4" in diameter. This jug has 0 cracks and 0 chips, ... morehowever it does have some glaze skips and the previously mentioned manufacturing defects. Antique C Hermann Whiskey Jug Salt Glazed Rust and Brown Tones 1 gallon
This is a wonderful old crockery sipping jug. Although I do not know how anyone could possibly sip from a jug as heavy as this. This weighs almost 10 pounds, you can tell it is a very old jug the minute you lift it. On the jug is the emblem for C. Hermann& Co. of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. We looked this company up and they stopped making this kind of jug in 1875 so it cannot be newer than that. It is in remarkable condition with no chips or cracks. This jug is almost 9 inches high and about 6 inches in diameter. The jug has a salt glaze. The red brown color occupies the first 2/3 of the jug and then moves to dark brown to tan. The bottom is unglazed. As I said this is a very heavy item. Careful packaging requires a larger box that will hold substantial packaging material.
