What IS it? A set of antique hand-carved fluted Corinthian columns from a Philadelphia home built in 1887. There are two free-standing columns and two sets of two columns each that go against a wall. The two freestanding columns are round. The two sets of columns that go against a wall are square with five flutes across the fron t of each and four flutes on each side. The carving on these columns is very fine and beautifully executed. How big? Height is 79 3/8 inches. Width of capitals at their widest is 8 1/2 inches. Huge set of porch column posts or Piers from a circa 1890 classical style victorian home. Measure 93" tall- are fluted with 10" square shafts and are 13.5" square on top capital and bottom base. There is a 6' run of railing- the railing is 28" high with 5" wide hand rail on top. Balusters are 2.75" square and 20.5" tall. Great set- most likely for a porch overhang. Could be re-used interior or exterior. Great old shabby chippy peeling yellow paing. I was told at the auction that it is an oak plant stand but it is pretty tall so I will let you be the judge what it is or what you would like to use it for. It does have an awesome oak veneer sheet over the actual fluted wood but it does have some chipped off pieces as shown in the pictures. I am not sure what type of wood is underneath or on the feet. It is a unique and beautiful piece. I was also told it was from the early 1900's or possibly older. This is a nice pair of carved and fluted mahogany post with urn finials. They measure aprox. 61 1/2" high x 3 1/2" in diameter and 3" in diameter at the bottom. The fluted portion measures 36" high. They were most likely from a canopy bed as the finials can be removed. The top 12" piece can be easily removed which we will most likely do for shipping purposes. Pair Amazing Antique Galvanized Steel Cast Iron Tapered Fluted Doric Columns
Rare antique pair of steel and cast iron classical columns. The bases and capitals are heavy walled cast iron and the shafts are(looks like galvanized) steel.A nice heavy gauge that looks like 12 or 14 gauge. No cracks to the cast iron. The fluted shafts are very rigid and there are no apparent dents or dings,though many layers of paint exist. It would take a real sharp blow to dent these. As strong as they are,I would not consider them to be load bearing on their own, though they would hold quite a bit of weight.A 6 x 6 or a 4 x 4 wood post was probably used as a bearing post.For what they are,the condition is excellent,with no rot, rust-through or bends. I would classify any rust as surface rust.The bases and capitals fit snuggly. They measure 93-1/4" tall each.Including the base and capital.The base measure 13-1/2" square and ... morethe capitals are 10-1/2" square. These are also tapered.The shaft being 10" in diameter at the bottom and 8" at the top.This does not get picked up in photos-they appear straight. But in person,they are noticably tapered, required a trapazoidal blank of sheet steel and some pretty trick machinery. Perfect for decorative interior columns in spaces with an 8ft ceiling. If the paint were stripped,these would look incredible. Pick up from Montclair.N.J. due to weight and size. Omg. Back from meeting with my favorite Detroit antique picker. I have the best old salvaged antique column. The base is wood, top capital gesso or a cement/ plaster material. On top of the capital is a wood topper. I love the fact that this fluted column is squared. This piece reminders me of a column on the tv show Vanderpump rules on bravo. Salvage like this is really hard to find. The piece has a very chippy white patina. It measures: a little shy of 61" tall. The base is around 9 1/2" on each side. This is a very nice pair of gilded and fluted walnut posts that were salvaged from an antique or vintage French bed. They each measure aprox. 49 1/2" high x 3 3/4" square near the bottom and are 1 3/4" square at the very top. The applique is made of gesso or some sort of composition material. Some of the applique is missing as you can see in the pictures. Some may possibly become loose during shipping, we will do our best to protect these areas. Top has a Corinthian Capital that has a couple missing pieces(please see pictures) I used the other three I have to add great architectural interest to a built-in shelving area I created(see last two pictures showing my project- not yet finished. 2 of these columns are just primed and the other has not yet been cleaned and primed.
