These are a work of art ... moreas well as fireplace andirons. They are circa 1820 to 1830 and have much artistic detail. Each andiron is topped with a flame finial in brass. The base of each andiron has much detail including figural bust. Floral, scroll, classical architectural swag. The rear legs are cast iron. Each with a Pine Cone Finial. The andirons have a Paw Foot. Each andiron measures 19" tall x 9 1/2" wide x 19" deep. One cast iron leg where attached to the brass column base has had some work at some point in time possibly creating a minor crack in the seam and the rear adjusting bolt on each leg has been replaced with older bolts. There is a minor ding in the large ball of each column but otherwise in very good condition and stunningly beautiful. These are in as found condition. Not cleaned, with great patina. Please look at the pics to see the beauty of these andirons. These andirons have an old Livingston Antiques. Charleston SC tag on them. We were told they have been in storage there for many years before coming from a Charleston estate. Here you have a lovely Antique Victorian Bronze Window Bench. The construction of the seat frame is made of iron. The center stretcher features two profile plaques of kings or knights facing each other. While on the ends there are other two plaques of same style just different person, one on each side. There are other medieval motifs featured, bench reticulated all around. Very good quality. Good condition, sturdy. Height is 23" 43.5" long and 14.5" deep, while the seat height is 19" Great bargain. This is a solid Black Cherry mantel. It also makes a really nice display shelf. It has an oil finish topped with a light coat of polyurethane that really makes the grain and color variations come alive. The color is all natural and no stain has been applied. Each and every piece of wood is at least 100 years old. Most of the barns and houses were ... morebuilt from 1860- 1920's. The oldest pieces are typically what is called"hand hewn" This is where they used ax to cut the bark off the timbers and square up the logs. The other type are"saw cut" These pieces were either out of a newer building(1920's) or the owner was rich and had access to a saw mill. These pieces are distinguised by the swirl/ saw blade marks on the wood. On a number of pieces we will cut the top off. Sand, stain and varnish them. This gives a nice flat uniform finished piece. Only the cut areas are stained to match the original front and bottom. The color on the hand hewn section is from time and weathering. We try to leave as much original as we can while keeping it's integrity sound. Each piece is cleaned. Sanded, and kiln dried(if req'd) to 160 °-170º at the core temperture for 12 hours. We finish with three coats of sprayed commercial grade flat finish polyurethane. Vintage mantel Green Slate or Serpentine stone 1800's
This mantle came out of a very old 1800s Southern Home in Montgomery Alabama. It is of a green slate or serpentine stone and in good condition. The mantle has been safely crated and stored for over 50 years. Crated. This mantle is one part of this Southern Antique collector's possessions-it was once put to practical use in. Warming the grand living room where it once stood. Then as the old home was destroyed this collector carefully salvaged the old mantle and stored in for more than half of a century.The 1960's Newspaper article said.Maybe the collector didn’t even remember where it was stored or why he had saved it all those years. Maybe just because he liked it, with no use in mind. But the fact remains that, in depths of the Great Depression when the decorative features of razed residences might be had, at least, for carting them ... moreaway at most, for a song. Mantels of this type were popular with upscale 19th Century Architects and were used to grace the mansions they built during the last half of the Century. This mantel with its old patina that remains to the surface. Whether it may have been made in America or imported for a southern residence, it is a handsome mantel. Circa 1875. Handsome fireplace mantel in slate. A wonderful example of 19th century Renaissance Revival/Aesthetic Movement design, done in a soft green stone. I was told this mantel was green slate but it could be Serpentine. A stone is used almost exclusively for interior finish and decorations, which is quarried here in the South. The stone could also be Soapstone which has its own unique beauty and colors. Soapstone. Which on the hardness scale is rated at one, compared to a diamond, which is ten, is nonetheless quite hard. It is also non-porous so it will not stain, like granite or marble. Whichever the stone, it is a handsome green color and very old! Peck Stow& Wilcox Company I found these great Owl Andirons in my 94-year-old father’s estate. They’ve been in my family for as long as I can recall. I remember as a boy staring at the yellow glass eyes as the fire lit them from behind. These very beautiful(and very heavy. Each one almost 7 pounds) Perched Owl Andirons are in amazing condition. There are NO breaks, cracks or signs or past repairs. The yellow glass eyes look just like new, and the light of the fire makes them glow like the owl is alive! It is rare to find all four glass eyes in PERFECT condition; there are no cracks. Chips or scratches on the eyes. The Owl measures 15.5’ tall and is 9.75” wide at the base. The firedog(the piece that the logs rest ... moreon) measures 14.75” long. One of the firedogs is missing. They sell replacement firedogs at fireplace shops and it simply slides into a track on the back side of the andiron. The markings on the inside of each andiron are P S& W Co. There are two other markings a‘G’ and‘S’ stacked over one another to the left of the company stamp. These pieces are distinguised by the swirl/ saw blade marks on the wood. On a number of pieces we will cut the top off. Sand, stain and varnish them. This gives a nice flat uniform finished piece. Only the cut areas are stained to match the original front and bottom. The color on the hand hewn section is from time and weathering. We try to leave as much original as we can while keeping it's integrity sound. Each piece is cleaned. Sanded, and kiln dried(if req'd) to 160 °-170º at the core temperture for 12 hours. Late Victorian era cast iron fireplace opening surround. 27 3/4" high, 22 1/2" wide, inside opening is 16" wide. Foundry style number"40" in raised numbers on the back. Design is simple and geometric with a diamond shape center top, very simplified stylized flowers and foliage on either side. The little arms sticking out in the opening would have been for the summer cover to lean against. There is quite a bit of surface rust and quite a few old crusty coats of paint on this surround. The molding details will be much more obvious with restoration. The oldest pieces are typically what is called"hand hewn" This is where they used ax to cut the bark off the timbers and square up the logs. The other type are"saw cut" These pieces were either out of a newer building(1920's) or the owner was rich and had access to a saw mill. These pieces are distinguised by the swirl/ saw blade marks on the wood. On a number of pieces we will cut the top off. Sand, stain and varnish them. This gives a nice flat uniform finished piece. Only the cut areas are stained to match the original front and bottom. The color on the hand hewn section is from time and weathering. We try to leave as much original as we can while keeping it's integrity sound. Each piece is cleaned. Sanded, and kiln dried(if req'd) to 160 °-170º at the core temperture for 12 hours. We finish with three coats of sprayed commercial grade flat finish polyurethane. This is a SPECTAUCLAR. Set of Antique Boston- Hunneman Brass Fireplace ANDIRONS! From the maker Hunneman of Boston. These were made in the late 1700's- very early 1800’s. Stamped"HUNNEMAN 555 BOSTON" Stunning Ball-top design- ALL ORIGINAL. You can see the design is quite bold& strong with the matching log stop still in place. The condition is excellent- certainly some dings and wear as you would expect from items of the this age and use, but no missing pieces or major damage. They have a lovely patina, but I am certain would polish up nicely should the new owner choose to do so. Since many are interested in the patina, I have left them as is. Hunneman was an apprentice to Paul Revere; more about Hunneman can be found in"The Brass Book" by Schiffer.
