I am selling this Babylonian Cuneiform Tablet which I have had in my possession since January 2004. It was purchased from Ken Martins of Museum Surplus as can be seen from the scan of the Certificate of Authenticity which I've included in the photos. I have since had it translated through the Cuneiform translation services provided by Bron at"Collector-Antiquities" and have copied and pasted the translation and transliteration below. The size of the tablet is 12cmx6.5cm. Which is quite large and rare. I have included several photos of the front and back of the tablet. Cuneiform, first used by the ancient peoples of the Near East over 5000 years ago, is composed of a series of wedge-shaped incisions made with a sharpened reed stylus. This script was adopted by all the major civilizations of Mesopotamia for recording their distinct languages, including the Sumerians, Akkadians, Assyrians, and Babylonians. Clay tablets were the preferred media for everyday writing because they could either be easily recycled or, if a permanent record was required, fired in a kiln and preserved. The earliest recorded inscriptions are not myths of histories, but rather banal economic ... moretransactions and accounting documents. Later, one of the most famous written works of the ancient world, Hammurabi’s code, was recorded in the cuneiform script. While these marks may appear obscure and mysterious to our eyes, scholars have made much progress in deciphering cuneiform after discovering inscriptions on the Behistun Rock, a cliff in western Iran. Much like the Rosetta Stone, the Behistun Inscription contained the same text written in three different languages(Persian, Babylonian, and Elamite) all of which utilized the cuneiform system of writing. A well provenanced ancient pottery vessel from the Persian Empire. Dating to approximately the 1st millennium B.C. A pale pinkish red vessel of dual bodied form. Consisting of two connected globular jars, each with looped and molded handles, slender cylindrical necks and everted mouths, and two outwards sloping feet. About The Assyrians The term LURISTAN references artifacts made by a society of semi-nomadic people that once lived in the mountainous region of Northwest Iran. Little is known of this ancient culture but the most impressive traces are that of the bronze artifacts they left behind that can be found in parts of present-day Turkey. Iran and Afghanistan. These include highly decorative equipment for their horses, ceremonial containers and numerous weapons ranging from simple utilitarian pieces on up to elaborate masterpieces of warfare. An unusual Syro-Hittite pottery beaker. Dating to the early 2nd Millennium B.C. This piece sits on a disc-like base with acorn-shaped body and flaring mouth. What makes the piece most unusual are the four applied"masks" that decorate the shoulder of the vessel. They have a distinctive zoomorphic appearance. Especially when viewed in the inverted position, and are perforated longitudinally. Thus, it is possible that the vessel would have been suspended by means of a cord that passed through these perforations. This piece belongs to one of the world's earliest Empires. It measures 2.5" tall and 2.75" wide. It is guaranteed authentic, and is in excellent condition. The piece is complete, but appears to has a small casting error where thr rounded"ball" on the back of on horse's head is missing. Otherwise, the piece is complete, and free of issues. The patina is original, and a fine mix of bronze tones, green verdegris, and oxidation. It is hand-chased around the neck, and eyes. This beautiful object which would have been worn as an amulet. The double-headed horses serving to keep watch in both directions. The horse was domesticated in the Near East from the third millennium BC, and the profusion of horse bronzes in Luristan speaks of its important place in that society. I've been told it could have come from any number of places, all of which are in the Near& Middle eastern areas. Jug stands approx. 14"tall without chains. 2"diameter at mouth of jug, 7"diameter at bottom of jug. The chains and hook add about 10" It weighs approx. 3-4 bs, it's quite heavy. During my travels. About 40 yrs ago, I came across this ewer being sold. It is from the 1100- 1400 A.D. era, possibly older. There is a hanging chain with a sharp hook to hold it over the fire& to hang on to whatever was porting it: Camel. Gypsy wagon, Tinkers van, who knows? I wish it could talk! There is a wonderful dark copper patina on it. I've left it on so as to not take away from its character. I'm ... morequite sure that if you use a little elbow grease& polish, it would shine, if desired. The coolest part about is that there is a tube that suspends into the jug. I was told that it could hold coals to keep the drink hot or. More rarely, ice to chill the drink. This vessel does not leak. It's been very well made and cared for. The 4 props that hold the tube suspended have had a slight wardrobe malfunction- two of the props dropped off and exposed the fact that it was broke. It was like that when I received it. It is still 100% functional. I can personally attest that it still works the way it was intended. I used it in the days when you could bring what you wanted to all the rock concerts! At that point the hook was in my jeans belt. Works well. Just as good as the portable sport bottles. Just with a little more flair. It was used for wine. Water, wine, coffee, wine, tea, wine, milk. There are hand tooled designs around it and would be a great addition to any collection of antiquities. The chains& the hook are hand forged wrought iron. She was an unusually large three-masted Chinese ocean-going junk laden with a large cargo of porcelain goods; which sank on February 6th 1822 in an area of the South China Sea known as the ... moreBelvidere Shoals. This Chinese ocean-going junk was part of a tradition leading back to the days of the legendary Treasure Ships. Sailing from the port of Amoy(now Xiamen in Fujian) the Tek Sing was bound for Batavia; Dutch East Indies(now Jakarta; Indonesia) After a month of sailing captain; Lo Tauko; decided to take a shortcut through the Gaspar Straight between the Bangka-Belitung Islands; and ran aground on a reef. Approximately 2000 people were on board when she sank with a loss of life greater than that of the Titanic. The Tek Sing sank in about 100 feet of water. The Tek Sing wreck was discovered by marine salvor Michael Hatcher on May 12th 1999; in an area of the South China Sea north of Java; east of Sumatra and south of Singapore. A triangular-bladed dagger with rounded shoulders and a subtle midrib to the blade. The hilt is cast with lateral flanges which contained an organic inset grip on both faces and an elliptical pommel flange. At the upper end of the blade is a crescentic rib flanking the midrib. 13/ 14th Century Islamic/ Syrian Bearded Figure Copper/ Bronze Oil Lamp This is a Medieval period. Bronze or copper oil lamp in the form of a bearded figure. It is partly patinated on the exterior, the interior is completely patinated. I believe it has been cleaned& polished in the past removing a large part of the verdigris. There is a heavily worn scrolling pattern to the base. Probably Syrian. I have no doubt that it is genuine CONDITION See photos.
