Marcus Aurelius: Meditations(Unabridged) Edited by William Kaufman. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 99 pages. Publisher: Dover Publications. Inc; 1997) ISBN: ... more048629823X. One of the world’s most famous and influential books. Meditations” by the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius(121-180 A.D. incorporates the stoic percepts he used to cope with his life as a warrior and administrator of an empire. Ascending to the imperial throne in 161 AD, Aurelius found his reign beset by natural disasters and war. In the wake of these challenges, he set down a series of private reflections, outlining a philosophy of commitment to virtue above pleasure and tranquility above happiness. Reflecting the emperor’s own noble and self-sacrificing code of conduct. This eloquent and moving work draws and enriches the tradition of Stoicism, which stressed the search for inner peace and ethical certainty in an apparently chaotic world. Serenity was to be achieved by emulating in one’s personal conduct the underlying orderliness and lawfulness of nature. And in the face of the inevitable pain, loss, and death; the suffering at the core of life, Aurelius counsels stoic detachment from the things that are beyond one’s control, and a focus on one’s own will and perception. Presented here in a specially modernized version of this classic George Long translation. This updated and revised edition is easily accessible to contemporary readers. It not only provides a fascinating glimpse into the mind and personality of a highly principled Roman of the second century, but also offers today’s readers a practical and inspirational guide to the challenges of everyday life. CONDITION: New. Never read. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. Antique Genuine Natural Russian One-Half Carat Antique Multi-Colored Oval Cut Tourmaline. CLASSIFICATION: Handcrafted Pink Tourmaline Oval Cabochon. ORIGIN: The Ural Mountains. Russia. 18th Century. SIZE: Length: 6mm. Width: 5mm. Depth: 2mm. All measurements approximate. WEIGHT: 0.56 carats. NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: Tourmaline occurred in many of the ancient mines that yielded precious gemstones in the ancient Roman world 2.000 years ago, however it was mistaken for(and thus called) emerald or topaz. The name“tourmaline” came from the Celanese word"turmali, which means"mixed" Bright rainbow collections of gemstone varieties were called"turmali" parcels. Here's a very vibrantly hued, almost"neon" pink hand crafted ... moretourmaline cabochon round from the Southern Urals of Russia. Hand crafted by an 18th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. Originally used in indigenous jewelry, this is a very beautiful and valuable semi-precious gemstone. Pink tourmaline is rather uncommon, probably the most valuable of the ordinary varieties of tourmaline. There is substantially more demand than supply, so thus oftentimes can be quite costly. The color of this specimen is a very rich and saturated, almost"neon" pink. Pink tourmaline was held in such high regard by the(last) Empress of China, Tz'u Hsi, that she purchased bought almost a ton of it from a mine in California, and was eventually laid to rest(eternally) on a carved tourmaline pillow. In fact, many of the Russian crown jewels are tourmaline. In the Victorian Age tourmaline was enormously popular not only in Russia, but throughout 18th and 19th century Europe. However much favored tourmaline was by European Renaissance and Victorian Royalty. Tourmaline tends to be characterized by the presence of small
Herculaneum Pompeii Mount Vesuvius Buried Intact Treasure Ancient Rome 79AD Pix
The Town of Hercules: A Buried Treasure-Trove by Joseph Jay Deiss. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with Dust Jacket: 183 pages. Publisher: Houghton Mifflin; 1974) ISBN: 0395185165. It was a sunny. Cloudless August morning and the people of Herculaneum were going about their usual round of activities. In various parts of the town workmen plied their trades. Cabinet makers hammered and sawed, bakers baked their loaves of bread, cloth-makers dyed and pressed their cloth. The streets were filled with people, and shopkeepers hawked their wares: snacks both hot and cold, glassware, vegetables, pots and jewelry. Inside most of the houses lunch was being prepared. Suddenly a violent, cracking sound filled the air. From a mountaintop a vast mushroom cloud billowed into the sky. Within a short time the city of Herculaneum would be lost to history for almost ... moretwo thousand years. Like its sister city Pompeii on the Bay of Naples. Herculaneum was buried by the great eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Unlike Pompeii, smothered in hot ashes, Herculaneum was smothered under a river of hot mud. The mud slowly cooled and hardened. Herculaneum, buried at depths ranging from sixty-five and ninety-five feet, was preserved as if in plastic- a treasure-trove for rediscovery many centuries later. In this story, Author Joseph Deiss tells of that rediscovery, the years of painstaking archaeological work that went into digging out this fascinating city. From its well-preserved remains it is possible to virtually reconstruct the life that went on there. And Mr. Deiss has done so admirably with words and over ninety photographs, many of which have never before been published. CONDITION: Unblemished except moderate edge+corner shelf wear to dustjacket. Including a few tiny, neatly mended closed edge tears. Dustjacket is actually very clean and presentable, but after 30+ years it simply shows a modest amount of shelfwear. The book itself is"new" in the sense it is clearly unread. Pages are crisp, clean, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound,

Ancient Rome: Chronicles of the Roman World by Timothy R. Roberts. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 176 pages. Publisher: Metro Books; 2000) ISBN: 1567997244. A huge. 12½ x 11 inch sumptuously illustrated history] Rediscover the glory that was ancient Rome, the civilization that gave the western world much of its government, architecture, art and literature, in this lavishly illustrated history by Timothy R. Roberts, who recounts with verve and insight the chronicles of one of the most influential eras of all time. Situated on the banks of the Tiber, surrounded by the famed seven hills, ancient Rome was the center of the western world for centuries. Within a quarter century of its fou8nding by Romulus in 753 B.C. Rome’s citizens established a republic, which gave its people unprecedented rights and privileges. Over the next several ... morecenturies Rome also developed a taste for conquest; its dominion gradually extended throughout much of the European continent and into northern Africa. Ironically Rome’s might overpowered its own government, and republic yielded to empire. The glory days of the Roman Empire would last well into the fourth century A.D. and long after its inevitable decline and fall, Rome’s legacy lives on. This lively history brings each aspect of ancient Rome to life for the modern reader. From the great leaders, and from the artists whose works are still studied today to the daily lives of ordinary citizens. Here too are explanations of the formidable achievements in law, engineering, architecture, government, literature, and philosophy that ensure that the legacy of ancient Rome will live on forever. Ancient Rome” features stunning photographs of architectural and artistic treasures, plus colorful maps that depict the varying parameters of the Roman Empire though its many phases of conquest. In addition a timeline highlighting the most significant events in the history of the Empire provides an overview of the period. A richly illustrated and absorbing account, Ancient Rome” presents a

The Greeks and Romans used citrine for intaglios and in jewelry as well during the first and second centuries. And believed that citrine was the crystallized essence of sunshine. Citrine was also believed to aid in digestion and cleanse toxins from the body, and it was even carried as protection against snake venom. The gemstone was regarded as sacred to the healing deities Apollo(God of Health) and his son, Aesclepius(God of Healing) Since trade in the first centuries AD was brisk between the Romans and India, it's very likely that the Romans got their stones from southern India, an area not only rich in gems but also a major bead lapidary center. Here’s a large, very clean, golden yellow oval citrine which originated in the Devonian lava beds found along the coast of Angus Country, Scotland. The gemstone was hand crafted and finished by an eighteenth century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval,

Worn as a talisman, the Romans believed that opal had to power to cure disease, and also considered opal to be a token of hope and purity. The Roman scholar and historian Pliny(23-79 A.D. in his 37-volume work, Historia Naturalis" described opal as having"the fire of the garnet, the brilliant purple of the amethyst, and the sea-green of the emerald all shining together in incredible union" Here are two absolutely gorgeous. Technique Ancient Jewelry Indiana University Art Museum
A Golden Legacy: Ancient Jewelry from the Burton Y. Berry Collection at the Indiana University Art Museum by Wolf Rudolph. With an Essay by Barbara Deppert. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 332 pages. Publisher: Indiana University Art Museum; 1995) ISBN: 0253209137. Published at $39.99] Jewelry is a necessary luxury. With costly materials and labor-intensive manufacture which establish it as extraordinary and sumptuous. Its nearly universal function as a commemoration of important passages, most notably engagements and weddings, deems it a necessity, even among the most austere of human beings. The urge to enhance our basic appearance with jewelry has evidently been part of human nature since our earliest beginnings. Thus the jewelry that survives, even from the most ancient of cultures, offers fascinating insights into our common humanity. For this ... moreand many other reasons, the vast holdings of ancient jewelry bequeathed by Burton Berry to the Indiana University Art Museum are most significant. Ambassador Berry was an indefatigable collector who assembled a remarkable collection tracing ancient jewelry from its beginnings in the Chalcolithic era to the early Christian and Byzantine ages. The collection tells us much about changing ideas. Technologies, and tastes which shaped and reshaped the ways in which gold and silver, gems and stones, were used to make adornments. In addition, the sampling presented within this text, assembled out of his collection, provides some fascinating glimpses beyond the traditional inner circle of Greene and Rome. The jewelry presented takes the reader to the outposts of the ancient world. To Anatolia and the Balkans, to Iraq and the Levant, which though far-flung, were nevertheless active and vital parts of the ancient cosmos. In a way, these distant places are even more fascinating than the heartland, as they combine native traditions and vigor with colonial and imperial styles and aesthetics. Because Burton Berry collected on the“edges” of the ancient Classical world, and because he was

Such good quality blue sapphires are in high demand, and can be quite costly. Unfortunately most seemingly flawless, transparent, bright blue colored"sapphires" sold even by the largest and most reputable retailers in the United States are synthetic(read the fine print; and the same is true of emeralds and rubies) However the Southern Ural Mountains of Russia have been producing good quality, natural sapphires for centuries. Mounted onto plaque or shadow box upon request(additional shipping charges apply) ATTRIBUTION: Eastern Roman Empire(Thracia) 1st Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Outside Diameter: 67 x 62 millimeters. Inside Diameter: 58 x 55 millimeters. Band Width: 6 millimeters at the top; 4 millimeters at the bottom. Band Thickness: 5 millimeters at the top; 4 millimeters at the bottom. Opening: 8 millimeters. Weight: 23.14 grams. CONDITION: Good. Intact of sound integrity. Moderate porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: A well preserved. Though very simple Roman bronze bracelet circa 1st century AD. It would fit a woman of light to medium build, and with that caveat, is completely ... moreand eminently wearable. The bracelet was recovered unbroken and intact. As is ordinarily the case, the artifact exhibits moderate porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in earth) Unlike so many smaller bronze artifacts which are completely disfigured by corrosion, this particular piece happened to come to rest in fairly gentle soil conditions. The consequence is that though you can see upon close scrutiny clear evidence that this bracelet spent millennia buried beneath the ground, nonetheless to casual examination it is quite pleasant, with the rich, warm glow of ancient bronze. You can clearly see. Of course, a series of shallow scallops caused by corrosive soil conditions. Naturally in these photo enlargements these blemishes are quite distinct. The effect is not unappealing– it looks quite a bit like the nugget style bracelets which were so wildly popular in the USA in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Despite the moderate porosity, the bracelet remains intact and wearable. And hand, to the casual observer, it simply appears a nicely toned bronze bracelet. However undeniably it bears the scars of having spent almost two thousand years in fairly corrosive soil cond

Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: A gorgeous and vibrantly colored star sapphire precious gemstone from Mogok. Burma. This particular specimen is a beautiful violet color with blue undertones– depending on whether the light is white(outdoors) or yellow, it will vary between violet and violet-blue in color. It is quite striking, very handsome and gentle in tone, the color very soft and understated, the star quite beautiful. The gemstone was hand shaped ... moreand polished into this very beautiful oval cabochon by a 19th century Russian artisan for use in domestic jewelry. The result is an exquisite and incredibly richly colored precious gemstone with lots of depth and gorgeous tone. It is not a flawless gemstone. Of course it is the alignment of included material which creates the star– so star sapphires always have included material. The question is, how noticeable? With this particular specimen to casual scrutiny it simply appears to be a beautiful, unblemished star sapphire. However close inspection will reveal a few variations in the tone and a few internal blemishes. Of course here in these photo enlargements these blemishes are quite obvious. But in hand, life-size, they simply are not discerned when casually viewed. It is only when you examine it very carefully that you will notice some color zoning and a minor flaw or two. Of course, the same can be said of most sapphires in general, and particularly star sapphires. Color zoning is quite common in sapphires, and unless very obvious, is generally not seriously detrimental. Known as a"star" sapphire because of an optical effect known as an"asterism" orie

DETAIL: Hand crafted by a 19th century Russian artisan. Part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian ... moreRussia. Originally used in indigenous jewelry, this is a very pretty precious gemstone, tourmaline occurred in many of the ancient mines that yielded precious gemstones in the ancient Roman world 2,000 years ago, however it was mistaken for(and thus called) emerald or topaz. The name“tourmaline” came from the Celanese word"turmali, which means"mixed" Bright rainbow collections of gemstone varieties were called"turmali" parcels. You’ll likely never, ever see a gemstone as unique as this. A large brightly colored and textured tourmaline gemstone from Siberia, the Ural Mountains of Russia. Very handsome and quite exceptional in character, this striking gemstone was hand shaped and polished into this very beautiful oval cut cabochon by an 18th century Russian artisan. This lustrous semi-precious gemstone possesses a bright and colorful character. It is a nice quality tourmaline by 18th century standards. The gemstone would be more or less transparent except for the fact that it is so thick. Given the thick cut, it is more toward translucent than transparent. By today’s standards it is not a high quality tourmaline– though its origin makes it nonetheless e

CONDITION: Very good. Sound integrity. Minor scratches and scuffs consistent with use and then burial in soil. One chip. DETAIL: This is a nicely preserved genuine carnelian gemstone hand-carved and finished into a bead/pendant sometime in the 1st century A.D. in Roman Provincial Thracia. As you can see. It is a rather uncommon pendant; a highly polished, tapered octagonal tube. One can almost imagine a bored artisan, tired of the same old faceted or polished sphere, trying his hand at something new, anything other than the typical polished or faceted sphere so common to the Roman world of the first century. As can be seen, a portion of the pendant was chipped off one end. Probably while worn by the original Roman citizen who owned it, it was damaged, most likely by being dropped or being dashed against something. Really, the little bit of damage does not detract from its beauty, it really only reinforces its authenticity and antiquity. Carnelian gemstones and jewelry were very popular throughout the Roman Empire. And carnelian was widely used to carve cameos and signet/intaglio rings. Since bef

Agate is probably named after its ancient source. The Achates River in Sicily, though some ancient historians believe that the word agate is derived from the Greek word"Agateес" meaning happy. ... moreA famous collection of four thousand agate bowls was accumulated by Mithradates, king of Pontus(an area along the Black Sea of present-day Turkey which was colonized by Hellenic Greeks) is illustrative of the high value the ancient world had for agate. Agate bowls were also popular in the Byzantine Empire, and vast collections of agate bowls became common among European royalty during the Renaissance. Hand-shaped into a tapered oblong and drilled for use as a pendant circa 1st century in the Roman Province of Thracia(present-day Bulgaria and Serbia) This piece is a genuine banded agate gemstone. It is in good condition, not cracked, chipped, broken or repaired. Of course, it was buried for almost two thousand years, so there are minor scratches and scuffs. Agate gemstones like this one were extremely popular throughout the Roman Empire and earlier the Greeks, Phoenicians, Sumerians and Egyptians fashioned adornments from agate. Archeology suggests that quartz agate was favored in this way as long as 10,000 years ago. Agates were formed millions of years ago when gas bubbles occurred in volcanic rocks or lava. Silica laden water seeped into the bubbles, coagulated into a gel a

The style, which was also very popular in earrings, is known as a“leech” style for obvious reasons(fat in the middle, narrowed at the ends, the shape does resemble a leech) The bracelet is fairly large and would fit a lady of slender to medium build, and with that caveat, is completely and eminently wearable. The bracelet was recovered unbroken and intact. As is ordinarily the case, the artifact exhibits some porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in earth) Unlike so many smaller bronze artifacts which are completely disfigured by corrosion, this particular piece happened to come to rest in reasonably gentle soil conditions. The degree of porosity is relatively moderate– noticeable but not to the extent where the artifact’s integrity is adversely affected. Of course in these photo enlargements the porosity is more pronounced– under magnification the evidence that this bracelet spent millennia buried beneath the ground unmistakable. Tourmaline was found in all colors because it traveled along a rainbow and gathered all the rainbow's ... morecolors. In fact the name tourmaline comes from the Dutch traders who purchased gemstones from the Celanese(i.e. Ceylon or Sri Lanka) The word"turmali, meant"mixed" and the bright rainbow collections of gemstone varieties which the Dutch purchased were called"turmali" parcels. Here's an extraordinarily colored blue-green(aquamarine" 18th century Siberian tourmaline, hand cut into an oval cabochon and possessed of breathtaking hue and luster. The Southern Ural Mountains of Siberia have been producing quality tourmaline for centuries. Though by today’s standards not of exceptionally high quality, it is translucent and of vibrant color. In its time however, it was doubtless highly prized, though under magnification and close scrutiny it evidences numerous forgivable sins considering its age and the fact that it is hand cut and polished. Here, it is magnified 300 percent, so as stated every flaw simply screams its nature, though to the casual observer such blemishes are minimal. One arm resting on chair with a scepter or“hasta pura” in the crook of her arm, other arm outstretched in front of her holding a patera. ATTRIBUTION: City of Rome Mint sometime in 196 or 197A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Diameter: 17 millimeters. Weight: 2.68 grams. DETAIL: This is a very handsome and very uncommon silver denarius produced in the city of Rome itself in 196 or 197 A.D. It is in very good condition. Only very modest wear from circulation in ancient Rome. It was well struck both front and back on a planchet(blank coin) which was just a little undersized(not at all uncommon) though the coin is of better than average weight for the era. The net result is that on both the obverse side of the coin a few of the Latin characters in the legend are slightly truncated(not missing, merely that a portion of the top of the letters are off the edge of the coin) and on the reverse side of the coin, the Latin characters making up the first half of the legend are severely truncated(in some cases almost entirely chopped off, struck off the edge of the flan. Naturally inasmuch as these coins were produced by hand. And it is the rule, not the exception, to find them struck off-center, on irregular, undersized planchets(blanks) and consequentially missing portions of the legends and/or themes(depictions) All of these characteristics

CONDITION: Very good. Completely intact, moderately light wear, very light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: A substantial. Well constructed Roman bronze band with very masculine and handsome features. The construction is that of a simple band clearly cut from flat bronze stock, it has the look of hammered bronze. Obviously as you can see it is a little more than ... morea simple band, as it does incorporate a large oval bezel, all part of the same piece of bronze. It also features overlapping bands at the back, which at the time it was created would have formed an“adjustable” ring. However ancient metal tends to crystallize and become inflexible, and though the ring was“adjustable” when it was originally created, fifteen or sixteen centuries later the ring size is pretty much fixed, there’s little“flex” left in the bronze bands. Very simple. Rather uncommon to the time, the ring remains in very good condition. Rather than the more archaic style of producing band and bezel separately and then attaching them together, this ring is constructed of a single piece of bronze, albeit cut from flat, hammered bronze sheet rather than molded from molten bronze. In a way, this accentuates the ring’s timeless design and modern flavor. There are clear indications that the ring was worn during an ancient lifetime long past. However this should not be a source for disappointment. You must keep in mind that the ring was produced by an artisan and sold to a patron or consumer with the idea that the ring would be enjoyed and worn by the

In addition to the quite fancy six-sided bezel, you might notice that the perimeter of the bezel is accentuated with a punch-dot border as well. The punch-dot technique was already thousands of years old, used in Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Minoan Crete millennia earlier as a decorative element on items of personal adornment. The ring was not actually recovered with the gemstone intact, however usually this style of bronze ring was set either with a glass gemstone(glass was quite costly) or with some form of quartz crystal; i.e. clear quartz(rock crystal” orange quartz(carnelian” or purple quartz(amethyst” or oftentimes lapis lazuli. Of course ... moreno-one would have mistaken it for a gemstone ring, but this type of“faux gemstone” style ring was very popular in ancient Rome, even into Middle Ages Byzantium. The construction is of the more archaic style, characteristically made in two pieces; an incomplete ring(a“shank” with a separately crafted bezel which was brazed to the shank in order to assemble the ring. This as opposed to the more modern style of construction prevalent in the following centuries whereby the bands and bezel are integrated(fashioned from a single piece of metal) The ring evidences light wear. Nothing particularly heavy, however the bands were mangled a bit due to the soil pressure exerted on the ring during the thousand years it was buried. If desired, the ring could be heated and the bands“tweaked” however generally it is better just to leave well enough alone. Though the bands are slightly misshapen, the ring“wears” quite nicely. The fact that the ring evidences some degree of wear from ancient usage should not, however, be a source of disappointment. Prior to the beginning of the second millennium B.C. the gemstones would reached the Mediterranean either via the Silk Route(if overland) or if by sea, they would have crossed the Arabian and Red Sea by ship, then overland to Alexandria in Egypt, before being distributed by trade across and around the Mediterranean. Roman green glass unguent or oil bottle of fairly sizeable dimensions. Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1 ½ ... moreand 3 inches in size. These small jars, pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles and flasks were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. In fact whatever the Romans had produced in clay in the first and second centuries B.C. was by the first and second centuries A.D. more commonly produced in glass. However the larger pieces of glass are rarely found intact. The Romans for instance produced fluted, engraved, multi-tiered, and cut glass bowls of fantastic quality and design– and only a few intact specimens have ever been recovered intact. In fact even the smaller pieces such as this are rarely recovered intact except as grave goods. This piece as you can see has a fairly well-formed and defined lip. And a neck beneath slightly tapered neck– overall a somewhat primitive specimen. Normally this would have been used to dispense aromatic oils or other unguents. Possessing a very pleasing green color, this bottle is probably amongst the earlier Roman

Overall only moderately light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) except for one“hot spot” corroded hole in band. Professionally conserved. DETAIL: An exceptionally heavy. Massively constructed, very well preserved bronze ring circa 4th century A.D. As you can see, the ... morering is very bold, handsome, and elegant in design. The"bezel" or face of the ring is engraved with a classical starburst design accentuated with hash marks on sculpted shouldered bands. Not a terribly uncommon theme for the time, but very well executed. Starburst themes of one variety or another were a very popular geometric design during the first few centuries A.D. This particular depiction is quite characteristic of the era except for rather uncommon crosshatched lines which connect the four arms of the starburst; forming a peripheral diamond border to the bezel’s circumference. All of the engraving exhibits very fine workmanship, and is mostly intact– though it is obvious that the ring was worn in life. The ring is very heavily constructed and weighs several times as much as most similar rings of the era. There is a very modest amount of wear evidenced. Though clearly it was worn in ancient times. The amount of wear is not excessive and is not discernible except upon close scrutiny. The extent of this wear is more evident on the bands than on the bezel. The ring possesses the gorgeous, medium tone so characteristic of ancient bronze. There

NEW Ancient Roman Civilization Daily Life Law Literature Art Science Technology
The Romans: An Introduction to Their History and Civilization by Karl Christ. Translated from the German by Christopher Holme. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 294 pages. Publisher: University of California; 1985) Roman civilization is one of the bases of the modern world. The extraordinary achievements of Rome- political. Military, cultural- and its dramatic, thousand-year history, during which it grew to dominate the whole world of classical antiquity before being overwhelmed in its turn, have been continuously studied and variously interpreted ever since. Rome has been commended for its administration, praised for its system of justice, admired for its arts and technology, extolled for its"virtues, such as love, freedom, independence, discipline, courage, and austerity. It has also been condemned for its aggression, its exploitation of slaves, ... moreits excesses, and the decadence that led to its decline. But such was Rome's impact, and so remarkable was the empire it built, that its influence has never ceased to be felt. Whether as a model of political power. Of moral behavior, or of social control, Rome, with its splendors and triumphs, its failings and disasters, is an inexhaustible quarry for the lessons that its history offers and the legacies that it has bequeathed. Karl Christ conveys the essence of this vital Roman tradition with a coherence and compact precision that few scholars, if any, have been able to achieve. Following the main chronological developments of Roman history, he combines the necessary minimum of political and military narrative with lucid social and economic analysis, separate chapters on Roman ways of life and law, and wide-ranging coverage of literature, art, science, technology, and religion. With maps and photographs as well as a specially prepared bibliography for further reading, The Romans" is the most up-to-date, authoritative and comprehensive single-volume introduction to the history and civilization of Ancient Rome. Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1 ½ and 3 inches in size. This specimen ... moreis over 3 inches tall! It possesses a heavy(albeit patchy) iridescent burial patina which is silver in color with plays of green. Blue, pink and purple. Though you can see some of the original green-colored glass peeking out, the silver iridescent covering is quite striking, very beautiful, and relatively uncommon. These small jars, pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles, jars and flasks were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. The Romans for instance produced fluted. The Greeks and Romans are known to have worn sapphires from Ceylon, as described by writers from those times. In the world of the ancient Mediterranean(including the Greeks, Romans, Persians, Hebrews, and the various Indo-European Celtic ... moretribes) priests and sorcerers honored the sapphire above all other gems, believing that sapphire enabled them to interpret oracles and foretell the future. Here's a gorgeous, vibrantly colored natural red rose sapphire precious gemstone from the Southern Ural Mountains of Siberia, Russia. The gemstone was hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. The color is absolutely magnificent- a bright, almost neon red with rose-orange undertones. The color is popularly known as"padparadsha" red, and both the intense hue and the fiery sparkle are remarkable. The color is quite exquisite, the sparkle diamond-like in intensity. The gemstone is to the eye without blemish. That is not to say it is flawless, as in these 600% photo enlargements you can see a couple of minute blemishes. Tourmaline was correctly identified and described in the ancient world by Theophrastus of Ancient Greece(student and successor of Plato and Aristotle) in 314 B.C. The name“tourmaline” came from the Celanese word"turmali, ... morewhich means"mixed" Bright rainbow collections of gemstone varieties were called"turmali" parcels. In ancient mythology, tourmaline was found in all colors because it traveled along a rainbow and gathered all the rainbow's colors. Here’s a beautiful, richly textured dark“cognac amber” colored tourmaline gemstone from Siberia, the Ural Mountains of Russia. Richly hued, this gemstone was hand crafted and finished by an 18th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. Though by contemporary standards it would not be considered a high-quality gemstone, by eighteenth century standards it is a very nice gemstone, quite typical of antique, handcrafted Siberian tourmaline of the era. Despite its shortcomings, it is nonetheless very beautiful. The gemstone is clearly not even remotely near flawless. It possesses quite a lot of seamed colorless crystalline material scattered through the gemstone. These crystalline blemishes are not obnoxious. Thus some sort of protection against such an event was considered by many imperative. The concentric circle design. Affording protection to the wearer from the"evil eye" was increasing adopted by and associated with those of the ancient Christian faith. So much so that even though the symbolism of the concentric circles arose from more ancient times, by the 3rd century A.D. concentric circles were increasingly associated with and regarded as being exclusively an expression of Christianity. It seems unlikely however that this oil lamp was intended to make any statement of Christianity, as this specific portrayal of the"evil eye" theme is quite pagan in character, and it would not be for a few centuries until this symbol eventually came to be tho

For over 6,000 years, through the ancient civilizations of ancient Sumeria and Babylon, through ancient Greece, the Roman Empire, and into contemporary times, the rich orange glow of carnelian has made it one of the most popular natural gemstones in the history of jewelry. Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons; 1955) This is the story of the vanished race which for nearly 400 years. Until the rise of Rome in the fifth century B.C. exercised power over Central Italy and the Mediterranean. Everything about the Etruscans is mysterious. The Romans, their successors in dominion over Italy, sought systematically to delete all trace of them from the face of the earth. Superficially the attempt almost succeeded, for it was not until two centuries ago that archaeology began effectively to restore the Etruscans to history. But in reality the attempt was always doomed to failure because, as this book sets out to show, the soil of ... moreEtruria was so steeped in the spirit of the Etruscans that their influence was never extinct or even dormant, least of all among their conquerors, the Romans themselves. Frau Sibylle von Cles-Reden. A trained archaeologist, describes the Etruscan sites and brings them back to life with the imagination of an artist. Each major site in turn: Caere, Vulci, Clusium, Volsinium and the rest, is seen to represent one or another of the major fields of Etruscan achievement: pottery or sculpture, painting or architecture, religion or the Etruscan way of life. Each leads her in turn to a fascinatingly discursive account of a different aspect of Etruscan history, in which her sensitive awareness of the continuity of the race and the timeless quality of their native landscape is matched by a large number of magnificent photographs. The Etruscan mystery has never been more sympathetically evoked, nor more nearly unraveled. CONDITION: Modestly used. Clean. Pages are unmarked, no notes or highlighting, unmutilated, remaining well bound. Cloth covers are clean. Dustjacket shows only modest edge and corner shelfwear, one small 3/4 inch edge tear(neatly mended) at the top edge of the front side,
