ROMAN FIGURAL BRONZE AMULET OR APPLIQUE 1ST / 2ND CENTURY AD TUCSON ESTATE
Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge From the Tucson estate of a collector some years ago is this visually charismatic Roman provincial figural bronze votive amulet or appliqué. A genuinely ancient I believe circa 1st/ 2nd Century AD proposition. The portrait of devotion is conceived as the head and upper torso of some diety, though which one is beyond me.he holds a club or sword, which may provide some clue. Whatever the original purpose, the figure was crafted within the prevailing aesthetic and with enough detail to convey an unmistakeable recognition among the common citizenry of the Empire. That said and for those who know the genre and understand the significance of these bronze depictions, the offered example needs no further descriptors. For those ... morewho don't, I guarantee this is a real antiquity. Weight is about 20.6 grams on my portable digital scale. This was in a box with some Roman glass gaming counters in the estate. Condition is quite fine with a deep patination to the bronze surfaces, that come by honestly from loss and burial in ancient times. Some hardened earthen deposits to verso also speak to the history and are here simply more evidence of the real thing. Size is about 1 11/6 in. or 43 mm high. If you collect the material culture of ancient Rome and especially these charismatic icons of Roman popular art, or simply wish this single improvement the ambiance of a cabinet in your home, this will have great meaning for you. Ancient artefacts are finite. Less are being discovered as time passes, and of course at some point in the future there will be no more. The quantity and availability of these ancient historic pieces is ever decreasing as collectors and museums purchase these objects and take them permanently off the market. Consequently, investment in antiquities is rising. Of ... morecourse there are few of us who can afford to bid millions on objects like the Guennol Lioness, but, as availability decreases across the whole spectrum of ancient artefacts, investment is proving to be provident and wise, and most of all, for the sheer pleasure of owning a piece of ancient history.
