The plate has a diameter of about 92 mm and is richly engraved with an orthodox cross in the center and Russian text surrounding it. In antique condition. Gold plating/ gilting is worn off but this is normal due to age of this piece. Hallmarked with Imperial Russian 84 silver mark as well as Master mark initials in Russian. It consists of a series of 9 filigreed florettes, each accented with a cultured pearl central accent. After more than a century of use, there is one damaged florette on the middle right hand side. The particles of the Cross are overlaid and mounted on a cruciform white parchment or vellum field. Surrounded by gold wirework, also in cruciform, against a red silk background. The reliquary is a polished brass 2 piece reliquary thats gold in color. The back cover has a beautiful rendering of the Virgin Mary of the Miraculous Medal. I date this relic to about 1878-1880. The relic measures about 1 1/8' long. And about 7/8" wide. The condition is excellent. The back displays the Franciscan red seal in wax of Jesus' arm and Saint Francis' arm, crossed. This is a relic of the True Cross. Vraixe Croix, Vera Cruz. It is set in a theca hallmarked 2xs with French Sterling Silver marks.the boar's head and another. The wax seal and threads are perfect. The seal has a perfect bishops/cardinal's hat. The tassels and a shield with various markings. The reliquary has 3 threads. It measures 7/8" x 5/8" excluding the bail. MULTI Relic Reliquary HOLY SPONGE of Jesus Passion on Cross & HOLY SEPHULCHRE
Hi. This is a very very special multi reliquary from Italy. Circa 1740-1770. The most important and rare relic is from the SPONGE that the Roman soldier used to give Jesus vinegar and gall during the crucifixion, after Jesus said"I thirst. The account of Jesus receiving a sponge soaked in vinegar or sour wine while on the cross appears in all four of the gospels, Mark 15:35-36, Mathhew 27:47-48, Luke 23:36-37 and John 19:28-30. Most bible scholars consider this an act of mercy on the part of the Roman Soldier, who was not named in the bible accounts, but has been called Stephaton since before the year 600 AD. He is usually paired in art with Saint Longinus, the soldier who pierced Jesus' side with the lance. Besides the Holy Sponge.
