Up for auction I have a cute little miniature scotty dog or some type of terrier in the cold painted bronze Vienna- style. This little guy. However, was made in Japan, as embossed on his underside. I cannot make out what the maker's mark inside of the diamond shape says. This piece is about two inches long. I can get better measurements if needed. I assume it is bronze, but it could be a different metal, I am not entirely knowledgeable about types of metal. There is a loop on the dog's collar which may have held a leash or something. There is an unusual hole in the dog's mouth. Magnificent Carl Kauba Bronze- Running Indian Search Magnificent Carl Kauba Bronze– Running Indian Offered here is the well known western sculpture by Carl Kauba generally called“Running Indian” Depicting a Native American running with his braided headdress flowing behind him. The piece is beautifully balanced and has a strong sense of motion. This is one of Kauba’s most dramatic pieces and commands high prices. It was cast by several foundries, Bergmann’s among them. There are slight differences from the different founders. Almost all are missing the braids which should be attached to the headdress feathers. The elephants are done in relief so they come up off the bottom of the tray(and there is a corresponding hollow on the back of the tray) There is slight wear and residue in keeping with its age. I am unsure of the exact age of this tray and so will leave that up the experts to determine. This is a superb museum quality Austrian Vienna Bronze(Bronze de Vienne. Wiener Bronze, Cold Painted Bronze) It dates to c1900. The bronze is very possibly made by Bergmann although it is not signed. It clearly is of the highest quality of Vienna Bronzes. It features the most wonderful pair of black and red dressed elves playing on a large chair. The expressions on their faces are fantastic. The details are superb. The expressions of the faces. One of the very best Vienna Bronzes with everything we look for. The paint is in wonderful condition with minor paint loss commensurate with its age. The cats are striped with wonderful detailing throughout. The faces are superbly modeled. Antique Austrian Bronze Owl by Franz Bergmann, Vienna, jewelry box, door stop
Fabulous antique Franz Bergmann bronze of an owl resting on the book. Book opens into a jewelry box. This piece dates to early 20th century. Owl has beautiful dirty gold patina. On top of the brown book and fabulous glass eyes. Bronze Size- Height 10.5in. Base is 6in long by 4.5in wide. It is heavy- around 4.3kg(9.5lbs) It is marked Geschutzt on the bottom of the book as shown in one of the photos. It means patented in Austrian- mark common to many Bergman bronzes. I sold an owl just like this one last year that had BERG written in same location as Geschutzt. Berg is another common mark used by early bronzes- you can see a bronze dog inkwell in another listing of mine with this mark. If you have any questions. Please do not hesitate to contact me. Franz Xaver Bergmann(1861–1936) ... morewas the owner of a Viennese foundry who produced numerous patinated and cold-painted bronze Oriental. Erotic and animal figures, the latter often humanized or whimsical, humorous objects d'art. Noted for his detailed and colorful work, and signing either a'B' in an urn-shaped cartouche or'Nam Greb' Bergman' in reverse. These marks were used to disguise his identity on erotic works. His father Franz Bergmann was a professional chaser from Gablonz/Bohemia who came to Vienna and founded a small bronze factory in 1860. His son Franz Xaver Bergmann(1861– 1936) inherited the company and opened a new foundry in 1900. Many of the bronzes from the 1900s were still based on designs from his fathers workshop. He was not a sculptor himself as often described wrongfully. There were many anonymous sculptors. Hired temporarily by the workshops. At the turn of the 19th/20th Century there were about fifty workshops producing Vienna Bronzes. Cold painted bronze' refers to pieces cast in Vienna and then decorated in several layers with so called dust paint; the know-how for the mix of this kind of paint has been lost. Fabulous antique Franz Bergman bronze lamp of the resting sentinel- dating to the late 19th or the early 20th century. It has fabulous cold painted polychrome colors and it is truly stunning in person. Lamp Size- Height 19in. Base is 8in long by 5in wide. It is marked in two areas. Base is marked with Bergman amphora and signed Nam-Greb. There is also mark Austria on the bottom of the carpet. Finally. There is Bergman amphora marked on the back of the sitting sentinel- I've tried including two photos where corners of the mark can be seen between the spokes on the back of the chair. Rare Antique Bergmann ? Erotic Vienna Bronze, ‘Oriental Inkwell‘, around 1920
This Vienna Bronze from the former sample stock of the Bergmann factory in Vienna was created around 1920. It shows a quite popular erotic subject at the time. Depicting an oriental scenery. On a polychrome painted carpet the inkwell(with a glass recipient) is hidden underneath a decorated pillow that works as a lid. Further a young woman is sitting on a bench. Covering her nakedness with green draped sheet, accompanied by a man in oriental cloths. The figure is made of cold-painted white metal which was used as a surrogate material in the first years of the Vienna Bronzes as well as between the two world wars when bronze was needed otherwise.This inkwell is in good condition indicating only minor signs of age and wear. He was not a sculptor himself as often described wrongfully. There were many anonymous sculptors. Hired temporarily by the workshops. A very unusual antique. Circa 1900, Vienna cold painted bronze paperweight? The ancient Grecian form has a black hound chasing a hare on cream background, with red-orange bands. The spout neck is hollow, the body solid. Impressed marked on underside with"B" in an urn for Bergman, Geschutzt, 3572. It measures 2-1/4" tall by 3-1/2" diameter. Very good plus condition: bronze without dents, original black patina. Teeny flake here or there to the enamel, some normal crazing.
