Whittemore Beehives are quite scarce, and this one is very impressive. The brushed Cobalt Floral Is flanked by a pair of freehand"3's" The capacity is also impressed on the shoulder, just above the cobalt decoration. This is an early Whittemore Jug that dates to around 1870. The overall condition is excellent. There are some tight hairlines near the lower right side(see close-up) one travels about 3/4 into the base. There are also some typical imperfections created during manufacture(stack marks, glaze skips and drips, etc) The applied strap handle and spout are nearly flawless- there is one tiny nick on the inside rim. Please see photo set for complete details and further description. This is a fine, early example from Upstate NY that displays exceptionally in any Country or Primitive setting. This old handmade brown stoneware sidearm whiskey jug is a well taken care of vintage item from an earlier era. It shows very little wear. The stopper is much newer. Antique Stoneware: 19thC. 1 Gal. Jug w/ Primitive Cobalt Decoration, *NR*
BEAUTIFUL 1 GALLON ANTIQUE STONEWARE/COBALT JUG featuring a handsome cobalt design. Jug is approximately 12" tall and the base diameter measures 7" There are no marker's marks. The handle is in great shape. There is. However, a chip out of the jug lip(see photo) It is quite smooth so it has probably been there for many years. There are a few small chips on the front(see photos) Again, they are smooth and appear quite old. There is a very thin and tight hairline 5" crack at the back of the jug which extends on to base of the jug- about 3" The jug appears quite stable and these imperfections do not distract from its charm and beauty. I am not an expert and selling in"as-is" condition. I am downsizing and have to let go of some of my treasures. Happy bidding! No minimum.

Antique Vintage Primitive 2 Tone Salt Glaze Stoneware Jug/Lamp Hand Painted
This is a wonderful old brown top salt glazed whiskey jug measuring approximately 11 inches tall and a diameter of approximately 7 inches. The jug has no cracks but does have a few chips. 4 around the ledge of the jug, 2 of which are not that noticeable because they are located almost right on the ledge and blend in very well. The other two are just below the ledge(see picture 3) This jug also has a small hole drilled at the bottom of the back side for an electric cord(see picture 3) to be used as a lamp. The front side of the jug has an hand painted apple motif. Some of the paint has rubbed off but again does not in any way take away from the beauty of this jug and in fact would be expected for the age. The handle is perfect and the jug has had no repairs. There are some manufacturers defects(see picture 4) the most apparent which looks ... morelike a dent. I think it enhances the charm of this old jug. A beautiful jug for any collector or for decorative purposes.

Antique Primitive Beehive Stoneware Crock Jug with Bail Handle / Moonshine Jug
This is an antique primitive beehive crock jug that belonged to my Mom. It appears to be very old but does not have any markings on the bottom. The handle is bent. But appears to be the original handle. There are a few spots where the glaze did not stick to the crock when it was glazed. There is a dark spot near the top of the jug. There are also a few chips around the top and bottom edges. The jug is about 10 1/2" tall and 25" around at the widest point. PayPal only please. Primitive Antique Stoneware Jug Old estate find. This is a nice Primitive Antique Stoneware Jug with large script blue cobalt decoration. applied handle and early glaze. The cobalt writing says"J. N. Kuh& Co, Newark N. J. From what I can find out, these jugs were made by the Fulper Pottery of Flemington, NJ, for the companies whose names are written on the jugs. The script writing is quite dramatic and has a great look. The jug is in very good condition with some chips on the outside of the top rim and one shallow chip on the side of the handle- no cracks. Solid and sturdy. Otherwise, just some minor glazing flaws. Great stylish script writing on the front in a dark cobalt blue. Design is very well done. USSERY Water Valley Mississippi.This unique pottery jug still has the original piece of corn cob that was used as stopper for it and was found in an old barn just outside of Oxford back a few years ago.It will measure approximately 10 1/2 Inches tall and is still in pretty good condition it was covered in so many dirt dabbers nest when found that couldn't even see the handle of it.The name on it has worn off a good bit but you can still make out most of it. Logan(1907:176) notes that in the northwest part of Calhoun County. Along the Pittsboro-Trusty-Water Valley road, there were outcrops of white Wilcox clay, and that they were used at one time in a small hand stoneware pottery on the Ersery plantation(Logan 1909:176) Following up on this indication of economically important stoneware clay in Calhoun County, Lusk(1961:62) notes that in the late 1880s B. F. Ussery operated a small hand pottery in northwestern Calhoun County where he made stoneware pitchers, jars, churns, jugs and crude tableware from the undifferentiated upper part of the Wilcox formation, where exposures of clay are generally silty or sandy, thin and infrequent. The"last" site of Ussery's pottery was believed to be on the north side of the old Branner to Water Valley Road near Union Grove Church. Antique Stoneware: 1Gal. Upstate NY Jug, Primitive Brushed Cobalt Design, 19thC.
A 19thC. Salt-Glazed Jug with Primitive Floral decoration in dark. Brushed Cobalt, ca.1860-1880. The Jug is unmarked, but probably a piece from Upstate New York, likely made at one of the Hudson River Valley manufactories(Troy, Athens, etc) There is a small, shallow chip on the base(lower left) and an area of discoloration(rear, right) otherwise excellent. The stone pop occurred during production, prior to the addition of the salt glaze(see close-up) A desirable size, this 1Gal. displays beautifully and will complement any Early American Stoneware collection. I really don't deal with jugs a whole lot. But this one really caught my eye. It really has that beehive shape to it. Especially since the bottom narrows down just like the top does. Most times it is just the top. There are two things that I will mention about it and you can decide for yourself with the pictures. Towards the bottom below the handle is a small dime sized piece that is chipped off a little. It does not go through and is just on the surface. But is there just the same and needs to be mentioned. The other one is on the handle where the thumb is placed. It is a different color than the rest. I am not sure if this was made like this to give the thumb a not so smooth surface for gripping possibly. It looks to have been made like this from the factory because the color closest to the spout bleeds over onto the lighter colored part. Regardless. Primitive American Folk Pottery 1 GAL. Stoneware Jug E & LP NORTON Bennington VT
Here for your consideration is an antique American Folk pottery stoneware jug. This is a one gallon jug measuring 11" tall and is 7" in diameter at the base. This features a gray salt glaze finish with a slight"orange peel" surface. There is also an incised band around the neck. It also features a cobalt blue slip trail in an oak leaf design. It is incised and cobalt washed with the potter's stamp. E& LP Norton, Bennington, VT. The initials stand for Edward Norton and Julius Norton's son, Luman Preston. The two worked together from 1861 to 1881. This dates the jug to that time period. This is in good condition with some character flaws common in the manufacturing of these pieces like glaze skips and small"grit" pieces. There is a tight hairline just above the base of the handle and a few nips along ... morethe lower edge but nothing that distracts from the beauty of the piece. And this jug was made by the Miller Pottery in Alabama. A great story that I read about this from another listing and then checked it out. I love this stuff. In the early 1800’s. A French potter named Francis LaCoste emigrated to America. He first settled in Charleston, SC, because his ship wrecked in Charleston Harbor! Good fortune for him, because he met and married a Charleston lady named Alice Harris. Searching for clay that would allow him to produce pottery like he had made in France, Francis and Alice went to Mobile and found the perfect clay in the nearby settlement of Montrose. There they built a house and established their pottery works. During the Civil War. ... moreUnion soldiers set up camp on the LaCoste property, and among the soldiers in that camp was a young man from Lancaster, PA named Abraham Miller. Eventually he met Frances LaCoste Lavendar, presumably one of Francis and Alice’s daughters, whose husband had gone off to fight the Yankees and never returned. After the war. Abraham stayed in Montrose, learned the art of pottery making from Francis LaCoste, and fell in love with the young widow Frances LaCoste Lavendar. They were married and set out by covered wagon, accompanied by Frances’ little son Phillip Lavendar, to find a place of their own where they could establish a home and where Abraham could practice his newly-learned trade. This heavy. 1-gallon antique salt-glazed stoneware crock jug is a beauty! I'm not sure what was in it originally, but I'd guess hard liquor or moonshine. It has a lovely light cream to putty-colored salt glaze finish, with a hand-applied handle, and possible two-piece body construction. The surface has a wonderful patina, and the inside has the same creamy glaze. There are some scrapes on the mouth and top of the handle that are old enough to beautifully blend into the color of the salt glaze, a few stray dark marks, a few extra bits of clay stuck here and there, and no other damage that I can find. A very unique piece from a bygone era! Unsure of maker. From the late 1800s-early 1900s. I see no damage other than what I've already described. Could use a good cleaning. Offered for auction is this interesting primitive whiskey jug. This antique has probably seen a lot of use over the years and was probably used to hold moonshine at some point. it has probably seen a lot of partying in it's day. There is a cork in it which has an opening for liquid to pass through. It is dark brown on the top portion and kind of a tan/off white on the bottom portion. Base is a little over 7 inches tall and the entire jug is about 10.5 inches high. Base is approximately 7 inches in diameter. Bottom is slightly concave and has strips of old fabric affixed. Up for auction from our own collection is a very early Reddish Brown Glazed Stoneware Ovoid Jug. We bought this at a Wisconsin farm auction over 35 years ago. It stands 10 5/8" tall. And is 5" in diameter across the base and approximately 7" in the middle. This is a very early piece of stoneware and I would guess it to be from the 1850's to the 1880's- but please look carefully and do your own dating. It is in excellent condition with just the small pictured chips on the top of the rim spout and some glaze pops. There is also a glaze miss on the handle. Vintage Chocolate Brown Stoneware Whiskey Jug with Sidearm Handle Primitive
This one gallon heavy stonewar e jug in traditional beehive shape with a sidearm handle just has so much character. It's glazed with a medium gloss chocolate brown finish. No maker's mark or national origin anywhere on it. We found this jug at an estate sale in Southwestern Mi chigan. And it's a real charmer. The opening would hold a one inch cork, but there's none in it at present. You can see the the thumbmarks of the maker where the handle was set onto the side of the jug. Antique Stoneware Jug Stands 10" tall. Without stopper. Double-Handled with Wooden Stopper. Possibly a Native American-made piece This item was purchased from an older Native American man who said it had belonged to his Mother. He also said it was from around 1895. I am not an expert and I cannot verify this information. I am only passing it along. Very attractive piece. Majority is natural colored. Unglazed Top is glazed Brown. Piece is in very good condition.
