You can see the signature Woodruff/Cortland mark clearly on the front. There are 3 flake chips, which you can see in the last photo. There is one flake chip on the mouth of the jug, seen in photo #6. The only other flaw can be seen in photo #7; a small, very tight, hairline crack. Please enlarge photo's for best details. Altogether, in very good condition. It was made specifically for the World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition at the 1884 World's Fair in New Orleans. There is a discolored ring around the neck(see photos) this is not a crack. It probably occurred during manufacturing. Measures approximately 7 1/2" tall and 5" in diameter at the widest point. Stamped with a 4 above the maker's mark'Riedinger& Caire Pokeepsie NY' With a cobalt blue double floral design. Measuring 19" tall and 36" in diameter. This is a large, solid, beautiful jug that has been lovingly maintained by a family from Poughkeepsie NY. Still has the original wooden cork. There is a thin crack that runs from the bottom center up the 1st third of the jug. It does not appear to be deep. Also a crack that makes a circle shape about an Inch in diameter, towards the bottom rear, near handle( see photos) Otherwise in wonderful condition for its age. Antique 4 gallon Primitive Stoneware Moonshine Shoulder Jug Southwest Scene
Up for auction is an Antique 4 gallon Primitive Stoneware Moonshine Shoulder Jug with a Southwest Scene hand painted on it. The hand painting is old but I think it postdates the manufacture of the piece. The hand painting will probably easily rub off with a little mineral spirits if you don't like it. It is in decent shape for its age. A few small surface chips which I have shown in the pictures. No cracks. The typical wear to the surface found on these old jugs. As well as the imperfections caused by the manufacturing process. i 17 inches tall. 10 inches in diameter at the base. Weighs a little over 13 pounds. Several more pictures directly below. Special thanks to David Emett for contacting me to correct the information of the size of this rare canteen. Pretty sure with the photos you have listed that this jug is a quarter gallon rather that a half gallon. I am not aware of anyone who has actually measured the capacity of the canteens but for over 40 years this size is considered the quart. I already have a set but my two half gallons could be upgraded. Your jug is an exceptional example of this rare piece. The rarity of the quart has held but several other half gallon examples have surfaced. The quart usually brings a higher price than the half. The gallon is still the toughest to get. Whites Pottery, Utica, NY is famous for their cobalt paddletail and running bird stoneware designs that sell for thousands of dollars. It is salt glazed with cobalt blue. The front has the words"Utah Liquor Company and 167 South Main St" The backside features a scene of three men drinking. Below is more about the canteen and the Utah Liquor Company. One of the most prolific of the Utah liquors firms was the Utah Liquor Company. This firm is first noted in the 1894 in the Salt Lake City Directory. The initial establishment was at 167 South Main Street, a locale it kept through 1902. The canteens are among the most appealing examples of Utah stoneware. Here is a large 4-gallon antique stoneware jug crock made in Keene. New Hampshire. I can't quite make out the top line, looks a lot like J. S. Taft, xxxx-xx- N.Y. but not sure. It has an elaborate cobalt blue decoration with vines, flower and leaves, tendrils etc. This jug is about 19" tall and approx. 10-3/4" across the diameter at the base and about 34-35 inches in circumference at the widest part of the jug. The top and side(of the spout) have very old chips. There is an"in-the-making" defect in the front that you can view with the e-bay magnifier. 4 GALLON RED WING TARGET WITH TAIL JUG
Up for auction is this very impressive 4 gallon Red Wing jug. Believed to be Redwing. Redwing was known for their target with tail designs, use of turkey droppings, and their beehive shapes. You can see examples of this in Warmon’s Red Wing Pottery, identification and price guide byb Mark F Moran As is with all antiques. Especially Stoneware, there will be flaws. Most are because people don’t treat them right, some are factory. This jug sat in my bedroom for years and was treated with care, but through the years someone has not. I will list everything that I could find wrong with this jug. There is a hairline crack that goes all around the handle. This comes from picking up and carrying antique stoneware by the handle. You have to look closely to see it but it is there. I encourage anyone who purchases the jug or any other to not use the ... morehandle. There is a chip at the base of the jug measuring 1.5 by 1 inches. This was done in the firing because it is glazed over. So this is a factory flaw These are the only two flaws I can find. The cobalt blue 4 with target and tail are in great condition. The jug is very impressive. Statistics: the jug weight approx. 27lbs, The jug stands 15 inches tall The jug has a cercumferance of 35.25 inches at the top and 32.75 inches at the bottom All in all this is an outstanding example of early American history. For your consideration is a hand turned stoneware jug. Actually. This jug is more brown than the red that the pictures show. This jug is slightly ovoid in shape. It contains approximately 3/4 of a gallon of tap water. I do not know who made this jug or where this jug was made, but I'm 100% convinced it is old. The clay is a metallic color. From the surface, it is sitting on, to the rim is approximately 11" The arch of the handle is slightly above the rim. The bottom is 6 1/4" in diameter. This jug has 0 cracks, however around the bottom are some minor to insignificant chips. On the rim is a larger chip. This Red Wing Jug is in excellent condition with no cracks. There is a quarter size chip on the back side of the jug which can be seen in the last two photos. You are bidding on a large Toby type Jug or Pitcher of a guy that is not very good looking-ugly facial expression. He is holding what appears to be a pitcher in one hand and a glass in the other and is sitting in a high back chair. It is in good condition with the exception of a couple of places where they missed the glazing during the manufacture-does not detract from the item-in fact I hardly noticed them. It is 8 1/4" high. Colors are predominately browns. Tans and greens. Bottom is marked with an R within a triangle or diamond shape and a"quarter moon" next to that mark. Never seen one like this before. It looks like it has some age to it and there is a lot of crazing. I don't know if it originally contained shave lotion or not. The inside of the jug looks like it is glazed and is a brown color. There is one chip on the bottom of the jug near the edge(please see photo) it looks like it is an old chip to me. It looks like ... morethere is a small chip on the top of the opening of the jug but the brown color and glaze cover this chip so I think the chip may have happened when this jug was originally being made. This jug had a piece of the old cork inside when I purchased it(it came from an Estate Sale) I was able to turn the jug over and get the cork out. The cork will be included but it is very brittle and falling apart. There is crazing on the jug and it looks like it could use a good cleaning. Other than that. Yellow, pink and green jug, 4 1/2 inches, mottled colors, redware
I do not where this jug was made or who made it. I do know that it is old. I've had it for many years and it was old when I got it. I'm guessing that it was made in the 1800's, but it may be early 1900's. It looks to be made of red clay, as you can see on the bottom where they glaze does not cover the base material. The glaze is yellow with a lot of mottled pink with green colors. This jug stands about 4 1/2 inches high. The old cork is tightly sealed. There maybe dried contents inside of this jug as it weighs over one pound. Nothing is loose or liquid inside of the jug as I have shook it and nothing moves around. No chips or cracks just where around the bottom where you would expect on an old piece. No reserve on this colorful old jug. S&H, with insurance, is $8.50 in the U.S.A. p.s.
