CA home which was the ... moresite of a working vineyard and orchard during that time period. We are not sure of the true origins of this crock. Stockton was and still is a major inland port. Ag, dry goods, metals, timber and people came to and from Stockton by ship and boat via the San Joaquin Delta system from the San Francisco Bay in the 1800's. So it is certainly likely this piece could have made a long journey before arriving in Stockton. There were artisans in Stockton during the 1800's producing earthenware and glass goods. A good example of early pottery from these area may be found by seaching for"Stockton Art Pottery" online. DETAILS: Size: 6 gallon crock Material: Stoneware(cerammic) Salt glazed- crackling present Browned interior Unknown maker. No marks found Also no country of origin mark on base. She said it still had the price on it and therefore it was now hers. He said it was already sold and she called him"RUDE" among other things and stormed off. The jug was not priced cheap. But I really liked the look and the fact that it is so big. This made me feel that it was a wise investment that someone would get that upset over it. About McDade Pottery: January 26 1893 On this day in 1893. Robert L. Williams produced the first piece of ware in the new McDade Pottery plant. The plant was the successor to a"jug shop" begun in 1853 in the vicinity of what is now Bastrop State Park. It was moved to McDade in the late 1870s, and Williams, who was experienced in ceramic processes and recognized the potential for McDade clay, bought the business in 1890. He built a new plant that covered three acres, complete with two brick beehive kilns, clay-grinding equipment, and a railroad siding. He continued the potter's-wheel turning of specialty items and the production of food-storage vessels and housewares, but also added new products. RECEIVED THIS INFORMATION FROM AN EXPERT ON CERAMIC AND STONEWARE. This indian jug measures 17 in. tall and 12 in. wide As promised. Here’s the information I discovered about your 5-gallon jug with the Indian head logo. It was made by the Louisville Pottery Company, the predecessor of Louisville Stoneware. A man by the name of S.O. Snyder bought an existing pottery works, the John Bauer Pottery Co. from Mr. Bauer in 1905 and renamed the company Louisville Pottery Company. Mr. Bauer had been making pickle crocks and butter churns since 1889 and the renamed company continued to produce these and additional utilitarian stoneware pieces as part of its Cherokee line of products whose logo was an Indian brave surrounded by a double blue circle with stars inside. So your jug may have been produced as early as 1905, making it a true antique. The ... moreCherokee line was produced until at least 1930, The Louisville Pottery Company was sold to John M. Robertson in 1970, becoming the Louisville Stoneware Co. and resold in 1970 to Christina Lee Brown, who ran it until her retirement in 2007 when it was sold to Two Stone, Inc. a Louisville investor group. This is a 2 Tone Color color jug with the top being a dark brown and the bottom section having a cream color. This is a large jug that weighs 26 pounds and measures 18 and 1/2" tall by 11" across at the base with a 2 and 1/4" across mouth. There is some minor wear present as well as a small chip on the inner section of the mouth as well as some fine hairline cracks towards the bottom in a small area section. Stoneware Salt Glazed Two Gallon Jug with Screw Top For Sale. This superb stoneware example is in very good condition. The screw top is complete and threads into the stoneware neck. It has a brown glazed top with a sturdy handle and a cream glazed straight body. A black crown with the capital letters A.M. underneath are on one side of the top with the figure'2' stamped above the crown. On the bottom is the makers mark of Barker Pottery. Chesterfield and the date 1948. There is also a number 33C/983. This jug could have been used for milk. The A.M. could refer to the morning collection. We have no other information on the jug to be sure of its original purpose. Despite the lack of information the jug is very pleasing and would still be very usable today. PA Pennsylvania 3 Gallon Stoneware Jug. Tobacco Spit Glaze 3 Gallon H.P.Co. Jug. Stands about 13.75 inches tall. Condition is fine, with two small 1/4 to 1/2 shallow chips in the bottom, top and handle are mint. As for the tobacco spit. Turkey splatter, whatever you want to call those marks: I'm no expert on these old jugs. And I can find no other example of this phenomenon on Hawthorn Pottery output. I bought this jug in a country auction in PA, so I have no provenance for it beyond that. A little suspicious, I took my knife to the edge of one of the splatters, and although hard, I can get the blade to shave the surface of the lump. What this means, I don't know. Are ... morethe tobacco spit globs real, or maybe just some add-ons? Seems like a lot of deceptive work for an item that is already collectible and didn't sell for all that much in the live auction. Perhaps these old salt-glaze lumps are softer compared to the thinner glazes on the rest of the jug? I'll leave that up to you as the buyer. EARLY 1900s HAND TURNED BROWN STONEWARE POTTERY BEE HIVE WHISKEY JUG 2 GALLON
We are pleased to offer for your consideration this great old piece of stoneware pottery from the early 1900s. It was hand turned into a bee hive shaped large whiskey jug and is approximately 2 gallons in size. It is in relatively good condition with only a couple of small chips one being on the handle about the size of half a small fingernail and one near the base about the same size. There is a flaw about the size of a thumb near the base that looks like it was there prior to firing and some small nicks and dings from normal use from over the years. Along the bottom it appears that it may not have been glazed in a couple of areas prior to firing also but this jug is still a great example of early pottery. Please look closely at our pictures so you can see all the things we have tryed to describe prior to bidding.
