This is an Antique Carved Wood Oval Frame dated 1878. The seal is in place although it does have splits on the paper as you can see- we did not take it out of the frame. The two black ovals and the gold line seperating them appear to be on the glass- we believe the image is an engraving- the detail is superb especially the faces and the hands. The frame is nicely carved. Don't know the artist- there is a name on the back but it is almost impossible to read- looks like Lubeck or maybe Lichesr. ... moreAny help would be greatly appreciated. It is in excellent vintage condition- no chips or cracks to the glass- very little wear to the wood frame- some light wear to the high edge and two light age cracks in the wood- one spot at the lower left of a little flaking of the black under the glass- nothing major here- the image is excellent. They don't come much nicer than this. A Nice Special Addition to Your Collection. This is the most unusual piece I have ever owned. I bought this at the Brimfield Antique show years ago. The man selling it said it came from a family who moved here from Greece. When in Greece. Their relative(grandfather, great grandfather? used this girth on his donkey while plowing the field. The icons on it were to bless and protect the donkey, to ask God to keep the donkey from any harm. I have never seen another, but maybe you have? I am not sure of it's value. If one were to measure it by rarity, and faith- it would be priceless. I like knowing that this man was such a holy and devout man, and cared so much for his donkey too. Antique hand painted Orthodox Icon I know this came from Turkey near the Black sea north of Istanbul. The listing before was of St Barbara but have found out it is in fact. St. Kyriake(Domnica) the Great Virgin Martyr of Nicomedia"Saint Kyriake was the only child of Dorotheus and Eusebia. Since she was born on a Sunday(Kyriake. In Greek) she was named Kyriake. One day a wealthy magistrate wished to betroth Kyriake to his son. Not only was she young and beautiful. But her parents were wealthy, and the magistrate wished to control that wealth. The magistrate went to her parents to request her hand, but St Kyriake told him that she wished to remain a virgin, for she had dedicated herself to Christ. The magistrate was angered by her words. So he went to the emperor Diocletian to denounce the saint and her parents as Christians who mocked ... morethe idols, and refused to offer sacrifice to them. Diocletian sent soldiers to arrest the family and have them brought before him. He asked them why they would not honor the gods which he himself honored. They told him that these were false gods. And that Christ was the one true God. Dorotheus was beaten until the soldiers grew tired and were unable to continue. Since neither flattery nor torment had any effect. Diocletian sent Dorotheus and Eusebia to Melitene on the eastern border between Cappadocia and Armenia. Then he sent St Kyriake to be interrogated by his son-in-law and co-ruler Maximian at Nicomedia. Maximian urged her not to throw her life away. Promising her wealth and marriage to one of Diocletian's relatives if she would worship the pagan gods. St Kyriake replied that she would never renounce Christ, nor did she desire worldly riches. Wonderful signed in two places-19th century antique primitive Russian icon religious relic of Saint Nicholas. It is signed on the back with a faded but legible hand-written Russian ink inscription-I cannot read Russian but date of person owning it or gifting it or church ownership is dated on the back and reads"1896" please see inscription and date on back of wood block. It also has a stamped/embossed into the metal/tin at side signature of maker which is a bit faded but reads something like"CH" or"CR" with maybe a backwards"R" hard to see) and the number"84" with a round stellar'star' shape next to the number, I have included a close-up pic ... moreof this embossed signature as well-please see close-up pic provided. Antique 19th Century Russian Icon Christ Pantocrator with Saints at His Feet
This is an antique icon. Russian in origin, from a private collection. It portrays Christ as the Teacher, the book open to scripture, with two Saints supplicant by his feet. The feet themselves are highly detailed. The robes, in red and black and gold, delicately draped. The book of scripture is held with a cloth, showing reverence for the word. The right hand of Christ is raised. Christ is elevated slightly on a platform, and the fingers of the Saints are highly detailed as well. Faces are rubbed, and all but obliterated by those who have touched them. This Icon dates circa 1830. On the rear, the original blade marks for cutting the wood for the icon are plainly seen. One of the stretch bars, installed to keep the icon from bending, is missing. There are worm holes, and losses to be expected on an item like this. There is some staining to the reverse and the hoop has been reattached with thread. But this does not detract. Ref No. MI0815012, A finely carved antique framed religious adornment portraying a mother and child and dating to the 19th century. The figures are carved from a hard substance. Possibly of plaster, and depict a femail figure holding an open book to a standing child who is reading from it. The scene is most likely to be one of a religious nature, possibly the Virgin and Child. The frame is ... moremetal and the reverse is covered in a deep pink fabric, possibly silk.
