The icons painted on metal and set beneath embossed and pierced silver oklad with bronze finish and set within conformingly shaped silver frames with hanging rings. This authentic antique mid to late 19th Century Russian Orthodox Icon of the Mother of God of Three Hands would make a perfect addition to your collection. This highly revered icon of the Most Holy Theotokos would display beautifully on a wall or shelf. Type: Russian Icon Dimensions: 12" H) x 9 5/8" W) x 1" D) Age: 19th Century Origin: Russian Features: A 19th century Russian icon of the Virgin Mary with the three hands. With a silver-gilt and brass oklad repousse and chased, possibly with maker's mark in Cyrillic. The icon appears to be hand painted oil on panel. We did not remove the oklad to inspect it as it is firmly attached. The icon measures 12" H) x 9-5/8" W) x 1" D) and the back is covered in a linen cloth. This is the highly revered and significant icon of the Most Holy Theotokos Mary of the three ... morehands. Commemorated on June 28th and July 12th annually. It is also called the icon of the Virgin Troyeruchitsa of the three hands by the Orthodox Serbians. This icon is known as the Miracle working Mary. Saint John of Damascus. The great defender of Orthodoxy against the iconoclasts, was falsely accused of plotting against the Caliph of Damascus through the intrigues of the iconoclast Emperor Leo the Isaurian(reigned 717-741) The Caliph ordered St. John's hand to be cut off for his suspected treachery. The saint asked for the severed hand, and passed the night praying fervently for the aid before an icon on the most holy Theortokos. It depicts the beheading of Saint John the Baptist in jail and in the corner we see Salome the princess who is waiting to take the head in order to offer it it her mother. The icon is painted by a very talented master and belonges in the academic school of iconpainting that dominated in the Russian ... moreiconopainting in the 19th century. Especially in the bic cities which were more influenced by the western art. His parents, Isidore and Agathia Moshnin, lived in Kursk, Russia; Isidore was a merchant. At the age of 10, Prokhor became seriously ill. During the course of his illness, he saw the Mother of God in his sleep, who promised to heal him. Several days later there was a religious procession in Kursk with the locally revered ... moremiracle-working icon of the Mother of God. Due to bad weather, the procession took an abbreviated route past the house of the Moshnin family. After his mother put Prokhor up to the miracle-working image, he recovered rapidly. Exceptional abstinence from food and slumber were the distinguishing features of his life. He ate once a day, and little. On Wednesdays and Fridays he ate nothing. An Early 19th century original icon from the Russian Orthodox School. The icon was a family owned relic. Stored and preserved inside a private art-safe for more than a century. It was purchased by relatives of mine for over a half a century ago as a collectible addition to a series of icons from the same school; conditioned and stored in a private art-safe as well.
