His parents, Isidore and Agathia Moshnin, lived in Kursk, Russia; Isidore was a merchant. At the age of 10, Prokhor became seriously ill. During the course of his illness, he saw the Mother of God in his sleep, who promised to heal him. Probably it is pine wood, unique board prepared by primer of gesso and rabbit skin or fish glue. The colors are very vivid and transfer t an optimism, it is evident that the icon has provenance from a very urban environment, from a Bic city of the Ottoman empire with large Christian population, probably Thessaloniki or Ottoman Constantinople of mid 19th century. It has some light damages on the thin pine wood panel on wich it is painted, I have just removed a little the dark varnish and the icons has not restorations,it still has the authentic antique varnish which ha a very nice light yellow oxidation by the time and gives a nice patina on the icon, it deserves to be in a good collection of icons that wants to have a good icon of 19th century from northern Greek workshop. As you can see the icon print of St. Joseph has damage which would be expected with something of this age. You can pretty much see the condition of the wood in the photos. It's still very durable and sturdy. One thing that you cannot see is where the offering coins have dropped all those years ago. There appears to be very fine gold dust.seriously. On one side is depicted Virgin Mary with the infant and the other side is the great martyr St. George who killed the dragon. I guess this medallion/ icon is made and consecrated in the Russian monastery of St. Panteleimon on Mount Athos in the century. Then he got from Bulgaria Orthodox monks traveling/ taksiidioti/ The pendant is of excellent quality. Deep embossing and high artistic value. This is an Antique Carved Wood Oval Frame dated 1878. The seal is in place although it does have splits on the paper as you can see- we did not take it out of the frame. The two black ovals and the gold line seperating them appear to be on the glass- we believe the image is an engraving- the detail is superb especially the faces and the hands. The frame is nicely carved. Don't know the artist- there is a name on the back but it is almost impossible to read- looks like Lubeck or maybe Lichesr. ... moreAny help would be greatly appreciated. Antique 19th Century Russian Icon Christ Pantocrator with Saints at His Feet
This is an antique icon. Russian in origin, from a private collection. It portrays Christ as the Teacher, the book open to scripture, with two Saints supplicant by his feet. The feet themselves are highly detailed. The robes, in red and black and gold, delicately draped. The book of scripture is held with a cloth, showing reverence for the word. The right hand of Christ is raised. Christ is elevated slightly on a platform, and the fingers of the Saints are highly detailed as well. Faces are rubbed, and all but obliterated by those who have touched them. This Icon dates circa 1830. On the rear, the original blade marks for cutting the wood for the icon are plainly seen. One of the stretch bars, installed to keep the icon from bending, is missing. There are worm holes, and losses to be expected on an item like this.
