This is a very basic, simple and common style– you could call it“generic” It is the“Volkswagon” of oil lamps, a very basic and simple style for simple and limited budgets– something you would find in the home of the ordinary man of the first century A.D. Though by no means rare, it is uncommon to find such a nicely preserved specimen and in such pristine condition. Though there are some rather hard alkaline deposits inside the bowl of the oil lamp, it is in otherwise very good condition, sound, unbroken. There’s also a trademark of some sort on the underside surface of the pedestal. It too is a bit indistinct. But it seems to be either a Roman numeral“I” or perhaps simply a line. However a single line seems rather unlikely, a trademark should mean something. SO it seems most likely that it would have been intended to signify the numeral 1. It was not uncommon for the artisans who produced these pieces to leave some sort of“trade mark” on the underside of the pedestal so as to identify it as their produce. Rare Ancient Near Eastern Holy Land Pottery Jug 1st Millennium B.C.
A rare and genuine. Ancient Near Eastern Terracotta jug, dating to the 1st millennium B.C. With rounded base and globular body with wide. Cylindrical neck. The piece decorated with added pellets of clay and with two lug handles positioned bilaterally. A beautifully shaped vessel. And fascinating display piece. Height: 5 1/4 inches. Condition: Very good. Small area of base reattached and associated infill. Age related encrustation. Provenance: Ex-Collection of Henk Huffener(1923– 2006) A respected artist, officially honoured hero of the Dutch resistance, and successful antiques dealer, with establishments in Surrey and Kensington, England. Huffener was born in Utrecht in 1923. One of nine children. He soon became known for his artistic talents, most notably for his still lifes, portraits, and abstractionist works. Huffener, inspired by his ... morefather, also became immersed in the world of anti-fascist activism. Come the start of the war, he began traveling the Netherlands, helping Jews escape Nazi-occupied Europe by providing them with forged papers, and hiding them from their persecutors. This incredible bravery and selflessness was documented in The Other Schindlers by Agnes Grunwald-Spier(2010) And Huffener was honoured by Yad Vashem as'Righteous Among the Nations' in 1998. His wartime contributions were also commemorated posthumously in March 2010, when Prime Minister Gordon Brown awarded him the Hero of the Holocaust medal for"the service of humanity. Huffener eventually moved to England in the 1950s. Establishing his own antiques business in 1959 in Albury, Surrey. Here, his knowledge and collections grew to encompass antiquities, ethnographic art, glass, paintings and fossils. Also noted for his restoration skills, Huffener was much respected in his field, coming to befriend Herbert Reiser, one of the world's leading collectors. An attractive ancient Late Roman oil lamp. Dating to the 3rd- 5th Century A.D. originating from the Holy land. The lamp decorated with a delicate band of impressed geometric designs. The base with cross inside concentric circles and covered with a red slip. Lamps such as this were filled with olive oil in ancient times and lit by means of a thick wick.
