Antique French Gilt Bronze Clock w Cockerel. Jewels Antique gilt bronze mantel clock. Made in France, 19th century. Measurements: approximately 7 1/2 inches high. A little over 4 1/8 inches accross the front of the base. The case stands on 4 turned gilded legs. Base of white marble with an inset row of ormolu scrolls in the front. Rectangular steps. Tapering towards a marvellous cockerel/ rooster finial. The rooster being a symbol of France, this clock would have some French significance. Golden gadrooning around the base and at different levels. The front with fantastic applied ormolu flowers and foliage surrounding a protruding ring of paste'diamond' gems which enclose the dial. Above, casket like dome surmounted with the cockerel. Excellent modelling with fine detail of feathers and musculature and one can almost feel him rustling ... morehis tail and crowing. Sides of case are fluted. The dial is Classic French mastery and beauty: white enamel with the numerals. Both Roman and Arab(for the hours and the minutes) in dark, cobalt blue. They are surrounded on the inside by a ring of flower swags- exquisitely enamelled in minute detail. The hands of the dial are also quite lovely- very fine gilt openwork. The mechanism of the clock can be seen behind a glass door. We do not have a key. Nor are we clock experts, but I believe that this clock can be put to work with very little effort because when I moved it, I heard a constant tick tock. Of the most superb quality, by Swinden& Sons of Temple Street Birmingham. Two dragons stand guard. Supporting the movement and dial held aloft in a drum. A finely fretted panel allows the pendulum to be glimpsed swinging within the case. A cherub clutching laurel wreaths sits to the base. Candelabra are modelled as a dragon holding the three branches as a burning torch é. The modelling of the dragons is particularly well executed. It is an English made case and candelabra. Superbly modelled, finished and gilded. The movement is the highest quality square plate Pendule De Paris movement. There is a diamond registration mark, issued by the British Patent office, on both candelabra dating the design to 1877. The large dial is also bronze with 12 individual enamel cartouches and blued steel hands. The French movement is of the highest quality and is fitted with a pin-pallet escapement and rack striking. It is the square plated version of the Pendule De Pari s design with four pillars and heavy plates. The Swinden& Sons mark is on the backplate. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. This Sèvres and gold-gilt bronze clock stands 22 inches high. 12 inches wide and 6 inches deep near its base. It has been on my mantel for about fifteen years and adds incredible beauty to my dining room. The clock uses a S. Marti et Cie. mechanism which dates between 1867 and 1889. The clock has been checked and lightly cleaned by a professional clock maker and is in excellent and accurate working condition. MECHANISM- The clock has an 8-day bell-striking movement which is stamped“ S. Marti et Cie” in the center with“ Medaille de Bronze” in a circle around it. Samuel Marti was awarded ... morethe Bronze Medal in 1860. The mechanism and the pendulum have the same serioal number. Samuel Marti et Cie was a well known clock maker in Paris in the mid eighteenth century. The Medaille de Bronze stamp was used during the period 1867– 1889. Clock has its original pendulum and key. PORCELAIN- The detail of a cherub on the porcelain face is very detailed and in excellent condition. The face and hands are original. There is a Sevres mark under the lid but it would requiring disassembling in order to get a good photo of it. It is the crossed“L’s” with“S” inside. Similar to Kovel’s Dictionary of Marks. Page 226. This mark was used starting in 1771 and into the second half of the 1800’s. ORMOLU- The ormolu is magnificent and very detailed. The metal is solid bronze with heavy gold gilt. This is an amazing French Portico All Marble Mantle Clock Set. This clock was made in the 1860's- 1890's in France out of the highest quality marble. And bronze decorations. All the bronze pieces were hand gilded with Gold leaf, and every piece you see on this clock is 100% original to the piece, and in 100% original condition. No one has ever attempted to restore it, or re-finish it, which is a VERY rare find with these clocks. The marble is beautiful with white, pink and grays throughout. All marble pieces are also in amazing condition and 100% original to the clock. Included are the two original urns for the clock, there is some stress damage to the bottom most and top most metal pieces from 120+ years of being used, but there solid(See pictures) You usually do not see the original garnets with one of these clocks, most of the ... moretime during the years the clock becomes separated with it's urns, or the urns get destroyed. But these are the original matches to this clock, both marked underneath in the marble with the phrase"Made in France" in the same writing as the clock. One urn has a small crack in the small topmost piece of marble, it's stable, and unnoticeable. The clock itself is absolutely amazing, with 6 tall columns of marble, and the portico style free swinging pendulum in the shape of a basket of fruit, which matches perfectly with the other baskets of fruit on both the urns, and the clock itself. In gilt bronze with bleu turquin marble. Produced in Paris in the late 19th century, enamel dial signed"Ch. Gautier/ Ft de Bronzes/ Paris-Bordeaux" Removal of one bronze mount reveals the engraved mark"C+P" in the bronze. Clock measures 22.2 in(56.5 cm) tall. Overall condition is good. Candelabras have one and three screws missing, respectively. One candelabra lacks a rosette mount to block corner of the base. One bobeche liner has been replaced. Overall there are nicks and surface scratches to the bronze, rubbing and oxidation discoloration, consistent with age. Key is missing, but of course may be replaced easily. Finials and the base are in perfect condition with no restorations. The bronze fittings and the ormolu are also perfect. There is a tiny damage to the hand painted enamel face just to the right of the number“6. I didn’t notice is at first, but one of the black feet is a replacement. The rest of the enamel face and the fancy gilt hands are perfect with no restorations. Both springs are in very good, strong condition and this clock is trying to rum without the pendulum attached. When I tried to attach t pendelum I noticed that the thin spring piece of metal that holds the pendulum to the clock is out of kilter. If this little piece is adjusted properly, I guarantee this clock will keep good time once again. There are no other problems or any restorations to this late 19 th century French marble and bronze Mantle Clock. And rings on the half and full hours. To be safe for the auction I will assume the clock may need a servicing or light cleaning to keep perfect time, which I am sure has not been done in some time. The Clock itself is in very fine condition showing very light wear to the panels, and no chips, cracks, missing pieces, or repairs. ANTIQUE CLOCK: French Ormolu Case. Gilt Bronze, 1800's. Great Patina,New Movement This is a wonderful Antique French Clock in the Rococo Revival Style. The case is fine ormolu. Mercury gilded bronze. I believe it dates to the 1800's. It has been fitted with a new movement and keeps perfect time. Very often these fine cases were made in France to be exported and sold in the United States. I believe this is the case with this particular clock. As it came from the estate sale of the scion of an old and prosperous Boston family. It is extremely well modeled and cast. Featuring design elements on all four sides. At first glance. These decorations seem to be symmetrical. But they are not. For example. The foliage on the front surrounding the central scallop shell is slightly different from side to side. This is true of all of the foliage ... moredecorations on all four sides of the case. This slight variation from side to side avoids the static effect of absolute symmetry, which can be deadening, even in decorative objects such as this fine clock. At the very top is a wonderful finial. Also asymmetrical, featuring what looks like a Tulip blossom. This rests on a neo-classical, fluted Doric capital. This clock is rather large. Measuring 14 1/4 inches tall, 9 3/8 inches wide at the bottom of the front feet and 4 3/4 inches deep between the front and back feet. There is no damage to this clock at all; it stands straight and secure. Some purists lament the fact that I sometimes place new movements in these beautiful old clock cases. But. As is often the case, the original movement of this clock was broken and corroded beyond all hope of repair. So my thinking is that with the new movement, this beautiful object can be returned to its functional purpose; that is, to tell the time. Which is does perfectly and beautifully. This clock has all of the charm and beauty of a 19th Century Antique Clock without any of the troublesome concerns often associated with such. And it never needs winding. I will. And dates most likely to the late 1800's. It stands 13 3/4 inches tall, and keeps perfect time with a movement which I believe is later than the case itself. Rococo Revival was a 19th-century style characterized by curved silhouettes and ornate carving. It began as a"Modern French" style in England in the 1820s. Drawing on baroque elements of Louis XVI and Louis XV furniture, and developed in France in the 1830s under Louis Phillipe. The style was popularized at the 1851 Crystal Palace Exhibition in London, and at expositions in New York in 1853, and Paris in 1855. Our Clock is topped by and urn flanked by flower garlands which rests on an arch supported ... moreby two charming caryatids. Antique Bronze Gilt Clock Case No Movement French Tower Shelf Mantle
Up for auction is a beautiful case no matter what movement you slide in here! This piece(mind you I am NOT an expert) has a very European look. So I am guessing French. Please take a second(or 20) to look at the designs/patterns and come to your own conclusion. There are 2 stamps inside across from each other. Both markings are the same, it almost looks like a cup or Paul with an S on it. Other than that I have not a clue. But it is beautiful. And it is HEAVY! A rare ca 1880 Victorian Eastlake style rose gilt cast bronze(I think. Could be brass, doesn't attract a magnet) 7 1/4" clock pendulum with a 1 1/4" in diameter sulphide glass insert with red and white pinwheel center design. The pendulum is 2 1/4" at the widest. The glass medallion rises 1/4" from the rim of the embossed surround. The piece above the pendulum slides up and down the post. Not sure what that's for. It is unsigned. Enamel dials and the case is glazed(glass) on the sides/rear. The c lock's movement operates properly and the clock is in excellent condition. The 14 day movement strikes the hours and half hours on a bell with a Brocot dead beat escapement visible through the upper dial and a compensated pendulum of brass and steel peculiar to Ellicott's design. The gilt engraved dial mask; the upper white enamel dial with blue steel'Breguet' style hands and Roman chapter ring; the lower perpetual calendar showing: day. Date, month, equation of time, and moon phase. The numbers on the calendar dial around the inner circle indicate the difference between solar and mean time. The clock itself is set in a gilt case with a white porcelain dial. The base has lovely decorations with swag chains and patterns. It is very heavy. The movement is stamped"Japy Freres& Cie Grd Med. D'Honneur" means it(the movement) was made some time after the company(Japy Freres/Japy Brothers) won the Grand Medal of Honor(which they did at the Paris exhibition in 1855) they also won a medal in 1867. It shows they were awarded a medal at the 1855 Paris Exposition. It means that Japy Freres won an award in 1855 allowing them to display the award on their movements until the time a nother award might be won at a future exposition. It did not come with the key but has the bell and pendulum. I started the pendulum and the clock ran for about 30 minutes. It's in good condition as you can see and all the the works appear to be there. It is made of a white metal Spelter with a once gilded gold bronzed finish. It is about 6 and 3/4th inches high. The clock does not work. The clock does wind up. But I am sure it will need some attention to be an accurate timepiece.
