Up for sale is an antique oak barrister stacking bookcase.It is a four section folding glass with a curved pullout bottom section and matching top piece. It has been refinished in a golden oak stain with a laqured top coat. All wood is quartersawn with no defects. Bands on sides are in beauitiful condition. The side against the wall is just as nice as the one you can see. All sections fit together as they should. Measurements are: width 34. Height 60, depth 12.5 inches. Lovely pair of early 1900 barrister bookcases. Both are 72 inches tall. 34 inches wide and 9 1/2 inches deep. Both are grade 299 solid quartersawn oak and both have a desireable draw in the base. Both have bands and brass knobs on all sections and antique wavy glass. One top has extensive damage to it but cannot be seen because it is so tall. I took a photo of it. As I believe they had a brand called Library Bureau. Its hardware& moldings look similar to some of the Globe styles. In any case. It's a nice bookcase in good shape, with very clean lines, nice golden-oak color and appears to be constructed of mainly quarter-sawn oak with little if any veneer on the main exposed parts(excepting the back of course, and possibly the bottoms inside which look like a clear maple) The finish appears intact, with its age-related character. We've given this a cleaning, you may want to go further with perhaps some steel wool, decades of office-life generally leave these old barristers with their typical use-related'Character' ... moreplease see the photos) which to my eye is all part of the antique. We used this piece for holding antiquarian natural history books and art-books. For which it works excellently. But old Barrister Bookcases are great for displaying many sorts of things, keeping them dust-free& safe. Everything seems to work properly, glass fronts all slide up& back properly, brass knobs are all there etc. This Barrister is a nice sort of mission design in its plain square lines. With slightly rounded moldings which add a touch of'friendliness' to its design. As a modular piece. It has 5 main section- 4 are the normal style with top sliding glass door and 1 is a 2 door cabinet style plus the matching original top and base sections. I found some numbers and markings. I am fairly certain it is Globe Wernicke, possible Library Bureau or another famous maker from the 1910 era. The unique thing about this set is the size- by far the largest size sectional bookcase we have ever seen. The sections all measures 33" long which is about the normal length but they are all 17" wide and 13" high- much larger than most for those dimensions. It will need some attention and hopefully minor fixing- some of the internal hardware pieces are missing and the scissors and slides will ... moreneed some adjusting. The sections are all in good, solid condition with no cracks or major damage, a few spots of edge chipping to the quartersawn oak veneer but over not bad. All the original knobs are present. The top is fine and solid with a couple ring marks where some previous owner probably had placed a potted plant but I really think these would polish up fine. The base is intact and solid but the finish is very worn, the best thing we can say for the base is it does the job. My 17 photos should show you a fine example of what is being offered. Guaranteed a genuine classic 1910 era sectional elastic barrister bookcase in the desirable quartersawn oak. We are asking for local pickup as this would be very difficult and expensive to ship; I can take it to a local shipping store who offers UPS Ground professional packing and shipping but please be aware it would be very costly with 6 huge boxes. This is an oak Globe Wernicke stacking barrister bookcase with glass. It measures aprox. 32 1/4" wide x 12 1/4" high. It needs to be refinished and maybe a couple of joints re-glued. The piece of 1/4 round trim on the back which holds the glass in place is rough, we provided a close up photo. Otherwise it is in good condition. The is a misson lawyers bookcase from Globe Wernicke. Label says 898 mission oak finish and each of the 4 sections are labeled. I think the finish is fumed oak and is a lovely mission look. 55 inches tall. 11 inches deep and 34 inches wide. 4 sections with a seperate top and bottom. Bottom has a nice drawer. Original finish. Original antique wavy glass. All doors open nicely and have all inside door mechanisms. All hardware is original except for 2 knobs which were replaced at some poit. They were like that when I bought it. Nice shape, light expected wear. Easy to move. If you are in Queens or Brooklyn or manhattan, I could bring the bookcase to you for $45 cash in my highlander. Lovely matching pair of oak step-back lawyers bookcases. Label says Globe wernicke of London. All doors have bands around each section. And all have brass knobs to open. Each section is labeled with the Globe wernicke label of London. Both bookcases have a drawer in the bottom. Top sections are in excellent condition. Both bookcases are 71 inches tall, 34 inches wide and 11 1/2 inches deep at bottom. One section is missing a scissor but still opens. Slight wear to back. Antique Globe Wernicke Barrister Top $ Base Quartersawn Oak Grade 299
Real nice Globe Wernicke Barrister Top and barrister base. Contour top with original bands. Original finish. 34 inches wide. About 10 1/2 inches wide and 3 1/4 inches tall for the top. Same for the base but the base is taller. 5-6 inches I guess. This is a rarer size and fits sections that are 9 1/2 deep. Outstanding oak grain. Has a small nick that I photoed. Not major. The top is lovely. The piece of wood that goes across the base has a section that splintered off but is still in good shape. Works fine and is very stable I have a photo of it on a matching base. Antique 2 door Quartered quartersawn oak bookcase with leaded glass---15020
This is a very fine two door quartered quarter sawn oak bookcase or china cabinet. Piece has original leaded glass in the upper section of the doors with a floral pattern and an overall organic motif. All original glass(wavy) and in excellent condition. We have refinished this piece and it has a smooth and even finish-if you know our refinishing you know we do a complete job-inside and out. I am not sure of the manufacturer of this piece but believe it is the Larkin Co. of New York. Notice the claw feet on this piece and the turned round columns.
