We purchased a small lot of refinished antiques from an adorable couple, and this antique library table was one of the pieces. This beautiful table features an ogee bevel edge, round corner top, and is all tiger sawn oak with a large dove tail drawer in the front. It has cabriole legs that come down into a bottom shelf support and terminate in a detail toenail claw foot. The desk is 38 inches wide, 26 inches deep and 29.75 inches high. The bottom shelf is 9 inches high. The size of the large drawer is 31 inches wide and 3.5 inches deep.

We have since found out through an online appraisal company that ... moreis is an Antique Drop Front Writing Desk" from around 1900-1915. But it will really always be"Grandpa's writing desk" Unfortunately my seller is downsizing their home and grandpa's desk needs to find a new place to go. It is a lovely little piece measuring 39" tall. 27" across and 15" deep. It is in nice condition given it's age, but it does have a small chip out of the front right corner post. You can see it in the photos. The interior is plain with no shelves, drawers or cubbies. The information that I received from the appraisal company is as follows: The drop front oak(not quarter-sawn oak) writing desk is a Mission style Arts and Crafts desk; there is a keyhole in the top of the fall front and a small gallery or backplate on the top back of the desk. There is an"H" stretcher in the middle bottom of the desk and a vertical"X" stretcher on each bottom side of the desk; the legs are quadrant legs; there is one drawer with round brass pulls beneath the fall front. I would date the desk C. 1900-1915; the value would be between $625.00 and $700.00 in today's retail market. Due to the size of this item it will not be available for shipping. Circa 1850. The table features a stunning rich oak colour. The tabletop features a lovely oak thumb moulded edge with bull nose corners which surrounds professional fitted new three-piece green. Gilt& blind tool leather. Below. There are three working moulded drawers to each side of the table. On one side. There is a large compartmentalized central drawer. All drawers feature working locks and keys and the original brass key escutcheons. The drawers are hand dovetailed and constructed with oak(a sign of good quality) Below the drawers sits a lovely moulded lip edge. The table sits on four lovely baluster shaped oak legs. The legs feature the original brass castor tip collars and original brass castors. This type of table was designed to stand in the centre of a room so that the three working drawers each side was accessible. It is an English antique that was originally made around 1890 featuring barley twist legs and stretcher. It is hard to believe all of the wonderful carved features in this writing desk. Each of the four sides is meticulously carved to great detail. These carvings are the most prominent feature of ... morethe desk. The next thing your eye is drawn to are the barley twist turned legs and stretcher. Using a stretcher between the legs allows the heavy desk to remain sturdy even after all these years. The table top is finished with a nice black leather that has gold tooling. This leather is not the original desk leather. The front of the desk has two drawers that work easily. Their handles are part of the carvings on the drawer fronts. The fully finished and carved back has two faux drawers so it looks just like the front. This antique writing desk is really in excellent condition. It is sturdy and strong and we did not find any repairs or breaks on the carvings. The black leather is near perfect. The table top around the edges shows some old minor signs of wear(tiny dents here and there as you would expect to see) Otherwise this desk has stood the test of time remarkably well and would go great in a variety of surroundings. The wood is cut in such a way to reveal the large flaking pattern found in white oak(Quercus alba) that has been quarter sawn. Once stained, the wood has a rich golden color as seen in the photos. The table measures about 26 inches wide, 42 inches long, and stands about 30 inches tall. There is a drawer on one side and a shelf across the bottom. There is a burn mark along the edge as shown in the 5th photo, but otherwise the table is in good condition for its age. The inside of the drawer seems to have been replaced with some plywood at some point in time. The drawer doesn't slide smoothly, but may be an easy fix. Plain and simply. This is a very clean Oak library table we just finished a total restoration on. It has been glued tightened and will take on another hundred plus years with no problem. Now when I say clean I really mean it it has not the slightest issue. Made of solid quartersawn oak and then handcarved it would make the most practical desk or library table for many different uses. But even more than that it offers a wonderful look that would brighten any room. Every last detail has been meticulously covered and the desk needs absolutely nothing.
