French Empire Mahogany Marble Top Commode Chest Dresser with Gilt Mounts c. 1805

Description: This listing is for a 19th Century French Empire Period Mahogany Marble Top Ormolu Mounted Commode. Circa 1805. It is a fascinating work of art, constructed in three parts- first the marble, which is extremely heavy at just over an inch thick(1 1/16" thick) the top of the chest with the top drawer, and the bottom of the chest with the lower three drawers. Lifting the marble reveals the construction of the topmost portion. Each of the front corners with a full gallery of hand cut dovetails that lock the top into the thick corners. All of the secondaries are solid oak, joined with large pegged tenons along the frame, this large thick top joining the lower case with thick through-tenon wedged mortise joints- by ... morepulling out the wedge, the tenon drops out of the top portion, freeing it from the lower case. This lifts away from the case as long as the columns are not nailed at the top. The top drawer features the most incredible gilt ormolu mounts. Cast with stunning attention to even the smallest detail. Horizontal curled anthemions flank a seated angel, inscribing in a blank scroll. With wings furled behind, detailed even down to the tiniest feather, the angel rests with legs slightly bent as the robe flows from his legs, a trumpet peering out from behind him. Over either columnar support, gilt ormolu mounts of angels flank the top drawer, the figure on the right peering towards the sky with a globe behind him, the angel on the left sitting on a carefully crafted French Empire chair reading a scroll. The turned columns on either side rest on square plinths. Capped at the top and bottom with gold gilt flamed mounts, finely detailed throughout. Three drawers slide in and out of the case, each hand dovetailed front and back with solid oak secondary woods making up the frame and bottoms. This beautiful chest was found in S E Ohio in a Morgan Co. farm house. The combination of woods and inlay work make this chest very appealing. The top is a one piece poplar board with a red wash on it. The sides are cherry with walnut panels. The drawers are solid tiger maple. And the inlaid keyholes are walnut. The knobs are original and screw into the front of the drawers. If you don't like porcelain, they can easily be replaced. The secondary wood is poplar and the post and legs are cherry. The chest is in original as found condition. It measures 47 1/4' tall case width 41' top is 21' deep, it has a small overhang on the back for chair rail. A fine addition to any collection. This is a charming 19 th century flame mahogany veneered miniature American Empire chest of drawers. It measures 12 ¼” wide x 7” deep x 12” tall. It has tiny inlaid wood patterns at the top of each side to replicate carved wood. It even has a small brass lock that appears to be a working lock. Though there’s no key to test it. I imagine this miniature chest was built as a salesman’s sample or an apprentice piece. Please see all photos to get a full sense of the condition of this chest. The finish on the right side is crackling and rough and has splits in wood. There’s a split around a knot of the left side of the chest. The top has a thin split and a knot in the wood. 19th century empire solid mahogany chest of drawers
Solid mahogany chest. Empire style with book match detail. Features six drawers. With all original knobs; two at top are glass, others metal, although bottom right metal knob is partially broken. There are six individual keyholes, keys are missing. Minor dings and scratches, with some white paint. The back of the left top chest is cracked, and the bottom drawer is loose. It measures 40 inches by 44 inches by 19 inches.
