Height to writing surface is 27" at front, 29" at back, has 18" wide by 5 1/4" deep raised compartment with hinged lid. Has four drawers, each with two pulls that open on the RH side, false fronts and pulls on LH side, each drawer 11" wide by 4 1/4" high by 16" deep. Has two inside drawers under writing surface. All surfaces except turnings have pecan burled veneer, narrow inlay on top and front, porcelain casters" This desk is in very good to excellent condition for it's age-see pictures. Has split on writing surface(see pictures) split not full width of surface. This'split' has not changed in length or depth during our family's decades-long possession of the desk. Has non-functioning'latch' To hold top partially open, not sure of purpose. Note that all four elevations are completely finished. The workmanship, finish and attention to detail and decoration are from another era! Local pickup. Or I will work with packing/shipping company of your choice. What caught my eye on this piece was it was a davenport desk. But instead of the typical slant front, this one has a secretary section on top. This is not a married piece, these two started life together, guaranteed. The top has nice intricate Eastlake type of carvings and half pinwheels surround the gallery. The desk top or writing surface drop downs to reveal a nice writing desk. Complete with great little cubbyholes and two drawers. There are no drawers missing, and all the hardware on this piece is original. We have the original key and it is included. The finish is original and has a rich. Warm patina. As with most old furniture, one can see areas where the finish has worn a little from use, which suits me just fine. I like to know that an old piece was used, not just displayed. I am sure if one were to use some stain in places, it would darken these wear spots right up, and then a nice coat of paste wax to continue to preserve this piece. This is local pick-up only. Thus with this one. 34" tall 21 1/2" wide and deep. The top has been repaired on the back right corner. the underneath side of the writing lid has some splitting of the surface.No keys. Ink stains in the box compartment on top where ink was stored. This box is 19 1/2" x 6" with 10 compartments for pencils. Paper, pens and such. The drawers(4) are lined with felt. They are 14" x 11" by 3 1/2" deep. The scroll work is a fern like pattern I combine shipping by weight. Antique Davenport style desk purchased at an auction in New Jersey many years ago. It has original finish with green material(like oilcloth) writing area on top. It has beautiful graining on the inside with shelves and a small drawer. There are three pull out drawers on the right side as seen in the picture. They all have working locks as does the slanted top and the key is necessary to open the drawers as there is no knob on any of them. Rare Ship's Captain ENGLISH DAVENPORT DESK- c.1870 Search The Davenport Desk is English. C. 1870 This is a cherry desk with an ebonized finish. Typical of the Victorian era. Davenport desks were commonly thought of as"Ship's Captain's" desks. Very efficient and organized in a compact design that took up little space. Reputed to have gotten their name from the inventor. Captain John Davenport, back in the days of Clipper Ships plying their trade to the Far East. DESCRIPTION: The desk has four(4) drawers that run along both sides of the desk. On the left side the four(4) drawers have knobs but are designed not to open. On the right side of the desk. The four(4) drawers have knobs and do open and close. They have a key hole to lock them that was used during rough seas to keep them from opening but I do not have the key. ... moreThe desk is mounted on four(4) rollers and moves about with ease. When used at sea on a Clipper Ship the desk was securely bolted down to prevent movement. The hinged desk top is 21" X 15" and 3/4" thick. It opens up to reveal two interior drawers with knobs. The drawers are each 9"X 5"X 2" The open area inside of the desk when the hinged top is open is 18 5/8" X 13" and the depth of the opening at the front of the opening is 2 1/2" Gradually increasing in depth to 4 3/4" at the back. There is an open lid hinge on the left side of the desk that holds the top of the desk in an open position. The two(2) hinges that connect the desk top to the base both work smoothly and easily. They were very popular during the 19th century,and were often referred to as a campaign desk. F rom a period known as the EMPIRE PERIOD.And could be possibly older. UNIQUE. Pretty piece. Have had this since my parents purchased it for me in a NJ Antique store in the 1960's. Referred to this as the"Nancy Drew" desk, due to the six hidden secret drawers. There is a secret compartment where the vertical panel below the script pens and ink is released by lifting up the left hand divider where there is a spring clip under the wood. Designed to withstand military campaigns and travel. The box has drop down carrying handles on the two sides which are the early form of handle. There is a side drawer which pulls out when a brass pin is pulled out with the box in the open position. The top has two brass inserts designed to receive a reading stand which is not with the desk.
