Estate find! Nice old amethyst or sun purple lightning rod ball. It measures approximately 4-1/2 inches in diameter. See photos for condition/details. It shows age from years of use. There are the expected swirls and air bubbles in the glass. But no cracks or damage; just the expected nips around the collars and the inside can use a cleaning. It is made of Iron and gilded and came from the top of a demolished chapel in Italy. This type of Weather Vane with a Cockerel was a frequent feature of continental churches and chapels. A papal edict in the 9th century was responsible for the proliferation of Cockerels. Or Weathercocks, as they were also called, on churches. This edict required every Church in Christendom to be mounted by a Cockerel. This symbol was to recall Peter's betrayal of Christ(Luke 22:34) I tell you, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before you will deny three times that you know me" Although only the symbol of the ... morecockerel was required by the edict, the motif, it seems, was quickly wedded with the weathervane. By the 13th century the word for weathercock(gallum) and weathervane(ventrologium) had become interchangeable. Interestingly, early weathercocks did not include cardinal letters, as Christian churches always lay east to west. The also almost always, for some reason, had no legs or feet. Below is an example of another early Cockerel from Europe: I was recently visting some friends in Florence and they took me to the shop of an aquaintance of theirs who is an antiques dealer. It was there that I found this Cockerel. It was a little difficult to get the story of its origin. As many dealers are understandably reluctant to reveal their sources. But from what I could understand, this Cockerel was on a small chapel to the northeast of Florence which had been damaged in the earthquake there a few years ago. Since then, the walls of the building had been shored up with planks and anything of value had been removed, including this Cockerel. c.1910 Kretzer St. Louis Lightning Rod Brass Finial 10 1/4" Spear Tip End
This is a 10 1/4 inch long lightning rod finial marked Kretzer St Louis. Manufactured around 1910. It is threaded and meant to be attached to the upper most tip of a lightning rod to attract the lightning away from the building. It has a green color and may have been painted long ago. I am also selling a Kretzer wind direction arrow in a separate auction. and I do combine shipping. Both items were on the same barn.

This is a 22 1/2 inch long lightning rod wind direction arrow marked Kretzer on one side and St Louis on the other. Manufactured around 1910. It is metal and meant to have a piece of colored glass in the tail. The glass needs replaced with the color of yor choice. The metal has a green color and may have been painted long ago. Antique Tennis Lady Weathervane Purchased from an Old Barn in Northern Virginia I don't know too much about these but I believe it is copper. Please judge for yourself) Looks like it was painted gold at one time. Nice shape. There appears to be no dings or dents. There is no visible rust that I can see. No cracks or splits. Antique Rooster Weathervane Bronze & Cast Aluminum *Full Bodied*
i Up for Auction: Revisions were made to the pics today. Monday June 3rd. An Antique Full Bodied Rooster Weathervane. The Rooster appears to be Bronze. The Rooster has a Nice Patina about it as you can see in the pics. The cast aluminum. Which I'm calling it, is in remarkable condition. There are places where the aluminum shows through as shown in the pics due to years of service and weather situations like large hail stones and other debris which may have come in contact with it. The height of the entire weathervane from the roof to the top of the Rooster is 40" The Rooster is 10" tall and 8 1/2" wide. The Arrow is 33" acrossed. The direction indicators are 19" acrossed. The letters are 3 7/8" tall. The arrow and the stem has a"hammered" look to it. The Rooster has a seam in it from the breast ... moreup over the head and than opens up at the tail which was intentional. This is what is called a full bodied Rooster. This very nice rooster weathervane came from the estate of my Grandparents. This has been on their barn for as long as I can remember and I'm just shy of 60 years old. My understanding is they bought the house in and around 1947. There is no way that I can't verify whether the weathervane was on the barn when they bought it or not. I see no markings on the weathervane that might give away the date of it. Also. There is no way that I could know whether or not this has ever been repainted. Fabulous Primitive Vintage Rooster Chicken Weathervane Original Finish I am still listing new items from Indiana. And have a boatload of new things from the flea market too. Lots of primitive antiques, farm finds, folk art, and the usual wacky Maureen stuff- you don’t want to miss this week! What's not to love about an old weathervane- don'tcha love the look of them? And this one has character to spare! It's an older vintage weathervane- made from spelter. I'm guessing as it's a grey metal that a magnet does not stick to- except for the base, which is brass, and has mounting holes on the sides for mounting. It's a rustic rooster, with a black painted finish that is accented with deep barn red for the details on his head. The center pole has a hand hammered look. It stands 24" tall to the top of the rooster, and ... morethe directionals are 15 1/2" apart end to end n/s, e/w. The base measures 2 1/8" square. The whole piece weighs 4 lbs. It does come apart, the directionals can be removed, as can the rooster as you can see from my photos, the top of the pole sticks out of his back, and you just lift him off. I will dis-assemble him for shipping in order to make the box smaller and hopefully save you some dabloons. It's in excellent solid and sturdy condition, with rustic wear to the finish that can be see- lots of worn black paint esepcially on the rooster, where you can see down to the metal, as well as the highest relief spots on the directionals and poles- that's the charm about him, though- he's primitive, he's old, he's all original, he's yours! Antique Hunting Dog Weathervane/circa 1900-1920
This is a really sweet. Antique sheet iron weathervane of a hunting dog. I would say it dates to the early 1900s- 1900 to 1920 or so. It could even be earlier. I don't see any evidence of old paint, so I assume this is the original, now quite weathered, surface. There is a rod that extends forward on the mounting fixture. I don't know what that was for but the end of it is through the mounting piece and seems to have a finished end nib where it come out the other side, indicating to me that it is not broken, and meant only to extend forward. I'm sure it had nothing to do with the directionals. Overall the vane is 27" long, including the rod. It is 14&1/2" high from the end of the mounting pole to the top of the dog's head. From the tip of the dog's nose to the end of the base it sits on is about 17. The mounting ... morepole is 6" long and is attached to the base with a single old rivit. Condition of the vane is as found and as shown. There is an old break where the front foot meets the base(see pictures) I believe it's an easy fix- a quick weld will do the trick. The edges of the iron are beautifully smooth- indicating excellent age and exposure to the elements. I guarantee this is not a fake or recent reproduction and will take it back if the buyer is not satisfied that it is right. There is no doubt in my mind that this is a genuine antique vane from the the first part of the 20th century. Please look at all my photos for the best idea of condition. US ship only. Weather Vane: Antique Rooster w Directionals. Painted Iron. 23.5" Tall x 20" wide If you set your monitor at FULL SCREEN from TOOLS you will be better able to view the photos. This is a charming Weather Vane featuring a Rooster and an interesting arrow which I picked up years ago near Salisbury. Maryland, which is the headquarters for Tyson's Chicken. All around there is serious chicken raising country. This Rooster seems to have had several coats of paint during his long lifetime. The last one being red. He is made from cut out iron sheeting. The Rooster and his arrow are one piece. Rather than being commercially produced, I tend to think that this Rooster was a one off produced by a very talented metal worker. I have never seen an arrow quite like his, with its wavy top and tulip shapes used for both the fletchings and the ... morepoint. As he is now on his wooden stand. This Rooster is 23 1/2 inches tall and 20 inches long. The Rooster himself is 8 1/4 inches tall and 7 1/4 inches from his breast to the back of his tail feathers. The arrow is 20 inches long, and the directionals are 15 1/4 inches long. Some of the paint is beginning to flake on the bottom of the ordinals. But other than that, this Rooster is in pretty good shape and still turns freely on his supporting rod. The photos give an exellent idea of the charm and cheerfullness of this Rooster Weather Vane. Up for bidding is a vintage lightning rod with weather vane and light blue glass globe. The globe has a few minor chips around the top edges of it as seen in the pics but they are hard to see when on the lightning rod and with weather vane on top. The weather vane is a directional one. Looks as though the original glass pane from the weather vane has been replaced with a different red pane. Possibly plastic, so I dont believe its entirely original. ANTIQUE c.1900 CAST IRON and COPPER WEATHER VANE ARROW 28 1/2" LENGTH Great old cast iron weather vane directional arrow. Figural arrow has a center double loop where it can be placed on a lightening rod or pole. The opposing end of the arrow is thick copper and was made so an animal or figure could be mounted to it. The cast iron arrow and copper rod are riveted together in the center. This appears to be all original and is all very old but solid and free of cracks or damage. Some typical pitting in the cast iron as shown. The overall length is 28 1/2" With the arrow portion measuring about 16 inches long and the copper rod portion measuring about 12 1/2 inches long. This rare vintage clear red lightning rod ball is in very good condition. No chips or cracks. It came off of an old Ohio livestock barn that was built in 1910. The globe is 5 1/2 inches tall stem to stem. It has a 1 1/4 inch rod hole.The circumference is 14 inches. Vintage, NOS, Chrome Lightning Rod Topper/Point: Still Has Paper UL Tag On Base!
This is a vintage piece that came out of my grandparents estate. He was a lightning rod installer from roughly 1940-1980. I'm not certain how old this piece is. But I would guess Pre-1970. It looks to me like its brass with a chromed point. It is 10" long. I'm guessing this came out of his stock and looks unused/NOS. Vintage Aluminum Weathervane Whitehall Metal Studios Lady Watering Garden Flower
This auction is for a vintage cast aluminum. Roof mount weathervane made by the Whitehall Metal Studios. It has some waer on one side and the other side looks almost new. I don't think it was ever used outside, but it was stored where one side suffered some minor corrosion and paint loss. It is completely adjustable and it disassembles for storage(and cheaper shipping) It depicts a woman wearing a sun bonnet and a long dress, watering some flowers in front of her. It has an all over hammered appearance and nice detail. It measures about 18" long and about 22" tall. No broken or bent parts. Low minimum bid, no reserve.

Striking Antique Early 20c Large Rooster Copper Weathervane Weather Vane
Up for consideration is this copper hollow body Rooster weathervane. Nice condition overall. There are hacksaw cuts where the two brass rods intersect, It looks like someone was trying to remove it and didn't know what they were doing. This doesn't affect the stability of the weathervane it is still solid. Everything else is as it should be. Rooster comes with the stand in the pictures.
