Two Antique 19th Century Genuine Natural Good Quality Marquise Faceted Ruby Precious Gemstones from Ceylon. ORIGIN: Ceylon. 19th Century. SIZE: Length: ... more5mm. Width: 2 1/2mm. Measurements approximate. WEIGHT: 0.24 Carats(the pair) NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: Ruby was worn by the ancient Mediterranean civilizations as an amulet for protection from plagues. Poison, sorrow, and evil spirits. Both the Greeks and Indo-Europeans(Celts) believed that the“heat” evidenced by the intense, red color was fire from within the gemstone, capable of boiling water or melting wax. Here are two very nice quality 19th century antique hand faceted marquise cut ruby precious gemstones from Ceylon(present day Sri Lanka) Both are relatively eye clean, of higher value character as opposed to lower value translucent rubies. Of course most ruby gemstones are anywhere from lightly to heavily blemished. Most completely transparent rubies you see offered today at retail are synthetic. While this particular pair might not be absolutely flawless, to casual scrutiny they are at least near eye clean, and are definitely at the higher end of the quality spectrum. At magnification(such as these 5x images here) they are seen to possess a modest number of very faint blemishes composed of colorless crystalline material. Nonetheless, they both possess the much sought after bright blood red color which has captivated mankind for eons. To the trained eye the photo enlargements will literally shout that the gemstones have been hand-faceted. The coarseness of the 19th century faceting is considered appealing to most gemstone collectors, and is not considered a detriment. Unlike today's computer controlled machinery, the cut and finish of a gemstone such as this is the legacy of an artisan who lived two centuries ago. Such antique hand-faceted gemstones possess much greater character and appeal than today's mass-produced machine-faceted gemstones. These gemsto

With no written records of their own. Our knowledge of the Celts comes from their encounters with other cultures. The first major event is about 400 BC ... morewhen the Celts descended from the Alps and drove the Etruscans from the Po River Valley. Thus, the rise of their culture chronologically parallels that of the Roman Empire. Of larger stature than the Romans, Celtic warriors were fierce and fearless fighters who were never defeated by the Romans, but, by 386 BC they had captured Rome contributing to the fall of the Roman Empire. Like the Romans, they used chariots in war and subscribed to a pagan religion. Forged iron, 9 1/8 overall with broad tang for scale grips and characteristic opened ring terminal. Description CLADDAGH NIGHTSHIRT Great for St. Patrick's Day! If you're looking for neat and pressed. This isn't the dress for you! This adorable ... morelittle primitive wall nightshirt decor is rough. Wrinkled and grungied in our own coffee vanilla formula. Neck, sleeve and bottom hemlines are left with raw edges and have been washed so they're plenty frayed. The nightshirt is made from msulin. It measures 18.5" long from the shoulders to bottom and 16" wide from tip of sleeve to tip of sleeve. We've made our own cinnamon stick and twine hanger to complete. Rusted safety pin with our"aged" tag. A great addition to your primitive decorations. Claddagh Nightshirt Payment& Shipping Payment should be made within 7 days of close of auction. Ancient Celtic Ritual Bronze Sickle
Ancient Celtic Ritual Bronze Sickle Search Cast bronze Celtic ritual sickle with a beautiful dark green patina. The Roman author Pliny the Elder described the Celtic ritual gathering of mistletoe which was found growing on an oak tree. A Druid. Dressed in white, cut the mistletoe using a sickle and allowed it to fall on to a white piece of cloth. This ritual took place on the 6th night after the new moon. From this account, we see that the Druids held some importance to the color white, and used a sickle. We prefer white robes for our clergy in ritual and have adopted the sickle for our use. Presently published only in paper back(and at $24.95! The Irish sun-god Lugh was also possessor of a magical spear which seems to have symbolized a ray of the sun. It was gifted with an individual life of its own and was so thirsty for blood that it could be kept from slaying only by steeping its head in an infusion of poppy leaves which acted as a narcotic upon it. On the day of battle it was taken out of this brew. When it called out mightily, lashing itself into a frenzy and emitting flashes of fire. When freed, it launched itself against the ranks of the enemy in a tireless orgy of slaughter. For many years Lewis Spence waited for a book to be published on the subject of Celtic-British ... moremagic. Many essays and articles appeared. But no comprehensive single volume. Finally Mr. Spence could wait no longer. He decided to write the book himself. The Magic Arts in Celtic Britain” is that book. When Spence employs the term“magic” he is describing all the occult arts of Celtic Britain. Here the reader will find theories respecting the origins of the Druids and their association with the cult of the Divine King, reincarnation, the cults of Arthur, the mystery of the Holy Grail, the questions of second sight, Celtic spells and charms, necromancy, prophecy, and divination. King Arthur Knights of Round Table Medieval England Lancelot Guinevere Tristan
The Romance of King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table by Sir Thomas Malory. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 501 pages. Publisher: Weathervane Books; 1977) ISBN: 0517231360. This vigorous. Eloquent epic tale of valor is noted for having been written in the best English prose of the Fifteenth Century. The accompanying illustrations are, of course, a perfect example of the best illustrations of any century. The characters will be familiar: Lancelot and Guinevere, Tristan and Isolde, for this is the definitive account of the Arthurian legends, and Pollard's is the definitive abridgement. His preface says: The story of King Arthur and his knights is one of the greatest that men have ever made. Greater by far than that of Charlemagne, which had come into fashion a little earlier, greater perhaps ... moreeven than the tale of Troy, already some 2,000 years old, which for some centuries it eclipsed. It is through the fifteenth century prose of Sir Thomas Mallory, in which homeliness and nobility go hand in hand, that it holds its place in our hearts. But the story itself was the outcome of the second half of the twelfth century and the beginning of the thirteenth, the days of England’s Henry II and his three turbulent sons Geoffrey, Richard Coeur de Lion, and John. In the days when the Arthurian romances were coming into existence. Violence, cruelty, and luxury were rampant. But the greatness of these evils called forth some great virtues to counter them. This story bears traces of these and is penetrated to its very core by the special virtues of days in which men were content to live dangerously, carrying their lives in their in their hands and willing to lay them down lightly rather than break the rules of the game or be faithless to work or friend. CONDITION: This is the special. Illustrated edition with 32 illustrations(illustrated by Arthur Rackham, 16 color, 16 black + white) Book has clearly never been read, the inside of the book is pristine. Pages are clean, crisp, un
Ancient European Bronze Age Winged Flanged Axe / Ax
This is one of the largest. Most beautiful, Middle Bronze Age axes we have seen in recent times. A beautiful copper alloy winged, flanged axe, dating to approximately 1400 B.C. The patination on this large Axe is exquisite- a brilliant turquoise patina. The Axe is of usual Bronze Age form. With curved blade edge and large wing like flanges. Unusually, the axe is notched at the back, where presumably the rope would have slotted in, maintaining the axe firmly in place. In antiquity. A wooden handle would have inserted snugly under the winged flanges, and would have been held in place by a thick rope. The piece was originally cast from a two-part mold. And hammered into shape- hammer marks are still visible on the body due to the exceptional preservation of the surface. Axes such as this would have been used to clear the forests of Early Europe ... morefor human habitation. They could also be used in battle and for religious purposes. As dedications. Indeed, these axes are often found in hoards throughout central Europe, where they are believed to have served a votive function. Length: 7 1/8 inches Width: 2 3/8 inches. Condition: Exceptional condition. Unrestored. Provenance: Ex. English private collection. Originally acquired on the German market in Munich, approximately 30 years ago. Ancient European Bronze Celtic Horse - Bull toggle 50 B.C.
A fascinating ancient Celtic bronze toggle. Dating to approximately 50 B.C. A most unusual toggle. With the top end fashioned into a bull's head with curled horns, the eyes and brow incised. The lower end is modeled as a horse head, rendered in a rather reduced and abstract way, yet also capturing accurately the form of the creature. The central section of the toggle becomes the neck of the horse with the mane incised at the top. A horizontal perforation midway through. A beautiful example of imaginative Celtic art at its best. Celtic La Tene art is greatly admired for its free organic feel. Which lies in contrast to classical art that attempts to depict things in a naturalistic manner. Length: 36mm. Height of piece including mount: 62mm. Condition: Unrestored. Mounted on a beautiful bronze stand. Ancient European Bronze Age Looped Winged Flanged Axe
A beautiful European copper alloy winged. Flanged and looped axe, dating to approximately 1400 B.C. The patination on this large Axe is exquisite- a brilliant green colour. The Axe is of usual Bronze Age form. With curved blade edge and large wing like flanges. In antiquity, a wooden pole would have inserted under the winged flanges and would have been held in place by a thick rope, tied through the loop. The piece was originally cast from a two-part mold. And hammered into shape- hammer marks are still visible on the body due to the exceptional preservation of the surface. Axes such as this would have been used to clear the forests of Early Europe for human habitation. They could also be used in battle and for religious purposes. As dedications. Indeed, these axes are often found in hoards throughout central Europe, where they are believed ... moreto have served a votive function. Length: 6 inches; Condition: Exceptional condition. Publisher: Penguin Books; 2004) Edited and first published by William Caxton in 1485. The legends of King Arthur and his knights of the Round Table have inspired some of the greatest works of literature; from Cervantes's Don Quixote to Tennyson's Idylls of the King. Although many versions exist, Malory's stands as the classic rendition. Malory wrote the book while in Newgate Prison during the last three years of his life; it was published some fourteen years later, in 1485 A.D. by William Caxton. The tales, steeped in the magic of Merlin, ... morethe powerful cords of the chivalric code, and the age-old dramas of love and death, resound across the centuries. CONDITION: Light shelf wear. Last three pages are wrinkled, otherwise clean and Like New, never read. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: Volume II of“Le Morte D’Arthur” Sir Thomas Malory’s powerful and elegiac version of the Arthurian legend, recounts the adventures of Sir Tristram de Liones and the treachery of Sir Mordred, and follows Sir Lancelot’s quest for the Holy Grail, his fatally divided loyalties and his great, forbidden love for the beautiful Queen Guinevere. Culminating in an account of Arthur’s final battle against the scheming, deceitful Mordred, this is the definitive retelling of the Arthurian myth, weaving a story of adultery, treachery, and ultimately, in its tragic finale, death. Edited and published by William Caxton in 1485. Malory’s moving prose romance looks back to an idealized medieval age of chivalry, drawing on French and English verse sources to create an epic masterpiece of passion, enchantment, war and betrayal. Celtic Gaul Ancient Forgery Roman Denarius Emperor Severus Money Goddess Moneta
A Celtic Forgery from Gaul of the Silver Roman Denarius of Emperor Septimius Severus with a Reverse Theme Depicting the Roman Goddess of the Roman Mint“Moneta” 194 A.D. OBVERSE INSCRIPTION: IMP CAE L SEPT SEV PERT AVG COS II. OBVERSE DEPICTION: The head of Septimius Severus. Right, laureate crown(laurel wreath) REVERSE INSCRIPTION: MONET AVG. REVERSE DEPICTION: The Goddess Moneta. Enrobed, standing left, holding balance(weight) scales and cornucopiae. ATTRIBUTION: An ancient forgery probably struck by Celtic Gauls after the year 200 A.D. the original issue was struck in 194 A.D. The Latin is badly butchered and the depictions of Emperor Septimius Severus and of Moneta are both a bit off. But clearly recognizable. Ancient no doubt.but a forgery(forged money was common in ancient Rome is at is not too uncommon in our contemporary world) SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: ... moreDiameter: 16 x 15 1/2 millimeters. Weight: 2.09 grams. NOTE: Coin is mounted free of charge into your choice of pendant settings(shown in sterling silver pendant) And includes a sterling silver chain in your choice of 16" 18" or 20" length, details below or click) For a more authentic touch. We also have available handcrafted Greek black leather cords. We can reverse coin in mounting if you prefer opposite side showing front. DETAIL: This is a very handsome silver denarius which is an ancient forgery. Most likely struck in Gaul. It is a crude copy of a denarius which was originally struck in 194 A.D. in Emesa, Syria, a city very significant in the personal history of the Emperor Septimius Severus, who was depicted on the front of both the original coin as well as the forgery. It is in relatively good condition, a crude imitation of course, with only part legends(misspelled of course) and the depiction on the reverse of the Goddess Moneta also crude. But despite all of this, the coin is quite significant historically, one could argue even more significant than one of the original, legitimately struck specimens, and far, far more rare. Th

One of the most popular of Ancient Celtic designs, it survived well into the Christian period, probably because it could also be considered to represent the Holy Trinity.

NEW 1000-1500AD The Lady in Medieval England Rape Abduction Murder Effigies Pix
The Lady in Medieval England 1000-1500 by Peter Coss. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 214 pages. Publisher: Wrens Park Publishing; 1999) Although there have been many books written about medieval women. Few have focused specifically on the lady. In a book designed as a companion to the author's previous book. The Knight in Medieval England. Professor Coss attempts to remedy this with a work which concentrates on the role of the lady within medieval society, how she was perceived both by herself and by her male counterparts, how she related to and participated within the seemingly prevailing male culture of gentility, how the lives of lords and ladies inter-related, and how they behaved towards one another. The author begins by introducing the issues to be discussed through the example of the Pastons of the fifteenth century. The ... moreorigins of the English lady are then considered and her position. Status and image during the eleventh and twelfth centuries examined, highlighting both changes and continuities. The book then develops this theme by looking at the widening gentility in England during the succeeding centuries, especially as expressed through a variety of visual media. Employing a variety of sources. Including double monumental effigies, brasses, and surviving letters, Professor Coss opens to popular scrutiny the affective relations between lord and lady, before turning to antagonistic relationships. In addition to the perennial disputes over property, he discusses rape, abduction and murder, examining the evidence for particular cases such as that of Juliana, widow of Thomas Murdak, who was said to have killed her husband at Stourton Castle during Easter week 1316 A.D. and who was sentenced to be burned. A further chapter looks at contemporary literature in terms of gender and ideology. Here the author examines the behavior deemed fitting for a Medieval Lady. And discusses the internationalization of social and cultural values through literature. Finally he offers an interpretation of the chara

NEW Ancient Chariots Celtic Roman Greek Egypt Mesopotamia Asia Minor India China
Chariot: From Chariot to Tank. The Astounding Rise and Fall of the World's First War Machine by Arthur Cotterell. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 344 pages. Publisher: The Overlook Press; 2004) The chariot changed the face of ancient warfare. First in Mesopotamia. Then in Asia Minor and Egypt, charioteers came to dominate the battlefield. Its use as a war machine is graphically recounted in Indian epics and Chinese chronicles. Homer's"Iliad" tells of the attack on Troy by Greek heroes who rode in chariots. In 326 B.C. Alexander the Great faced charioteers in northern India, while in 55 B.C. Julius Caesar's forces were met by chariots on the beaches of Britain. Chariot" a compelling history of what is now acknowledged as the world's first war machine, traces the rise and fall of the chariot across the ... moreOld World; through Ireland, Rome, Greece, Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, and China. It examines the chariot's influence on modern mechanized warfare, and its resonance in the popular imagination, from ancient art and literature to the films of Hollywood. Rich in historical anecdote and engrossing narrative. Chariot" offers riveting descriptions of the military confrontations in which the deployment of chariots heavily influenced the outcome of battles and changed the fate of countries and empires. From 1286 B.C. at Kadesh in the Eastern Mediterranean, where the troops of Ramses II overwhelmed the Hittites with 5,000 chariots; to Rome in 67 A.D. when the Emperor Nero drove his own ten-horse chariot in the Olympic Games(he fell out but still won the prize) to Constantinople in 352 A.D. when a three-day riot, ignited by a chariot race, left more than 30,000 people dead after Emperor Justinian had to send in troops to restore order; the fascinating story of the chariot provides a key to understanding the pivotal scenes and personalities that have left their marks on history. With nearly a hundred illustrations depicting the chariot's influence in warfare. As a religious sym

Very nice decent quality 19th century antique hand faceted ruby. Hand crafted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. The faceted cut is a coarse precursor to what eventually ... morebecame known in the industry as a“brilliant cut” round, the contemporary finish generally given to round diamonds. Originally used in indigenous jewelry, this is a very pretty precious gemstone, with a highly desirable blood red color and rich texture. The color is not the heavy violet-undertoned blood red. Rather it is a bright, vivid blood red. It is eye clean, of higher value transparent character as opposed to lower value translucent or opaque rubies. Of course most ruby gemstones are anywhere from lightly to heavily included. Most completely transparent rubies you see offered today at retail are either synthetic(read the fine print carefully) or cost $10,000 a carat. While this particular specimen might not be flawless, it is at least eye clean. We guarantee you will be captivated by the flash and sparkling, fiery beauty of this natural ruby precious gemstone. The setting is of contemporary origin. It is a high quality setting manufactured by one of the USA’s leading semi-custom mount producers. It is constructed of solid sterling silver. We do have the ability to have the ring sent out for resizing if requested. Additionally, if preferred, the mounting is

Ancient Proto Celtic Iberian Bronze Figure of a Warrior - 5th Century BC
A rare Iberian seated bronze warrior. Dating to the 5th- 4th Century B.C. The nude figure sits on a thick platform. His legs together, right arm held upright and left held to the side. A quite abstract and pleasing composition, the facial features simple but powerfully executed, the thick hair swept back and the spinal groove clearly defined at the back. The attitude of this figure strongly hints that he was a warrior- his right hand likely held a spear or other weapon whilst his left may have held a shield. The Iberians were a proto-Celtic people from what is now mostly Spain and Portugal. In ancient times these peoples were regarded as fierce warriors. Often being recruited as mercenaries by the powerful civilizations to the south and east. The present figure was likely dedicated in a shrine or temple, by a donor who wished to be granted ... morea favour by the presiding God. Height(excluding mount) 2 1/8 inches. Condition: Unrestored. Beautiful patina. Provenance: Ex R.L.B. Collection. Previously in the A. Tully collection, acquired prior to 1969, Ex. Christies 28/10/94 lot 65. Tully was a well known New York Philanthropist. Her apartment by Central Park was decorated in Baroque style and contained a small number of antiquities. Tully stopped collecting in 1969 when her long term partner died. Nicely ... moreconstructed Romano-Celtic bronze ring with understated but very elegant and sophisticated features. As you can see, ring’s band has a“bezel” composed of three supporting“legs” to which originally was probably attached a metal, engraved bezel which ultimately broke off. However it is also possible that rather than attaching a bezel by brazing it onto the band, it is also possible that a gemstone might have been attached(the Romans used bitumen and pitch as adhesives) If indeed a gemstone had been fastened to the ring, it might quite likely have been an intaglio gemstone, i.e. a carnelian or amethyst(or some other quartz gemstone) with an engraved surface capable of pressing the wearer’s“seal” into wax or lead. In any event, when the ring was unearthed almost two thousand years after it was lost, all that remained were the bands and the three supports which had originally supported a bezel or stone. Inasmuch as clearly the ring once possessed some sort of bezel or gemstone. The designed seemed to invite the(re)mounting of a gemstone. So as to preserve a sense of historical continuity we mounted a large, natural, antique, handcr

Well constructed Roman-Celtic bronze ring with very bold and handsome features. The ring sports a large diamond-shaped bezel which bears two engraved lines. The significance of the two engraved lines is unknown, however Celtic artisans were famous for their abstract and surrealistic depictions. The impression one gets is of two wings, perhaps the wings on a Roman Legionary Eagle. Legionary eagles were popular depictions on both Roman coinage of the era, as well as on jewelry. Likewise popular was the winged figure of Nike, the Goddess of Victoria(also known as Victoria) However from the vantage point of the twenty-first century, regardless of what the depiction might have meant to the original artisan or the Roman owner of this ring, it’s simply not possible to be certain of the significance of the graving, except to say it seems to be abstract. The bezel itself is in the shape of an elongated diamond. In addit

England Ancient Saxon Romans Viking Norman Camelot Holy Grail Avalon King Arthur
In Search of England: Journeys into The English Past by Michael Wood. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 336 pages. Publisher: University of California Press; 1999) England is the birthplace of many immortal legends told around the world: King Arthur and Camelot. The Holy Grail, Robin Hood, the mysterious Isle of Avalon. But are these famous stories based on historical events and actual people? And what do they tell us about the character and origins of the Anglo-Saxon world, a culture that helped shape American identity? In his absorbing new book, Michael Wood examines the roots of English history. Peeling back the layers of literary and oral material that have accumulated over the ages, he offers a fascinating series of rich stories; part history, part myth; that, directly or indirectly, touch on questions of English history and identity. ... moreHe looks back at the legends surrounding Alfred the Great, King Athelstan, the lost library of Glastonbury, and more. Wood's emphasis is the Early Middle Ages. And the first two sections of the book offer deep excursions into particular moments in the history of that era. In addition to recounting some well-known legends, Wood considers the manuscripts and other primary sources of historical information on which they are based, assessing the validity of existing documentation, fleshing out historical contexts, and considering the treatment throughout history of these stories by famous writers, poets, and moviemakers. In the third part of"In Search of England" Wood writes about places that illuminate interesting aspects of early England: Tinsley Wood, near Sheffield, which has been claimed as the site of Athelstan's great victory against the Celts in 937; a farmhouse in Devon which has been occupied since Domesday and possibly long before; and the village of Peatling Magna in Leicestershire, scene of an extraordinary confrontation with King Henry III in 1265. These are the places and events that offer a complementary version of the history that is discuss

Most natural rubies have inclusions that while not individually discernable, nonetheless impart a translucent"silky" appearance to the gemstone. They are not transparent, rather they are a translucent, silky blood red tone. These rubies are much more common than crystal-clear specimens. Royal History England Middle Ages War of Roses Houses of York Lancaster Bosworth
A Royal History of England: The Wars of the Roses by Anthony Cheetham. Edited by Antonia Fraser. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 104 pages. GOLD & SILVER CELTIC CROSS, Hand crafted Brass Rubbing ready for framing
THIS IS NOT A PRINT. Each Brass Rubbing is a hand made original. This is a hand made rubbing of a Celtic Cross from Kelso. Scotland, using metallic gold and silver wax on a special black rag paper. The original cross stands on a long shaft, as did the earliest of circular Celtic crosses. The ring on the cross, which is the defining part of a Celtic cross, is thought to be a combination of Druid sun/moon worship and Christianity. The cross section is shaped in the earliest cross form of an X turned on its side. Drawings of this shape were in the earliest monastries on the British Isles. The half-circle in the arms of the cross are Stafford knots, symbolizing the Trinity. The Stafford knots are bound together by another knot that goes to the centre. Although all these lines and angles do not actually join in the centre(that would break a cardinal ... morerule of Celtic art-having an open centre point) the appearance still remains. The engraving from which this rubbing was taken is from an exhibit and workshop organized by The London Brass Rubbing Centre that has recently been on a National tour as part of their brass rubbing workshop. Rubbings like this one. Hand made by one of their craft instructors, make unusual and interesting gifts.I will send it to you rolled up in a strong postal tube. The rubbing is approximately 10" X 12" It can be hung either from wooden dowels or matted and framed under glass.
