RARE Set Of Antique Brass Bells-Middleeastern??-Cast Iron Chain
For sale is a beautiful set of antique brass bells which are linked together. These both have some etched design on the outside and the smaller one has a 2" metal sign on the outside. There is a 14" long chain on the top with a hook on the end which are both cast iron. I believe that this is from Turkey or another country in that area. It is missing the ringer on the bottom but still has a great sound as the two bells strike each other. If you have more info on this please let me know. Please email with any questions. Decorated throughout with raised ridges and incised geometric decoration of remarkable detail. The original ring-buckle, often lost, is present here. This belt. Almost certainly ceremonial(and not intended for everyday use) would originally have been found in an important Urartian burial, probably adorning the body of a wealthy warrior. Belts such as this are almost exclusive to the ancient civilization of Urartu, who were masters of metalworking.1. Urartu is a fascinating and mysterious civilization. Lost from human memory until it was rediscovered in the 1800's. Ancient Near Eastern Urartian Bronze Belt with Mythological Animals 700 BC
A large and well provenanced ancient Urartian bronze belt. Dating to the 8th- 7th Century B.C. The ornately decorated belt of sheet-like form. With peripheral perforation holes for attachment of original fabric lining, now perished. Decorated throughout with myriad mythological creatures, interspersed between an elaborate garland design with"tree of life" motif. The creatures include rams, bulls, lions and harpies. The piece shows a good example of both repousse(hammering decoration from behind) and chasing(etching decoration from the front) Urartu is a fascinating and mysterious civilization. Lost from human memory until it was rediscovered in the 1800's. The Urartian culture was located in modern day Eastern Turkey, neighbouring the ancient states of Media and Babylon, with whom they were often at war. They were accomplished ... moreartists, metalworkers and builders, with many fortresses discovered near Lake Van, Turkey. Their culture was forgotten for millennia, probably as a result of its mysterious, abrupt and complete destruction in the second half of the 7th Century BC. Urartu seems to have been absorbed into the Armenian kingdom and some scholars believe the name Armenia actually derives from the ancient Urartian region of Arme. This belt. Almost certainly ceremonial(and not intended for everyday use) would originally have been found in an important Urartian burial, probably adorning the body of a wealthy warrior. The people living in the mountains of Luristan seemed to have been fascinated by the animal kingdom. The consequence is that though you can see clear evidence that this bracelet spent millennia buried beneath the ground, nonetheless to casual examination it is quite pleasant, with the rich, warm glow of ancient bronze. To casual scrutiny it seems simply a primitive bracelet. Of course in these photo enlargements. Or to close scrutiny, these blemishes are quite distinct. The entire bracelet bears witness to the fact that it spent two thousand years buried in soil. It bears little pits, bites, and dimples on every surface. However in hand, worn on the arm, to the casual observer, it simply appears a nicely toned bronze bracelet. Though simple it is sturdy and well constructed, and entirely intact.
